I live in Winston Salem and I've been to this climbing gym 4 times already. This is the best facility in the area by far. There are lots of auto-belays if you want to come by your self. There are a lot of top rope routes, lead climbing area, and bouldering. The second floor has shorter climbs with an outdoor area, a skill training area, and 2 smaller rooms with more climbs and some easier bouldering. There's also a regular gym area, yoga room and a cafe that serves drinks, including alcohol (only after climbing). I was new to climbing and this gym is the best to strengthen my skills. The climbs go down to 5.7's. They have shoes, harnesses, belay devices, and chalk for rent. There's been an on-going groupon for this place (1 or 2 people) and there are special nights like date night and ladies nights for discounts. If you are new to the gym, you have to watch an orientation video and they show you around before you get started. Only complaint: My sister took me to the Greensboro gym the first time and taught me how to do top rope climbing so I passed the top rope/belay test when I got there. We took another friend here and was showing how to do top rope and they discouraged us from teaching him which we thought was weird. They said if he didn't know how to climb top rope he should spend the money and take a class there. It's kind of bizarre because the Greensboro gym goes through a small orientation with you and basically goes through the basics of top rope climbing with you without making you pay them for a class. read more

Nice gym overall, a little on the smaller side but good tall walls with toprope, autobelay, and lead for the ropes folks. Bouldering section is small but can spend a good hour or two in the area. We absolutely love Cliffhangers! When friends visit from out of state, we always take them here. Great for singles, couples or families. Spots fill up fast so sometimes you have to wait to climb but we usually just take turns. Nice little counter on the 3rd floor also to grab a water or beer. read more

I had found out about this place and had wanted to meet up with my best friend local to Mooresville so this place was a win-win. I had never climbed before and my friend had limited experience, so it was a unique experience. For beginners, auto belaying (being clipped to a retractable rope with a harness) seems to be the most obvious choice. However, there are only five of the auto belay paths on the first floor, and the rest are upstairs and used for birthday parties. So if you're coming with the intention of using the auto belay only like we were, you might have to wait and take turns. I have a feeling this won't be our last time there though. It was a super fun activity and I'd highly recommend giving it a try if you're looking for a new activity! read more

This is one of the best, if not the best climbing gym I have been to (and I have been to a lot). The staff is super friendly, cost is fair, and climbs! Wow! There are so many styles of climbing which all come with TP or lead. The lead wall is incredible. The bouldering area is cool. Although the outside climbing was closed due to weather, what a super cool addition to this gym. There are 3 levels with so much more to offer. Grading bouldering only as that's what I climb. Good problems, nothing felt awkward. However they have huge ranges in terms of their grading. V0-V3, V3-V6, V6-V9, V9+. I understand grading is subjective but I like seeing true grads vs ranged grading. Safety Mats are velcroed together which might be a hazard. I fell off a problem and landed right in the velcro section, my foot went through. Someone can get seriously hurt. Clean facility, lead/belay walls look amazing (tho not my style of climbing). Staff was super friendly. $20 dollar day pass which is great. I travel for work and like to go rock climbing in different cities and $20 is definitely on the lower end nowadays. Please keep it at $20. They have a cafe/bar which is cool, though I didn't try anything. If you drink, you are done climbing per their rules. read more

Too busy! ALL THE TIME! Overrun with children to the point they can't accommodate them. They offer a membership over the summer but then have summer camps and bring in other schools/camps/day care to the tune of 60+ kids in a day -- making the ability to climb under a 9 or 10 route nearly impossible-- all day long. I love kids and am happy to share and wait my turn but there simply isn't enough under 9 climbing routes to accommodate everyone in a reasonable time frame. They don't care about their customers, especially a beginner. Just their bottom line. The people who work here have been very kind and understanding about it (except the management) but when I asked to cancel my membership on the 21st they said I missed it by a day and had to pay another month--I get they have a policy but I've paid $432 (including next month) and been able to climb 4 times in 3 months-- due to the gym being so packed. It makes me not even want to make the trip to try to climb. Unfortunate because I used to love to climb (at another gym). read more

I visited Cliff Hangers the other day by myself looking to whip myself into shape by doing something fun. My plan was to go in for the day then if I enjoyed climbing I would purchase a membership. Overall my experience was not too bad. I was given a lovely orientation to learn the ropes then I was off. I enjoyed all of the walls but especially the auto belays! (The boulder wall was a tad scary) The only complaint I would really have would have to be the customer service at the desk. As soon as I walked into the gym there was a young man wearing a name tag that said "Jensen" that greeted me with a groan and a what do you want. I explained to him that I needed a single day pass and that I would need to rent a harness and a size 14 shoe. He said "damn you got big feet". I have no idea what provoked him to say such a thing as I felt like I was being a respectful customer. After that experience I decided I would hold off on the membership. I plan on trying to make it down to InnerPeaks in Charlotte so hopefully that will be better. P.S. the shoes run very small I had to bump my 14 up to a 15. read more

