    Spicy spicy baby

Got the Spicy Spicy Baby today! First time trying it and I would say it definitely NEEDS spice - very sweet wrap and no spice at all, overall though i give it a 6/10 - veggies inside are very delicious. As well got a Rishi Tea with green tea and peach which is so refreshing! Give a 10/10 :)

Trying new places in the area around SPI - 1 of 2…read more One night, I was craving something like meat loaf. One of the long running restaurants on the island - Padre Rita Grill - used to have it on their menu, at least one night a week. Padre Rita Grill has closed. It was a 3 to 4 star kind of place and it would have been convenient. In hunting around for diners, I found Bayside Cafe. It's close to TX 100, beyond Port Isabel in the direction of Los Fresnos and Harlingen. They get very good reviews and they had a meat loaf special one day of the week. I got there in time to make sure they didn't run out. So, I think I've figured it out: Taco Tuesday, Filet-O-Fish Friday, and Meatloaf Monday are all alliterations so that they are easy to remember and work with. Bayside Cafe is exactly what I expected: small, quaint, and folksy. If it's comfort food you want, they have it. The meatloaf was a good sized portion and the mashed potatoes helped. I enjoyed it. The price was appropriate. The service was much like the locale - quaint and folksy. In other words, that means they were friendly. I'm going to bring this up because, while funny and predictable, it took away from the meal. Upon entering and being seated, I saw that they had Fox News on. People started to leave and the restaurant thinned out. Some of the remaining seated patrons made comments along the lines of how Fox News leans and one or two of the employees agreed with some understated but still understandable banter. It never fails. With a waitress in San Diego who looked like she had majored in saving the whales at UC Santa Cruz, she was curt to our table because I, or we, looked like "the establishment." Here, at Bayside, sporting short hair with no facial hair, and wearing clean jeans and a polo shirt, I must have been seen as tribe, so people just proceed to talk about their spin on current events in front of me ... or directly to me. Both parties would have guessed incorrectly. I look at these anchors up on the screen whose silver spoon factor is off the charts and you've got small town Americana, who they would probably snub, helping them succeed? What's up with that? I had a feeling that, as the herd was thinning out, this experience would come down the pike before I left ... and it did. Check it, please. You get up and pay at the register when you leave if using a card. I had a good meal, got the meatloaf I was looking for (and isn't as easily found as people would think), and headed back to the island. I think I understand the dynamics. Bayside Cafe isn't on the beaten path, so not on the island nor even in the shopping areas of Port Isabel. It's a little ways up from TX 100, so my guess is that they pull in more locals, which includes retirees from nice subdivisions, and fewer tourists, and "understand" their demographics through that lens.

Ok, so you have this on, but I can do without the commentary from customers ... and even an employee or two. It's not a pub.

I kept looking for this and I found it ... a meatloaf dinner prepared in a flavorful way and trimmed out with tasty sides.

Came here because the coffee looks amazing and it did not disappoint!…read more The latte and cappuccinos look visually appealing but if you're looking for a real cappuccino this might not be for you. It definitely seems like they just put a bunch of foam on top but it still tasted good. The waffle is also crispy and fluffy. The salon lox bagel is also so pretty but the large onion slices were too much. Service was great and they do get really busy.

I arrived around 10:30am on a Friday, and although the restaurant was packed, was seated immediately at the bar. Our server greeted me promptly, took my drink order, and returned with my Spanish Macchiato. It was easily the highlight of the meal--absolutely five-star worthy. Not only was it Instagram-worthy, but it tasted just as good as it looked. Creamy, rich, and infused with notes of Mexican chocolate and cinnamon, it was one of the best specialty coffees I've had in a while and the artistry was incredible. For brunch, I ordered the CLEO (a lox bagel with egg) and the SPI Breakfast Platter. The CLEO had great flavors--the smoked salmon was fresh. My biggest critique was that the soft bagel, warm egg, and lox lacked a bit of textural contrast. Even so, the individual components were delicious. The SPI Breakfast Platter was hearty, well-executed, and exactly what you'd hope for from a classic breakfast. I'd love to come back the next time I'm in South Padre and try their lunch menu, the dessert case was very enticing.

Coffee and art your vibe? Come visit Kaapeh House off Paredes Ln Rd. Kaapeh is next to Breadsmith,…read moreand a stone's throw from 7 Brew. It's very relaxing sipping on a cortado in a nearly empty coffee shop watching backed up lines circle around 7 Brew. Did you know Kaapeh House also has a drive thru? It's only a matter of time until this best kept-secret is let out of the bag. Anyway, the shop is super adorable. It reminds me of a miniature McNay and Press Coffee up in San Antonio, since it's covered in framed art pieces, and has a loft section. They have a respectable-sized menu, with your standard offerings. I brought my parents with me, and they had two white mocha lattes, and I had a mocha latte and a cortado. The cortado was good - not the best, but it was enjoyable. The mocha - I'm still sipping on it as I type this, to be honest. I'm trying to savor it. It's sweet and delicious, and has a very cozy feeling about it that I'm trying to zero in the source - I think it's the viscosity. The baristas are really cool - one had bright pink hair. She was very nice and complimented my hair, too. The guy I think was still learning? He was also very nice and he made and delivered our drinks. I swear, every time I swing by Brownsville, there's a new coffee shop to try out. I love this new trend, because they've all been pretty impressive. Kaapeh House is no exception. I'd definitely come back, especially to enjoy the art and atmosphere.
