We arrived for a long-term stay and our site hadn't even been cleaned -- trash around the fire pit, broken glass near the picnic table, debris everywhere. It set the tone for everything that followed. The property is dark and poorly lit at night, and complaints to management went nowhere. Safety was a constant concern. Campsites are uneven and poorly maintained, dead trees and hanging limbs are scattered throughout, and falling branches actually damaged trucks and campers during our stay. An open trench dug behind our camper sat unfinished, unfenced, and unmarked for over two months -- a serious hazard for kids, pets, or anyone walking by at night. The advertised "swim hole" turns out to be off-limits to swimmers, which sums up the gap between the marketing photos and reality. The inn, gazebo, restaurant, and bathhouse are all visibly deteriorating, and the rules seem to be made up and enforced inconsistently depending on who you are. The long-term camper community felt cliquish rather than welcoming, though a few people -- including the previous owner -- were genuinely kind. It's clear from older reviews that this was once a magical, beloved place. That's not what it is anymore. There are better, more well-maintained options in the area. Save your truck, your camper, and your peace of mind. Book somewhere else.

This is a premium golf experience in the US…read more I recently turned 69 and my two Sons and some friends took this trip the first week in October. The 12 of us stayed at the resort and played #2, #4 and the Cradle. With #2 you're required to pay an on-site caddie and then you tip afterwards. The caddie will carry two bags and they must be under 25 pounds. They are very focused on pace of play and they tell you at the beginning of your round that if you fall behind you may be asked to skip a hole. This is the quintessential Donald Ross design. It's very straight forward and everything is right in front of you for the most part. No severe dog legs, no water and virtually no out of bounds. The sand and grass are called Waste Areas and you are allowed to ground your club, take practice swings, lift clean and place. The Waste Areas are the borders of the fairway so even if you're off the fairway you still have a shot. There are a few areas where the pine trees are so thick you'll be penalized. It's very tough to get steady footing if you're in the pine straw. I was pleasantly surprised that the Par 3's are all accessible. There are a few holes where there is elevated green which robs you from seeing your ball go in the hole if you're close in to the green when you make and up and down. These greens are lightning fast and there are NO flat areas. All the greens are crowned so when you are playing for the first time, you will be challenged for strategic shot placement on the green. My highlight was a hole out on #14 from about 40 yards away but I never saw it go in so that was very disappointing. The 4 some in front of us was on the 15th tee which is just adjacent to the green so I got an ovation so I had that going for me. Our Caddie was a guy named Chris who said he was 70. He was in great shape and carried two bags with no problems. He told me at the beginning of the round 'you will only need three or four balls. He was right, I didn't lose a single ball. We got in 26,000 steps which is about 13 miles and what an experience it was.

I was in Pinehurst with 11 others for a guy's golf weekend on 10/7/23…read more Pinehurst #4 was one of the courses on our agenda. We also played #2 and The Cradle and #4 was my favorite of all. The #4 course was designed by Donald Ross in 1919. It's gone through several redesigns and restorations over the years and the current one is by Gil Hanse in 2018. It was named the best new course of 2018 and hosted the 2019 US Amateur tournament won by Andy Ogletree versus John Augustein. I can compare #2 and #4 and say that #4 is a much more visually appealing course with a large lake where several holes wrap around it and take advantage of the beautiful vistas and the natural terrain. Especially hole #13 which is a 504 yard Par 5. It is the classic risk/reward hole that gives you the opportunity to go over water making a shorter approach to the green. I also liked #14 which was a 179 yard Par 3 over the water which I birdied. There was a family sitting on the nearby hill that gave me an ovation when I landed the green and another ovation when I sank the birdie putt. Holes #15 and #16 are manageable Par 4's at 331 and 274 yards from the white tees. There were several guys in our group that were close to driving the green but on this particular day, the wind was up and swirling and right in our face. The greens were much more accessible than on #2. No more of the crowned undulating green design that are the size of a postage stamp that require precise placement to hold for a chance to putt. You also have the option of riding a cart though it is 'cart path only' on every hole. I also really liked The Nest which is the bar/restaurant at the the turn on #9. A little oasis in the sand which is Pinehurst. You have all your fav cocktails and some great food options as well as facilities for that necessary bio break. I've played 2 of the 10 Pinehurst courses and can say it's a premium experience that every serious golfer needs to try. Who knows, maybe I'll get a chance to chalk some more off the list.

Prior to that 4 stars. Clean and comfortable. 5 if the grill was open when it is supposed to be. Needed dinner on Friday after a long day at work. They were advertised to be open on Friday but they were closed. I had to run to Dollar General to get a frozen chicken sandwich for dinner. I'm still here for 5 days if you want to comp me a dinner and improve this rating.

Check in was quick and easy. The hotel is old and uses key locks instead of electric. The rooms have been renovated (bathroom still seemed a bit old school and the automatic sink was weird and too sensitive), have plenty of storage space, mini fridge, and comfortable bed. If I stay here again, I will ask to be on another floor (not 1st) because my room was near the restaurant and pretty loud as people were watching football. I texted the front desk and then closed the restaurant doors which helped some. I grabbed a cup of coffee and Pop Tart from their lobby desk before leaving. Since I left so early there wasn't anyone up there yet.

This course is NOT a SERIOUS golf course. Sure, it's in the Golf Digest Best 100, but how it got there is one of life's mysteries indeed because it has nothing good going for it. Here is a list of the Bad: 1. Pro Shop - Nothing special 2. Driving Range - Inferior to a heavily-used muni course 3. Putting Green - Beats me because it was closed. 4. Directional Signage - Pathetic 5. Greens - Just acceptable, nothing more 6. Ball washers - None 7. GPS - Very humble. The display is only a tad larger than my Galaxy S24. Here is a list of the Ugly ... and I do mean UGLY: 1. You must book on line and pay a $10 booking fee, and then they pummel you with incessant emails and texts 2. Confusing tee locations. Call me a purist, but painted farm implements are not better than standard colored tee markers. 3. Blind shots are abundant. On numerous holes you literally cannot see the green even when you are 30 yards in front of it. In one case, their use of a 12-foot-long flag stick did little to help locate the hole. 4. While there are no "sand traps," there is an overwhelming number of "waste areas," so many and so large that you are permitted to drive your cart in them. And forget hitting cleanly from them because they are 40% sand, 40% packed dirt, and 20% ROCKS. 5. Bugs! Geeze the bugs!! Buzzing gnats were in my face (and ears and eyes) for the entire round. 6. Hazardous drop-offs from fairway to waste area. Exercise serious caution getting into and out of these suckers. Falling is a definite risk. And as a final point of pain, the Ranger insulted me when I calmly told him I did not like the course by asking me if I was married, then telling me that he felt sorry for my wife. Clearly, I did not like my experience, but fortunately it will not be repeated because Hell will freeze over before I return because I feel exactly like a guy below who wrote that he would have had more fun setting two $100 bills and a $50 on fire in the parking lot.