One of the biggest climbing gyms in NC! Good variety of climbing types and skill levels including MANY auto belays and lead walls. Bright, clean, and fresh feeling. Really nice kids area with a slide (aimed at elementary ages, not toddlers). Outdoor climbing was shaded. Cafe was closed, but the foosball, lounging chairs, and fireplace looked pretty sweet. The staff was friendly. Pricing was on par with other large gyms. I did notice several adults in street shoes so maybe it attracts more first-time climbers? Hint: Definitely get the climbing shoes! This was my first time here and only my 2nd time climbing. Given that, I only felt comfortable doing the auto belay. My husband used to climb a lot years ago but he hung out with me and did auto belay also. As I am posting this, there are 9 other reviews on Yelp, all 5 stars and I've got to think some of these are let's just say exaggerated but then again, everyone has their opinion. To say that there is a huge gym on the 3rd floor is a stretch. I could not describe it as huge in any way. There is also a small (20x20 maybe) area on the 2nd floor that has weights, some cardio equipment and TRX. I got bored with the auto belay in such a short amount of time, that I went up to 2nd floor to do some weights and try to recoup some of the money I had spent for climbing. Thankfully I had a groupon and a discount off of that. So the other thing that I feel that other reviews exaggerate about is the number of auto belays available. There were 7 on the first floor and 2 of them were the exact same and definitely the most challenging of all of them because there were so few holds and they were stretched so far apart that my 6' tall husband couldn't even stretch his arms long enough to make it work!! And 2 of the 7 were set up with that pattern. In 1.5 hours we were the only ones to try attempt it. So basically that left 5 auto belay on the first floor that were always in use and 2 completely idle and useless. There were another 4 on the second floor and those were pretty much always in use as well. We spent our 1.5 hours going back and forth between floors trying to find ones that were available and then getting frustrated so that is when I started lifting weights just so I didn't feel that this was a complete waste of my money. I give this place a 4 because of the rest of the climbing area. I think this facility is better geared to people who go to the next step and graduate from auto belay. There was far more available for that type of climbing. Also, the main guy and girl who checked us in were VERY nice and helpful. Then a young guy/teenager comes in and puts a couple big bags of Moes Southwest Grill or QDoba, I don't remember which it was, but he looks at us and says not even jokingly, "that's not for you". Are you freakin kidding me?! HOW RUDE! Why even make the comment because we didn't ask and in no way would we have thought it was for us. Summary, not as many auto belays as other reviews implied but they also change them up every so often so maybe they will update the 2 on the first floor that no one could use. That forced everyone else & their kids to use the other 9 available and so there was always a wait. In 1.5hours, I was able to get 4 climbs in because of this. The only reason I give 4 stars is that it is a good facility for people who are beyond the newbie stage and all of the employees except one, were very helpful. Kids were definitely welcomed (we didn't have any) and had fun. There is also an outdoor climbing section but it was unusually chilly today with some wind, so we didn't check it out. read more

Staff was not hospitable, nor understanding. While safety is of the utmost concern for all, they should provide more expectations when it comes to testing a belay. I have climbed for 20+ years and have a style of belay that is safe, especially with my 4 year old daughter who weighs 30 lbs. So instead of a nice, safe family bonding experience (with a top rope), we had to stick to the over crowded bouldering section where I could not provide a safe to the top spot for my daughter - this was much less safe and enjoyable than top roping. It would have taken the staff member 2 seconds to advise to their policy whereas instead I drove an hour there and back to have our Saturday basically ruined. So in conclusion, post the damn rules, explain the test, make sure everyone is safe and has a good time. read more

Huge shout out to Devin and Paige at Cliff Hangers in Mooresville! I took my 2 sons there for a day of fun and rock climbing and the staff couldn't have been nicer. They made sure my boys were properly secured at all times and very attentive to them. My 4 year old was nervous at first but once he saw the staff climbing up, he was determined to do it as well! I am a clean freak and I will say that this place is very well taken care of. My boys and I had a great time and we can't wait to get back there. read more

Don't be misled by the photo of a two year old climbing. Know your child's sense of adventure and confidence level. My three year old grandson climbed one wall then refused to go down the slide. I had to climb up after him, but he still refused to go down. We were stuck there for at least 20 minutes. There was a gate but it was locked so an employee went to get the key and never came back. Beautiful facility. We will try again when grandson is a bit older and more confident. read more

Fun routes bouldering and on auto belay(but wouldn't mind more auto belays like maybe on certain days of the week)

