Great guys, an even better cut. Highly recommend for a great clean look. Since moving to online booking, so much easier

You can now schedule your haircut online (instead of putting your fate in the hands of the chaos of the universe). I've been passed around to basically all of the barbers here (due to my own failure to plan adequately ahead of time). All of my cuts have been great, if not exceptional. You must bring ca$h. read more

I asked for a little off the top and they took me balled this made me very sad and I got made fun of at school

Just moved into town and I bought something from facebook marketplace and saw the guy had a nice cut so I asked him where he got it from and he said Clifton Barbers. I checked it out and Dave gave me a fresh cut! Legit haven't heard my wife compliment my cuts in a minute. They're CASH ONLY and have their own vibe out there. Super nice people and someone always greats you there and checks who you're with. I don't think they take walk-ins because they turned a guy down while I was there but who knows maybe during down times they do. Pretty straight forward joint with real nice cuts. They have an IG too so that's how I ended up deciding on my barber. They'll tag their barbers so you can see who's cuts fit you better. Context: white guy with straight thin hair. Also some of the reviews on here are hella old so take that into consideration. read more

I went here because my normal barber was on vacation. Needless to say I should have just waited. I had heard from a few friends that this was place was a great one to go to around campus. I arrived on Saturday morning right at opening and waited for an hour and a half. Right when it was my turn, a guy who came in maybe 15 minutes and 2 people after me got up at the same time as me. The barber tells me its the other guys turn and proceeds to talk to him like they are best friends. I didn't mind the wait as much as they let one of their "regulars" go before me. Once it was my turn to go the barber gave me one of the worst fades I had ever seen and the kicker is I didn't even ask for one. Don't go here! These guys are not good at their jobs. read more

I came in at what apparently was the afternoon shift change, around 2:00. Four barbers cutting, four people in front of me. I figure ok, with this many guys cutting it should be relatively quick. Three of the barbers finish their cuts and they all disperse. Going into the back room and are finished for the day it appears. Ok that's fine. The next shift comes in the shop, all at different times. Meanwhile everyone is just sitting there, no greetings, no "hey thanks for waiting guys we'll be with you in a second," nothing. They just headed to back room and started shooting the breeze with the first shift guys. One by one they slowly, and I mean slowly, come out. All of us still waiting. They take their time setting up their station, heck one guy even took ten minutes to do his own hair in the mirror. Finally my turn. It was a pretty good cut even though it took quite a long time. It wasn't exactly what I wanted but I just wanted to get out of there given the long wait, which seemed unnecessary, so I paid and left. And maybe that's on me for not articulating properly what I wanted, either way 30+ minutes for a haircut is pretty long. An hour and 45+ total is absurd. Listen, I get it, Clifton Barbers is going for the old school barber shop where it's a little rough and the guys will call you up when they are ready to cut hair but that only can go so far before you start to sacrifice customer satisfaction. There was absolutely no sense of urgency with the barbers to get going and cut their customers' hair. Which by the time the second shift guys were ready, there were seven of us waiting. They do offer good haircuts, but as for the whole vibe of the place, it's a little off-putting. The guys all seem like they don't want to be there and are a little arrogant. If you're willing to wait then by all means stop by, otherwise I would try to come in during off hours or try somewhere else. read more

