We went to Clustered Spires to play last Sunday. I hadn't played there before so thought we'd give it a try. Nice folks working the clubhouse, but the course wasn't in good shape. The tee boxes were dirt and clumps of crabgrass; the traps were hard packed; the mowing hadn't be kept up (yes it had rained Thursday and Friday); and fairways had bald areas and crab grass. We never saw an employee on the course....no marshal, cart or maintenance staff. For $78, I thought it was overpriced and I could play a better course in Montgomery County for nearly half. I've heard it was a good course, but right now, I'd have to give it a "C" at best. read more

Ok for a public course. We played it recently and the fairways were not mowed. Greeens were ok. Not sure what the deal was with not mowing the fairways. Also they have areas of very high grass and weeds in between fairways which is a tick haven ( Lyme's Disease). Practice facility and range are not the best Clubhouse is basically non existent. Go for the golf, not the service. The course is good , not great and a little overpriced. Still it's a good location and the course is usually in decent shape. Some of the marshals are over zealous. The food is basic but adequate for a quick snack. Certainly there are better values in Frederick, but it's not a bad option for a weekday round. read more

It's a shame that the reviews here are so mixed because I really enjoyed this golf course. The starter was friendly, had helpful information. They do make you sign a COVID19 waiver since this is a city owned course. They do have Clean/Dirty pen cups which is helpful however I am unsure if they wipe down the carts. They do however offer a protective screen down the center of the carts for those who do not live in the same household. Like another reviewer said, this course definitely has some character including a red barn along the side of the course. We even saw a deer crossing the cart path. On a return trip, some of the other players (as stated in some other reviews) were impatient and rude of those who were older and/or not as efficient at golf. read more

Played on 5/17/20 with Jlo, jam and rye. The clubhouse installed barrier at the register, markings on floor to show 6ft distance, new/used pen separated for cc purchases, option to ride cart with plastic divider and employee at door taking customers temperature. With the new safety measures in place, i personally felt at east about coming out to golf. The course was in good condition with greens decent speed (did rain earlier), tee boxes were clean and rough was super thick. My driver did not help on the front 9, but came alive on the back..speaking of the back, i bagged my very 1st eagle on #10 with 300yd drive, 245yd 3-hybrid then sank a 17fter. Luckily i had some witnesses (haters). All in all, it was nice to get a round in and even nicer to beat the boys. read more

At best a mediocre municipal course that's supposedly owned by the city and as a resident of the city of Frederick I think it's appalling that they're charging $15 for a small bucket of balls. They are more expensive than top golf and the balls are trash. read more

Okay, first the good. The course layout is solid with a good variety of holes and several sets of tees for varying skill levels. The fairways were in great shape, as were the greens. The greens rolled very well and true. The tees were pretty beat up on a few holes, so they need to pay some more attention to them. And now the bad. The course management is terrible. We had a 9:00 tee time on a Sunday morning and we didn't tee off until 9:35. I can understand if there is some sort of weather delay, but in this case it was simple mismanagement. At first the starter said there was some problem and a few tee times were somehow double-booked. But after a little while the story changed it turns out the managers had apparently told the starter to "work in" some extra groups. That is unacceptable on a busy Sunday morning. As for the clubhouse snack bar, at the turn we went in for hot dogs and were told they were out. All they had were candy bars and crackers. The unfriendly girl at the snack bar said they were changing suppliers soon. Pace of play was 4:45 minutes - never saw a marshal on the course and saw the drink cart twice. My advice - there are so many nicer courses nearby with a little bit higher fees, but they are so much better run and overall it's just a much nicer experience. Clustered Spires is a decent course, but the management clearly couldn't care less about customer service or the overall customer experience. It's a shame really. I live less than five miles from this course and today was the third time that I've played it in the past dozen years; I was reminded again today why I usually stay away. read more

This municipal golf course lacks management that understands how to treat patrons. My 80 year old father-in-law has mobility challenges. The employees would not allow him to take advantage of the "90 degree rule" with his cart. Consequently he could barely finish 9 holes. One of the roving rangers went so far as to chide him for parking on the path with two wheels off the grass by a few inches while he regularly drove past us in his cart - IN THE GRASS! Completely unacceptable and excessive power tripping employees need to receive ADA training and basic human empathy understanding. Do not play this course!!! read more

