My husband and I arrived in York without reservations early one mid-week afternoon last month. When traveling by train, we take turns; one looks for a B&B or guest house while the other stays with our travel bags. As I waited outside the Yorkshire Museum gardens, an elderly woman who lives nearby recommended the Coach House. Since their double rooms were all booked, the management let us have their family suite on the third floor for 2 nights at a deep discount. We LOVED it and ended up staying a third night in a double room next to their private car park. Both rooms were amazingly quiet, extremely clean, and beautifully decorated, with very comfortable beds. The hotel was built in the 16th century, I believe, and has the steep, narrow, and winding stairs you might expect from a building that old. We enjoyed the historical ambiance, but someone with disabilities would want a ground-floor room. The staff were friendly, informative, and helpful. The owner/manager even took care of our week's worth of laundry for a very reasonable price. We ate breakfast in the in-house restaurant, also open to the public, and enjoyed every meal. Full English breakfasts are offered, as well as a huge variety of cereals, fruits, & juices. The hotel is located just over a high rock wall from the Yorkshire Museum so it's less than 10 minutes walk from York train station and the Minster, and convenient for shopping and museum-hopping, as well. I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else, should we be lucky enough to visit York, again. I can't stay enough good things about it! A real gem of a small hotel. read more