Very disappointed in this place, which basically only gives the same 1930s post-Weimar Republic (hint hint) German boy haircut to all of their customers. My boyfriend told the barber "I want a trim, not too short on the sides," and the barber asked him if he wanted it blocked in the back. English is my boyfriend's second language, so he didn't know what the barber meant, so he told him "I don't understand what you mean" but the guy ignored him and went to work anyway. Not one minute goes by and he basically buzzes the sides down to almost nothing, with something long on the top. This was obviously very upsetting, and not at all what we wanted. I walked up to the barber and said "please stop cutting, this is way too short," and got zero response from the man cutting my boyfriend's hair, not even a look in the eye. The NEIGHBORING barber, who I guess was the manager, said to me "your boyfriend didn't state clearly enough what he wanted. 'Not too short on the sides' isn't enough direction." This is all kinds of stupid for a couple of reasons: 1. I was speaking to my boyfriend's barber, not the manager or whoever this other guy was. 2. Why didn't the barber ask any additional questions? Clearly my boyfriend had issues understanding what was going on, but the barber was completely unhelpful in explaining anything to him. Cutting hair is his job, he can't explain how he does it? Why NOT ask a customer more questions for the sake of better service? 3. Who tries to blame the customer like this, especially when they're this unhappy? I told the manager that his staff should learn to ask more questions and sat back down while the barber cleaned up the mess. The rest of the time, the manager kept going over to the barber saying "it doesn't look bad, don't worry, you're doing a good job." No apology to my boyfriend, nothing. He was literally more concerned about making his coworker/employee feel good for a bad job than making things right by the customer. TL;DR--This place can't seem to do anything different other than one haircut but won't say so. Can't own up to their mistakes or be bothered to apologize when the customer is dissatisfied. read more

Amazingly good if you're patient enough! I went in on a rainy Saturday and there were 4 barbers busy with customers and 4-5 people ahead of me in the wait. Not gonna lie, but I watched every other haircut as they happened. When my turn came it was already good one hour and my haircut itself took 40 minutes and in the end, I really enjoyed my look. The wait was worth! My barber was sweet, patient and asked what I wanted and carefully listened when I said what I was expecting. After good two min rundown he told me what he was gonna do and I was keeping my fingers crossed as you can't see your haircut as it happens, you'd be faced to see the wall/bench with others. Yes, they are a bit pricy and take only cash. They are not any supercut who shave half of your head with trimmers. If you want it good, give it time and patience. The barbers are putting their heart and time into making you feel amazing. My barber got a cut as he was doing all scirror cut, but that dint stop him. The four guys are chatty and crack jokes and super friendly as they greet everyone that comes in with 'what's up bro! '. I was the only Indian among the crowd and their treatment and genuine interest in my needs is what I expect anyone who I'm paying to get my hair done. Long story short - yes there is wait - one to two hours from getting in to getting out. Yes, they take only cash. If you want your haircut look good and not like a trimmer disaster like what other commercial places do, this is your goto place! read more

Dan the barber used to work in a frou-frou salon but now refuses to work with chemicals. So while he won't do more than spray hair with water before cutting it, I've been able to get a salon-caliber haircut at this place. The lack of styling means I instantly know whether I got a decent wash-and-wear haircut -- which is almost always the case. Oh, and he's good with split ends too. The man respects natural, un-messed-with hair. He knows how to cut difficult thick hair and gives good advice on how to maintain it. His haircuts tend to have a very good shape. A note on hours: Dan works with his wife but only he cuts women's hair, and he may still be out on Tuesdays teaching a class. So men's hair can be cut Tues-Sat, women's possibly only Wed-Sat. read more

Great place to get a quality cut if you want something clean like a fade or taper. Price was 25 dollars. Music playing in there was pretty dope and the guys cutting hair all were very talented. I went at 1 pm on a weekday and it wasn't too busy I waited maybe 10 minutes. Called ahead as well and asked if there was a long wait. I will say that this place would be a bit better if they had a bundle option in pricing for doing haircut and beard. I would have done my beard here but it was a little pricy. read more

No service. Felt like branching out for a new barber and wanted to check this place out despite the poor reviews and slightly above average prices to give it a chance since it is close to my work. I sat patiently for almost an hr to get a haircut just to watch 3 of the barbers pack it up in front of me and go into the back room never to come out again. I was the only person left waiting. Had to leave since no hope was in sight of actually getting a haircut. I was hoping to give his place some praise but just can't since no one seemed to want to cut hair today. Cuts looked fresh though, wouldn't mind having one. read more

Best haircuts in town - but be prepared to wait. Its walk-ins only. BONUS! 1st place I didn't have to pay full price since I'm mostly bald anyway. No shortage of humorous banter from the barbers either. read more

