It is a bit of a hike from the station, but it was worth it, especially as it is a really old pub (though the ceilings are low, so watch out if you are tall like me). Yeah, this pub is very British, and pretty awesome, but I came here because of the name (and there is a story behind it as well).

It did change names to the appallingly bland 'New Inn' at one point, but has the old name back now. They also believe the pub is haunted. The pub itself is a very nice dark woody old style looking pub with quite a low roof (I has to duck slightly). They serve a handful of good Cornish ales and have a few tables outside, where you take in the sun weather permitting. The do food but I had already eaten. In short, this was the kind of pub I was hoping to find in Cornwall.

We all really enjoyed our meals ranging from the special sea bass, to fish and chips and shrimp fajitas. (They didn't call it fajitas of course but something along the line of sizzling shrimp.) The flavors were great, portion sizes were quite generous and service was good. There was plenty of seating inside and nice toilets, one complete with a diaper changing station which is always appreciative traveling with a 3 month old. We loved the food and would definitely return to try other items on the menu. The desserts weren't amazing but the dinner made up for it. Also, the pub quiz was really well done and made the night even more memorable.

Soon after a rather large man approached us and ushered us to leave. He accused us for not using hand sanitizer and not being local and that we could infect him and others in the pub. We were the only customers in the pub. The way he spoke to us was very upsetting and degrading. We weren't even allowed to finish our drinks. We got up and walked out. He stood over us threateningly showing us to the door. I will not recommend this pub to anyone with a mad and nasty landlord like this man.

I was still hungry after that so I ordered their Easter special ice cream dessert. The only pleasant thing about the whole meal was the cute little chick that came on top of the ice cream. I adore ice cream, but it was really mediocre and came with no toppings except canned whipped cream... just plain chocolate ice cream, whipped cream, and a wafer. The range of hand-pumped real ales is far above average for St. Ives, and unlike many other establishments in the town it is not affiliated with or owned by St. Austell Brewery. As a result the beer selection offers real variety. They offer live music events on a regular basis, and it is one of those places where locals and tourists mix. Recommended.

We received no apology at all and were not offered anything else or even a partial refund. Not a word was said to us even as we left. This was our only meal out for our holiday here and we were really looking forward to it. We were mostly disappointed that we did not even receive an apology and there was no compassion at all. My best recommendation to all would be to AVOID this pub. However if you are happy with a bit of gone-off food and no compassion or understanding from the staff, this may be the pub for you!
