Came here for a quick cut as my normal person was out on leave. I walked in on a weekday morning and plopped right into a seat. The guys doing cuts were all lively and fun and a good time to be around. They did a reasonably nice job on my cut. Not exactly how I was hoping, but as good as I could hope for walking in and getting my first cut. I also asked for a quick beard trim which they obliged. These guys are fantastic! On a cross country round trip personal appearance tour and after 22 days on the road I stopped in fir a tune up on my L.A. Fade! Roger did not disappoint! Friendly guys. Came in with my husband and son for my husband's usual haircut. They do men's cuts for $18 and children for $16. There's plenty of charm in the shop if you're sitting and waiting. Good amount of Pleasant Ridge history too if you're inclined to strike up a conversation with the 4 barbers. Parking is to the side of the of the shop and there is also an outdoor bench if you want to wait outside or just enjoy the sunshine. It has been about 7 months since I had a haircut or shaved. I put on a baseball cap the other day and when I saw myself in a mirror I thought Forrest Gump was staring back at me. I am 73, so I am a bit cautious about doing anything that would put me into a position to catch COVID-19. I called GIL'S to see if there were procedures in place that I would feel comfortable with. Definitely recommend this shop. I've been here twice now, and both times I got a great haircut. I am definitely a "barber-shop guy," in comparison to the strip mall meat-market salons that are the trend these days. Both times that I've gone I was able to get in immediately, but to be fair I did go on my day off during the week in the early afternoon. I'm told that they are quite crowded on the weekends. They have four barbers and it seems to be all walk-in traffic. I think if you had a preference, you could probably hold off on your place in line and wait. I've had haircuts from both David and Rodger, and both were very friendly and talkative. David even remembered me from the last time I visited after only having gone there once before. Parking is a little limited and awkward when lots of people are down there. I drive about 45 minutes each way to go there, but it's worth it. read more

However the second time we went we received no communication a barber who smelled unpleasant and a haircut that turned out to be not what we wanted at all. Gil's is an old-school barbershop that offers classic cuts and won't break the bank (standard cut is $18). The location is clean and well-decorated, the barbers were friendly and engaging, and even though they don't take appointments, I've never waited more than 5 minutes. Minus a star for being cash-only, but add that sucker right back in for the eyebrow trim and hot shaving cream/straight razor neckline cleanup! Gil's has earned a loyal customer in me. I literally received the worst haircut of my life here. I asked for a 4 on the side and an inch off the top. My hair was over an inch longer on top than it was on the sides, yet the guy cutting my hair moved my line up on top of my head and shaved part of it. The atmosphere is perfect including the mounted barracuda over the front door. It's like walking into a time machine and landing in the 1950s or early 60s. Solid, solid, SOLID haircut. These men are masters of their craft. The hot shave is probably one of the best things about this place, you can't get hot shaves at many places these days. No wait, actually I think the best thing about them is their vacuum system for sucking cut hairs out of your head. Seriously, the most annoying thing about getting a haircut is having to shower afterward or pay for a shampooing so I don't have to deal with the itchy hairs falling out all day. Their use of a vacuum to get rid of the loose and cut hairs is way better than the typical brush or paper towel treatment. I recommend this place to all men, 5/5. read more