Talk about a long wait! There are some pretty cool guys working at Clifton but I am not sure if it is worth the 2 hour wait or not. Clifton can give a good haircut but most likely you won't have the same barber each visit so you might not get the haircut you expect. Also a $25 haircut before tip is a little pricey for me, but if you are willing to pay and wait, it is not a bad place to go! read more

I like this place, it has a cozy and welcoming environment. I've went a couple times and got my hair done well, by 2 of the guys there. But today was different. I was growing my hair out, and I had two pictures in great detail of how I wanted the sides of my head to be cut. The picture described the back of the head would increase from the base of the neck going 5cm-7cm-11cm-15cm to the top of my head. Then on the sides from the base 6cm-11cm-15cm to the top. I showed him these and he agreed, showed me the end result and it looked nothing like around what I wanted. I told him that and he recommended what I get was my hair off the ear and lined up. I told the guy that I trusted him but I want it like the picture. I don't pay attention for a second, and clippers that were there seemed to be set at level 1, it was basically next to shaving the hair, goes up the side of my head. I instantly regreted going to this place, but it taught me not to get attached to things. The man was nice, he seemed genuine to me at least. I know it wasn't on purpose or anything but I won't be going back to this place. If you are going here, and want something that isn't an undercut, don't sit on the seat on the far left closest to the window. read more

My son has has never looked better than when he started getting his hair cut by Dave at Clifton Barbers! Best guys in town.

If you're a person of color, i.e: bi-racial, African American, or belong to any other ethnicity that is associated with having thick, more coarse or curly hair, STAY AWAY FROM THIS BARBER SHOP! I had visited Clifton barbers Ludlow after being referred by a friend. He explained to me that a barber by the name of Dave was hands down the best at bald fades, something I have been interested in getting for quite sometime. So I went and saw Dave and was blown away with the craftsmanship and skill that this barber possessed. I left the shop feeling extremely confident in the job that was done and honestly loved the cut. But upon my second visit. I was greeted by three white men, something I managed to look over during my first experience with Clifton Barbers. I waited for over 15 minutes before I was finally greeted by one of the barbers asking me what I was wanting to get done. And when I explained about how I had gotten a bald fade my last and first time and, when I was then told that the only person that would be able to take Care of me would be Dave, and that he wouldn't be in until over a hour and ten minutes from that point in time. So I then explained I was on a time crunch and that it didn't have to necessarily be a bald fade, that a regular fade would work as well. To which all three barbers replied to me that they would be in unable to cut my grade of hair, and that Dave was the only one who cut people with hair like mine i,e: black, bi-racial, curly, kinky, coils, AFRICAN AMERICAN style textured hair. So. If you fall into any of theses categories, i suggest you AVOID THIS BARBER SHOP. And Dave, i suggest you move to some place where your talents would be more appreciated. read more

Never had any problems here. Yes the waits can be long but you know you're getting a quality cut. First time I went they noticed my part was on the wrong side. We switched sides and my hair has been easy to style since. This is cash only and they recently increased prices. Come with about $30 to cover tip and cut. My favorite part is they don't give themselves time restraints to get your hair done. Go to most these places like sports clips and they are timed. This results in mistakes. They don't do that here. So will you wait...yes...but the. They will take their time with you. read more

Have tried 3 times this week to stop in for a cut. Extraordinarily long waits each time. You're not running enough chairs, boys. Coupled with cash-only policy AND raised your haircut price another $5? Oof. C'mon. read more

At first I thought the wait was long, but then I noticed all three of the barbers were deeply focused on their work. These guys are artists and masters of their craft. The wait is worth it, my hair looks great. I will gladly be returning for my next haircut. read more

