Passive staff, unwelcoming, and confusing transactions. I've been here a few times to get a feel for resale shops locally and this staff tries unsuccessfully to create a welcoming store. I've bought from them and sold to them; I didn't get many issues when buying aside from the general passive attitude that I can't help but wonder if stems from pretentious opinions of certain people who shop there, but the selling process was confusing and not worth it. They need better guidelines for their buy back procedures, because even after shopping there and thinking I knew what to bring in like popular brands, current styles, and no-wear clothing, I got $6 out of my trip and a judgmental return. Here's the good news--I've found some really good shoes and clothes here in great condition at pretty good prices. Here's the bad news--Clothes Mentor has changed its buying policies and if you're trying to sell stuff to them, you'll get a tiny sliver of what your stuff is worth. Here's an example--several years ago, I sold several pairs of Dansko shoes and they offered me 50% of their selling price of $30 each which totaled $45 for 3 pairs of shoes. Now, these shoes cost me $100 to $125 each pair, so I get that they can't really offer me what they're really worth. I could either take this $45 or sell them on eBay. Okay, a year or so ago, I went in with another pair of Dansko shoes that cost me about $120. They now offered me 40% of what they could sell them for--which they said was $24.00. That means that I received less than $10 for a pair of shoes that cost me $120... and these shoes were in VERY good condition. I can't remember if I went and sold them, but wow. The difference between 50% and 40% is noticeable. Fast forward to today. I went in with 5 pairs of shoes--4 pairs of nearly new Dansko shoes (retail from $90 to $145) and one pair of New Balance 847's (retail $129) that had NEVER been worn. Totally clean throughout and the bottoms were sparkling new. They offered me $27.00 in "trade" or $21 cash for 4 pairs of the shoes and didn't want one pair. $21 cash for 5 pairs of shoes in excellent condition. This means they were going to sell some of my shoes for $16 a pair and some for $22 a pair. I took them back with me and just listed them all on eBay. We'll see what happens. UPDATE: I made over $154.78 on these 5 pairs of shoes by posting them on eBay. Sure, I had to mail them to customers at a cost of approximately $8 a pair, but that still means I made $110. It's so, so much more money than I would have gotten from Clothes Mentor that it's worth it. In short, I will continue to look at their clothes and shoes--and possibly buy them, but won't sell anything to them at all. I'll do better on eBay or even Craiglist. ----------------------- The only other thing that has changed about this store is that the turnover of staff has really shifted. The same people used to work there for years and in the last 2 years, I have never seen the same face there when I've visited. This kind of bothers me as I wonder if the person who is accepting (or not accepting) goods is really an expert. They did tell me that they simply tell the register what kind of item you're selling and "the computer" puts a price on it... so they have no control over the price you'll get for your high end goods. I get that times are hard and retail businesses are cutting back, but I'm wondering if the corporate offices that set up these franchises are aware that giving a customer 30% of what their goods are worth will result in FAR LESS clothes and shoes on the floor. I've never heard of this place and my mom and I went in curious to see what this store was about. WOW! This place has such a vintage feel-- I'm only 22 but I absolutely loved the unique selection of clothing and different items. There were so many great outfits put together on the mannequins; my mom got a very nice black sequin dress for only 14 dollars! I found a vintage black fluffy coat for cheap as well and the quality was very high. I wish I'd had more time because i probably would have found more but I believe this place is a huge step up from Plato's closet. There were lots of great brands like Steve Madden and Calvin Klein and the employees were very helpful and friendly! And the best part was that it's cheaper than buying full price. I've never tried selling here specifically but I believe that if you're prepared to sell your clothing to ANY consignment store, don't be mad if they don't take anything or offer much for your items. In order for things to be cheap to buy, they have to sell them less to make a profit and they even have a percentage system for calculating prices. Giving a 1 star review just because they didn't want your style is petty in my opinion and ruins the actual quality that a business has. And trust me, I've sold hundreds of times to consignment stores always expecting them to give me more, and it can be disappointing when they tell you they only want 1 item, or even pass completely on your clothes, but I will never give a 1 star review for that. read more

I took in several items to sell that were all on the website's list of accepted name brands. However, the clerk told me they would only accept 3 of the items because they are only looking for clothing from 2013 on. I know at least 3 more items not accepted by them were within this time range, but I wasn't going to argue with the clerk. If this is the store policy, that should be clearly stated on the website. I would not have bothered wasting my time had I known this was the policy (I'm not even sure that it is their policy). It's a ridiculous policy anyway as designer brands are mostly timeless and classic. No need to worry about outdated styles with certain brand names, in my opinion. I browsed the store while I was waiting for the estimate of what I'd receive for my items. I was not impressed with what they had to offer. The clothes seemed to be in good shape; however, there wasn't much selection in all sizes. Not all that much variety, either. I will not return as either a buyer or a seller. read more

Clothes mentor is an older and by older I mean not teen or college age people, women's version of Plato's closet the staff is slightly more polite slightly is the key word here my first couple of experiences were pleasant and thought the price offers on my items were not as high as I thought they should be but still somewhat reasonable however the last time I went in to to sell will be my last I brought a pair of rare hot pink and orange bowed ugg moccasins that had never been worn as well as two never worn tags still on Michael Kors tops they were both over $50 a piece and several pairs of silver ,seven , and Michael Kors jeans some never worn with tags and others worn a handful of times but still in excellent condition and a variety of Calvin Klein ruff hewn Ralph Lauren and lucky brand tops. The cashier accepts all of my items and offers me a mere $20 dollars for hundreds of dollars worth of designer clothing I was shocked to say the least and highly annoyed at the hour wasted for such a ridiculous offer also to mention every piece of clothing I brought in was no less than 1 year old but as I'm shopping around I see purses and shoes that are 5 year old styles and alot of the clothing more than 3 years old Plato's closet and clothes mentor should be boycotted so they will go out of business and stop ripping us consignors with good items off they give you only %15 of what they sell it for I know this from former managers or both Plato's and clothes mentor let's but an end to them ripping us off. Wish I could give a 0. I walked in with two large bags of clothing today, all neatly folded, very clean, stylish and many new items. Items that were accepted brands according to the sales girl when I called beforehand to check. Well, to my utter shock, they couldn't find a. single. item. While I waited on them to go through my stuff, I browsed the store. I quickly realized that many of their items were overpriced for SECOND HAND, but it didn't bother me, because a lot of them were exactly like what I had brought in, so I was thinking for sure that they would keep many of my things. Well, like I said... couldn't find ONE. SINGLE. THING. Talk about picky. Or maybe judgmental is a better term. Cause from the moment I walked in, I felt like I was being sized up. I guess the girl who runs it thinks she has ultimate style sense and if you don't look like a perfect model when you walk in to drop off clothes, you are written off. Bottom line... don't bother. There are lots of other consignment shops with better clothes to buy and friendlier staff to make it an enjoyable experience. read more
