two glasses of wine and a bowl of nuts
    Laura A.

Cozy and quiet wine bar with an excellent wine list, personal service and a niche venue in El Dorado Hills. We ventured out for an early birthday celebration and found this place around 6pm on a Saturday evening. There were two other couples inside. We were promptly seated by the hostess and served a bowl of pub mix while we perused the wine list. You can order a flight or select from several wines by the glass under whites, bubbles or reds. We chose a Rose and a Chardonnay. They also offer a more extensive wine list by the bottle or half bottle with some very nice selections and have a small food menu that include charcuterie options, caprese salad, hummus, etc. We didn't order food and were pleasantly surprised when the owner brought out a small chocolate lava Bundt cake with fresh berries to acknowledge my birthday!

I always check yelp first for reviews on gluten free items (gluten allergy). Their flatbread had a gluten free crust option (+ $2) as did their pasta have gf option (+ $2) so nice selection. I had the chicken pesto flatbread without bacon. It was OK. Nice to have a gf crust, tho wasn't the *best* gf crust I've had. Nice/ ample wine selection. Daily happy hour from 3 - 6pm which was nice. Saw advertisements for bingo nights on Thursdays, which sounds fun and can win some wine related items. Staff was very nice as well. Came to hear the music, was nice to not feel rushed out or anything/ staff was very relaxed about us enjoying the table for a couple hours at the time while we had food and wine and the music. Would give slight caution that the caesar salad has bacon on it, which I have never seen before. I ordered the gf flatbread and there was an option to add a side caesar for $5. I did not read the salad area menu to know that bacon came on it. I don't eat pork and had asked for my flatbread to not have bacon and the salad to not have crutons if they put those on; wish the wait staff had mentioned the bacon on the salad bc I had already asked to have the flatbread without and also bc it's unusual imo to have it standard on a ceasar.

Dark ambiance, mostly all servers were smiling and seemed happy to be there. We were seated by a friendly hostess and our server greeted us by informing us about alcohol first thing. He came back with water and asked about alcohol again, we ordered appetizers first. He came back and asked about alcohol again and we said we were not going to be drinking and ordered our entrees. He seemed to be the type of server that gave more attention to you if you ordered alcohol, which I why we saw with all the other tables around us. Meatballs for appetizer- 4 count with the most delicious tomato sauce and ricotta layered under it. The meatballs were so tender (pork and beef) the flavor was on point. We wiped the dish clean of the sauce. It is undeniably the best meatballs and sauce I've ever had at any restaurant. I usually don't like meatballs and the marinara sauce anywhere because the meatballs usually lack flavor and the marinara is too tart. The ricotta cheese pair very well with the marinara sauce. Whole branzino over mashed potatoes- spectacular dish. Head and tail on of it doesn't bother you. The dish is so buttery and flaky with the crispy skin. Skin was so flavorful with a hint of lemon juice over it. It was hard to find all the fish meat because it blended in with the mashed potatoes in the dark ambiance. Rigatoni alla Vodka with added Italian sausage- amazing dish. It was probably one sausage total. Ricotta on top was also a nice touch. House made focaccia bread, so soft and fluffy. I would definitely come back to try other dishes.

I'm always in search of the best of the best, and of the many cuisines I enjoy Italian certainly is at the top of my list. So when Vacanza was recommended, of course I'm going to try it! Friday night, 6:30 PM, and the place was empty. There literally were two tables with customers and that was it. The seating hostess asked us if we had reservations, and I didn't know if she was on auto pilot, or what, but it just seemed odd considering that 95% or more of the restaurant was literally empty. When she saw the look on our faces before we could respond she said oh don't worry I can find a table for you. OK then. It was a little offputting and definitely not welcoming. Once we were seated, we were offered water and everything was weird after that. We were trying to decide on our entrées, and the waitress came over to ask if we wanted to place a drink order and what appetizer did we want? We decided to go ahead and order an appetizer while we were deciding on entrées, but quite frankly in retrospect, it felt like a push for us to really order something because of how dead the restaurant was, which ultimately feels like a push for money, because once we ordered an appetizer, then the waitress said oh by the way, I can bring you some complementary focaccia bread if you would like. If it's complementary, why ask why not present that first and then allow us to take our time trying to figure out what we would like to eat?? The focaccia bread came out and it was this huge brick sized piece of bread. I don't know how many different ways to say horrible, but this definitely was inedible. It was hard, and frankly, it's almost indescribable as to what it tasted like. They presented a small plate with olive oil and balsamic which quite frankly, if we had decided to eat the bread, it absolutely would not have been enough. Yes I realize we can ask for more. At least I believe we could have. The appetizer that we ordered were the stuffed squash blossoms. These are my absolute favorite, and I had asked the waitress if they were in season because they're usually in season for a really short period of time, and she's made the comment that they're always on the menu. Which I sort of brushed off and I should not have. When someone from the kitchen brought the plate to the table, the comment was made about "make sure you enjoy some of the sauce at the bottom of the plate "first off, whatever that white sauce was supposed to be there wasn't very much and definitely not enough for the small expensive serving. The squash blossoms just like the focaccia, or absolutely horrible. Traditionally, stuffed squash blossoms are usually filled with ricotta cheese that has been seasoned, the squash blossom is filled, and they are quickly lightly fried. They are usually incredibly delicious. These were incredibly horrible. Yes I'm saying it again, because I don't know what in the hell was used, but it tasted like oyster sauce and there was nothing creamy or cheesy about any of it. When we were trying to decide what to do because we haven't ordered our entrées yet, and the waitress literally had been over three or four times in between all of this to ask us for our order, the taste in the smell of the food literally was making me ill. I took one for the team, and I said that we needed to leave and that we needed to pay the bill. (30.00 appetizer) The funny thing is, she didn't seem shocked by this How this place stays in business, I don't know.