Cliff Hangers is the newest place to climb up in Moorseville, and the quality of the facility isn't something that should be shoved back from the main road as far as it is. It's clean, modern, unique, challenging, well maintained and staffed, and has a fantastic variety of overhang walls accompanied with a great boulder wall with many top-out options. This was my first time here, and I went with members (they get at least 1 free guest pass per month) and walked in and was asked to fill out a waiver on the iPads in the lobby (Hint, do it before and save yourself some time. I should've known better.) Next was the orientation and safety video. Then, a guy came out and showed us around the second that the video was over, and then I asked to take a Top Rope test so I could climb and belay on those. There are a good number of autobelay walls, but come on. You want more. The routes are fun and challenging, and the walls are super high; 50 foot walls really make a difference. Routes are spaced out well and the holds are well placed and marked (no purple and a semi-purple right next to eachother). There's also a cafe that offers smoothies, bars, and other drinks. There's also a practice area, overhang challenge, private party area, and...outdoor routes complete with astroturf. Insanely cool. Go here, climb here, it's an insanely cool place. It'd kick ass closer to Charlotte, but Moorseville deserves something great too, I suppose :) read more

I have been going to Cliffhangers since they opened and it has consistently exceeded my expectations. The staff is great, the routes are being changed frequently and there is a challenge for most skill levels. I have brought children, grandchildren, and friends and they always love it. I'm only a casual climber so this expansive and very tall indoor and outdoor facility is probably overkill for me. However, it houses inverted walls, boulders and an almost unlimited line of climbing routes. There is a really cool outdoor wall that is accessed from the inside. A yoga room. An exercise room. A bar with smoothies and with local beers on tap. A $70 per month membership includes free yoga and use of the exercise room. Mooresville is the home to a spectacular lineup of recreational facilities with a tennis center right behind this place and a world class karting facility within a short drive and George Pappas Victory Lanes right across the interstate. read more

Fun walls but set up a little bureaucratic for my taste. The staff for the most part did NOT have that warm and friendly rapport I like to have when I give money for goods or services. Also, there was no staff available to belay kids AND they require a $40 class for you to belay your kids, even if you're experienced, OR they will give you a test on the floor that seems way high pressure and not designed to get adult belayers on the floor. On the plus, this increases safety for the climbing kids, just severly limits how many courses you or they can do. So, a trade-off and probably because this place holds competitions? We have visited many places that let us belay our kids and have never had a problem so perhaps we are spoiled. The dining/cafe area could use some pep/ better vibe but at least there is one. The kids had fun. Only seven auto belay courses so if your kids are under 13 that's the only optionsthey have it looks like, unless you pass that belay test. Still, worth a visit. read more

We came for a birthday party. We were given safety rules, and non them said we couldn't go bouldering. As soon as 5 out of our party made it up the walls and taped out we were told we couldn't use the walls anymore. Apparently standing in line is obnoxious. We were not treated our age and other privileges were taken away throught the night although we followed all the rules given. read more

HOLY COW! This place is awesome. 50ft walls are so different. My son and I have been climbing for years. We went to Cliff hangers and were completely challenged. I just visited Cliff Hangers for the first time, and I gotta say...I'm really impressed! I have been going to inner peaks since I started climbing, and I think cliff hangers has way more to offer! It's 3 stories. Huge gym on the 3rd floor, a cafe, awesome area for kids, an outdoor climbing area, and huge walls! What I liked best about cliff hangers in comparison to inner peaks are how all the climbing areas are spread out. There's ways to escape crowds by retreating to the second floor. The kids have their own area seperate from the main walls which I thought was really awesome. Even though my budget doesn't have room for a monthly membership, I'll definitely be back often! read more

Our first time going to cliffhangers and was a major bummer. First, you pay but it doesn't include harness or shoe rental both are extra which is crazy for rock climbing place. The "orientation" was 5 min and they don't really explain anything in the facility. The whole bottom floor only has 2 auto belays so you have to wait in line with mostly everyone else that is there that isn't an intense rock climber. We didn't even realize there was stuff upstairs until we saw other people up there. We venture up there and finally found a cool place that our kids (5&9)were enjoying (the slide area) and they came in and shut it down for a birthday party essentially shutting off the only area we were enjoying with no notice. Staff was super unhelpful when we asked about the cafe. We ended up leaving after only about 45 min. Wasted 80+ dollars. Definitely not worth it for a day out unless you are an avid rock climber already. read more

First time going with my two friends and we loved it! My friends were afraid of heights but they reached the top at least twice before we left. Their cafe has an amazing view of the place and their place isn't over crowded. I wish they offered an annual membership. Other than that, I'm definitely coming back.