Course provides NO WATER, we brought a cooler w/water and I had THREE BEERS in the cooler as well. I was lectured by the starter that this is absolutely NOT allowed because the course could be sued and shut down immediately. ..........now get this .........BUT had I purchased the three beers from the concession stand it would be OK ??? Really??? for three beers ?? I booked a T-time late enough for assuming just my wife and I would play. Again all about the $$$$. We were paired with another elderly couple that hardly spoke English ??? Again the 'lecturing' starter stated we would learn something from them ??? We are in our 70's. Two separate reviews: one for the golf course, and one for the instruction. GOLF: 4-stars. This is a great little course located in Frederick. The maintenance of the course is generally very good. The fairways are lush, the tee boxes (at least the tips) are solid, and the greens are fast. The bunkers are usually well cared for, even after rains. The course is not too difficult for better golfers, but for mid-cappers like me (11), it's fun. There are a couple good holes, including the 240-yard par 3 16th, and the 475-yard par 4 18th. Most of the par 5s are reachable in two (depending on weather), and the rough is thick; fair but punishing. This is a good solid course, with generally good pace of play. And the price can't be beat, especially for the condition of the course. Play on Saturday afternoon: 18 holes with cart, $40-45. Added bonus: grass tee range. I hate mats!! I have two gripes about this place. The first is that the ranger is hardly ever out, and even when he is, doesn't seem to be effective. Pace of play can be a problem, and it doesn't seem like anything is done to remedy it. For example, I was there recently, and we are stacked three groups deep on the turn. BUT, the group waiting in front of me was a twosome (one in a cart, and one walking), and playing the hole were THREE MORE TWOSOMES! Combine these groups, especially with a starter sitting on the 1st/10th tee boxes. Second, the cart girl does not come around nearly often enough. In four rounds at this place, I've never seen the cart girl twice in one round. Remedy that. INSTRUCTION: 5-stars. I can't speak for the entire staff, but if they are anything like Lewis, then they are awesome. Lewis is a younger guy, super-patient, and had a good knack of using multiple ways to explain a concept or theory that you are having difficulty understanding. This is an under-rated skill. If you say, "The problem you have is yadda yadda yadda," and I don't understand, you repeating that EXACT same thing 3 seconds later isn't going to give me the Eureka! moment you were hoping I'd have. Since taking lessons with Lewis, I'm consistently shooting 5-6 strokes better. My end-of-year goal is to shoot low 80s consistently. I'm very close thanks to Lewis. I highly recommend him to anyone. They also have a nice set-up called the Vault. It's an indoor hitting room setup with high speed cameras and a weight-shifting board that measures the pressure of your weight through the swing. Incredibly useful to see yourself on tape and really visualize the flaws in your swing. And they can burn you DVDs to take home. read more

Love this course. Well maintained. Open fairways. Smooth greens. Mostly flat. Flashes of character. Great price. They've also got a grass driving range. Which takes a little extra work and money. But real golfers appreciate it greatly. Pro-shop guy, snack guy, starter, cart girl--all great people. However, the ranger they had was awful. Young kid. Meant well. But wow, just--just bad at his job. I've never had a ranger interfere with a round like that. He followed us on-and-off throughout the round. Three times asked us to speed up pace (once on the 17th hole?). And twice hovered over us, from five feet away, during approach shots. My group was solid. Foursome, handicaps from 5 - 20. We were deliberate but efficient. Lost very few balls. And played the round right. The other crazy thing, we never really stalled the group behind us. That was a hacker group with two players topping the ball up the fairway. And when we finished 18, we looked back, and they weren't even on the tee. We made a five-minute turn. And finished in ~4hr20m. read more

Nice course...but the "pro" is a jerk! We go there as a group many times and i am recommending to no longer support a golf course where the "pro" has a terrible attitude! To many great friendly courses to chose from to deal with bad attitudes!!!! read more

Not very handicap friendly. I am in a walking boot for a foot injury. I went to watch my son play in a high school match and was told I could not rent a golf cart because it would disturb the players.....WTH. The other golf courses my son has played so far have been more than willing to rent me a cart. BTW, I have rented a cart here before because this is my sons 3rd year playing on the team. A well-manicured course with not too much trouble for the beginning golfer. You aren't going to lose many balls here. My wife, a beginner, enjoyed it. It was a bit easy for me, a 4 handicap, even from the tips, but enjoyable enough. There were three or four challenging holes that required some good shot-making. We played Sunday afternoon for $30 a piece. Pace of play was about 4 hours 20, which is good for a public course on a weekend afternoon. read more

My go-to course as a young golfer (6 handicap) on a budget. The course is in great shape for a public course and the price can't be beat if you go later for their discounted rates or even twilight. Pretty wide-open and forgiving with fairly large greens. Great course for beginners but you have to play from the tips if you want a challenge! Highly recommend it! read more

The course has a nice layout and looks good, and the price is more than fair, but the place seems to be run by lazy, non-attentive or, perhaps, ill prepared people. They charge handsomely for range balls and give a bucket of muddy, grass globbed balls. Apparently no one thought to wash them. Little things detract from what it could be and should be. read more