Thus cheered, we were seated quickly, even though we arrived without a reservation. Water, bread and menus came quickly. Perusing them to the background mix of contemporary mellow pop (think James Taylor and Van Morrison) and old standards, we decided on the petite prime rib for the carnivore (me) and sea scallops served over risotto for my wife. We each chose flights of wine to accompany our entrees. Despite including three wines per flight, the pours were fairly generous. Our dishes were perfectly prepared and came out more quickly than we expected, considering that the place was almost full. Our server checked back just enough and took care of any special requests promptly, even offering to exchange one of the wines (out of six!) that we didn't like for something better suited to our taste. The pace was leisurely which was fine given the good food and wine accompanied by the relaxed vibe of the live music. And the prices were quite reasonable given the quality of both the food and service. A dark-ish old school atmosphere added to its charm for us Baby Boomers, but even younger diners seemed to be enjoying themselves. As for us, we highly recommend it!

The bread crust had garlic baked onto it, and the dipping sauce was huge and flavorful. The Southwestern salad exceeded my expectations. It was huge! The chicken was grilled and blackened and cooked to perfection and served on a bed of fresh lettuce with black beans, chopped onions, and blue cheese with a spicy dressing that was fantastic. The dish was so good that I'm tempted to go back tomorrow night. If you're looking for a casual dining spot with a friendly local vibe and amazing food, Manderes fits the bill! When we first walked in, we were impressed. Cute little conversation nooks with comfy furniture in little corners, a decent wine and beer list, and some appetizers. The menu says all beers are $5 on Thursday all day. We figured it was perfect for what we needed. We settled into a corner that was near the salon, as there was no other seating inside. Did I mention the comfortable furniture? Well, it's a good thing it was comfortable. We sat for nearly an hour, waiting to have our order taken. The first two of us to arrive we're given some water to drink, but myself, and the other straggler were never offered water. During this time we got to experience the...ahem... aroma of the salon next-door. Peroxide and other hair products don't usually lead to an appetite. We decided to wait it out. And wait we did. After nearly an hour, the one employee who appeared to be working today, came to take our order. My friend ordered a glass of wine and she told him that they were out of that one, so he chose another option. I then ordered a beer, and she started to leave the table. Somehow she hadn't seen that there were 4 of us? Friend who had been ignored quickly said , 'and I'LL HAVE ..." to get the server's attention, and then ordered a glass of wine, while our final friend ordered a beer. There was a buffalo cauliflower appetizer on the menu, and we ordered it for the table. The server arrived after a few minutes with one glass of wine, which she sat in front of me, and a beer which she placed in front of my friend. We assumed that she had just mixed up the two of us, so we traded, and I took a sip of my beer. She then came back with another glass of wine. She started to leave and told us to let her know if there was anything else we needed, so we reminded her that we had another beer and an appetizer coming. This is when she told me that the beer that I had ordered was one that they were out of. I held up the one in my hand and said oh, is this not mine? Since we had already waited an hour, my friend just took the beer that I had sipped from, and I waited while she went to get me my new order. When we were nearly done with our drinks, our appetizer finally arrived. It was all we could do to keep from laughing out loud. That was the smallest possible plate with the smallest possible amount of cauliflower on it. A handful, but not an adult handful. Well, maybe Bernadette from Big Bang Theory, but not an average sized adult hand. For four people. You would think she would have told us that it was small and we might want more than one for the table. Honestly, I would've wanted more than one for just myself. To their credit, the cauliflower did taste good. Good thing the salon smells had ruined our appetite. We waited again and finally got our check. They had charged us for one glass of wine, the overpriced $12 handful of cauliflower, and two beers. However, the advertised five dollar happy hour price for the beer was not reflected on the check. She had charged us seven dollars each for the beers. We called this to her attention when we went to the counter to pay, as well as the fact that she had not charged us for one of our glasses of wine. She said "oh yeah. I did that to make up for the beer. We're not doing that anymore. We don't have happy hour on Thursday anymore." It seemed to have escaped her that you can't list something on the menu at a certain price and then charge a different price. Overall, they get one star for comfy couches. We won't be back.