Incompetent Hipster Bullshit: I don't know if it was just the guy who cut my hair--who seemed to be new--but this is one of the worst cuts I've received in my life. I specified that I wanted a pretty simple fade and no length taken off the top. The first thing the guy did was whip out his clippers and buzz almost to the top of my head on the left side (so now I look lop-sided) and on the right side, he shaved a big chunk out of what had taken me several months to grow out. So the end result is that one side of my hair is literally 2 inches longer than the other (which ranges from less than half an inch toward the crown to an inch and some change in the front), and I can't do anything with it until some of this mess grows out. Here's a suggestion to whoever owns/manages: tell the new kid to save the shenanigans, focus on his craft, stop distracting the other barbers, and learn how to cut damn hair. I'd love to give one of the other guys (who I've heard raves about) a chance but it'll be six months before I have enough hair to cut again thanks to my one trip to Clifton Barber. Furthermore, the whole staff seemed more interested in being bros than, I don't know something crazy like interacting with their customers who endure multi-hour waits while they talk about their cars or motorcyles or going out after work or take smoke breaks. Employee camaraderie is a great thing, but the incompetent hipster who cut my hair didn't even ask me my name or how my day was going. How about a modicum of customer service fellas? I heard great things about this place, but sadly I have to disagree. My advice: wait for one of the more experienced guys. I'm prepared to go back to a salon, pay more, not have to wait two hours...hell a Great Clips would have been better than what I left with. I'm literally wearing a hat every day now because there's no way to fix it except to buzz it all off. read more

New owners. This place has made a big comeback. All the guys cutting hair do great work. My new barber shop of choice.

I was a customer of Clifton Barbers for 2 years. I live on Ludlow, liked the owner and patronize local merchants. I have sat on the hard wooden benches for more than 2 hours to pay $25. plus tip for a haircut. That is bad enough, but it is up to the customer to know when it is his turn. So you have to keep track of which 10 or so guys are already there before you came in and who comes in after you. On my final visit, some guy cut ahead of me and the guy before me. I was furious, but chose not to make an issue of it. When I finally got in a barber chair, I said to the barber, "you guys need a better system for keeping track of who is next". I was informed I "need to speak up". F Clifton Barbers. Now I get a good haircut at a salon. I pay $20., get an appointment and don't sit on a wooden bench for 2 or more hours. read more

Went here a few weeks ago, I was looking for a barber shop to get my 1 year old nephew a cleaned up. I live in the neighborhood and wanted to try Clifton Barbers. When we walked in, we were not warmly greeted, we were viewed skeptically and as intruders (I was with my sister-in-law and mother-in-law; we were all women). He sternly says, No we don't give haircuts to 1 year olds; 5 years is the minimum age. Ok. Fine. I understand the policy, however the customer service was very poor. His tone was arrogant and annoyed. Try using "Miss" or "Ma'am." Learn how to turn people away gracefully. I definitely won't be bringing my son here in the future. read more

I love this Barber shop! I'm a hair stylists and I always send my men clients here who need a walk in shop. Every barber here is beyond talented and very friendly. It's a great environment and although their may be a wait, it's always worth it. The prices are very fair for the product that is received and I have never seen a bad cut walk out of here, I cannot speak highly enough of the professionalism and talent from Clifton Barbers! read more

Been going to Dan for the last couple of years. I've gotten a great cut every time, even when requesting unconventional styles. Dan adapts hair styles to your face/head. He is extremely talkative, but never takes too long and I've never had to wait more than five minutes when I walk in. Wholeheartedly recommend Clifton Barbers. read more

I've never had a better experience at another barber shop. The wait is long at times but always worth it. At a full service barber shop, things are usually more extensive than just a trim. If you want a rushed and imperfect haircut, go to sports clips. If you want a real haircut from real barbers who care about their career, Clifton Barbers is the place for you. read more

If 1930s hairstyles and vintage barber shops are what you're looking for then this may be the place for you! If you're like me, however, there's something disturbing and hilarious about seeing yourself in the mirror once your haircut is complete only to see that you look like a less put-together Alec Baldwin from 30 Rock. Don't worry though, I made it home without anyone seeing me, took a pair of scissors, and voila! crisis averted. An hour wait, smelling like aftershave for 8 hours, and hearing the word "dude" 30 times is NOT worth saving $10. Do yourself a favor and make the appointment to go elsewhere. read more

A true barbershop where a man can speak his mind. Dan is a bit grumpy most of the time but don't be afraid to interrupt his chatter. If you really want to know what is going on in Clifton's Ludlow business district, Dan is the man to talk to; he has his fingers on the pulse of Ludlow at all times! I've been seeing him for six years now and he always seems to know what to do with my hair without me saying much. He does beards too. read more

Dan and Susan, the husband/wife duo that run this shop really seal the deal on my favorable review. They compliment each other with their personalities as well as hair cutting abilities and techniques. They are humble and personable along with extremely welcoming into their shop. I have coarse and difficult hair, but at Clifton Barbers I really feel like I get a personalized cut. Dan is big on "blocking out a person's face and giving a cut that matches the shape of their head" so, as another reviewer said, cuts from here always have a great shape. They fit more naturally. And if you're willing to give them some freedom in what they'll do, your haircut will definitely match you. Finally, the pricing is nice. For $16.50 I always get a great looking haircut, straight razor line up, and am vacuumed clean for the rest of my day. read more

I love the cuts I get from this place... when I can actually get in a chair. I've been forced to walk out because of the amount of people waiting vs. the amount of barbers cutting. The times I have decided to wait people abuse the "honor system" of deciding who was next. I'm getting married today and I really wanted a fresh cut so I stopped in yesterday evening and the bench was full with only 2 people cutting so I waited but after being there for nearly half an hour and the same people were still in the chairs I realized that closing time would come easy before my turn ever comes around so I headed back home. I stopped back in today and watched the barbers go from 2, to 4, to 2, then to 3 people cutting. There's no rhyme or reason to how many barbers are there at any given time. After waiting about an hour, a guy walks in and hops right up when asked "who's next" despite pretty much everybody in there saying otherwise. Once they started his haircut anyway I had to walk out for the final time. I guess I'm off to find a place that has appointments read more

I didn't want to give them this rating, but let me explain why Clifton Barbers has gone completely downhill in the past year. As a UC student, and "Cliftonite" for years, I've always supported local business, and good ones at that. The team of two at Clifton Barbers has always been good to me (in terms of hospitality), and haircuts were always very good. As of late, they have been closed every single day. I have not had my hair cut for over a month and a half and was waiting; everyday is a new excuse. "We have no AC", "Be back Wednesday", and so on. If you're willing to wait it out, they're very good, and the price is nice for the cut you get. Unfortunately, not all customers can fit to their I-guess-we'll-be-open-for-2-hours-today schedule. read more

I started going back here after the new owners came in. Updated decor and styles of cut. All the barbers are nice and proficient. Haven't had a bad cut yet. There are times when it gets very busy but most of the time the wait isn't so bad. Especially when they have 4 barbers going. read more

If you're looking for a modern fade, these guys know what they're doing. Everytime I've come, I have been really pleased with my cut. Unfortunately, it's pretty rare that I can get a haircut from here. The wait is always more than an hour b/c they don't take appointments and by the time they finish cutting your hair it could be two and a half hours after you get there. In fact the last 4 times I came in, there were at least 15 to 20 guys waiting for haircuts from 3 barbers. For anyone who has kids or is on a time crunch because of work it's just not going to pan out so I've stopped coming and so have pretty much all my friends from the area. It's also inconvenient that they only take cash and that you have to walk to another business nearby if you forgot to stop off at the bank because they don't have an ATM of their own. I get the whole retro idea of your classic neighborhood barbershop meet up where you can shoot the shit and everyone knows each other. Reality is that this isn't a small town with the neighborhood barbershop. It's a city where people don't have 2.5 hours to wait for a haircut they can get elsewhere. I think the whole concept they are going for is more for the barbers and owner than the customers. It's unfortunate because they are talented but if someone asked when a good time would be to come when you don't have to wait, I'd say there isn't. read more
