Some Yelpers in the know mentioned Clever Coyote, and my lovely wife and I wanted to check this place out recently. Clever Coyote is located on the second floor of the Robey Hotel, and I dare say that this is a cool hidden gem of a place in Wicker Park. Amazingly, they have a Happy Hour deal every day from 5 to 7PM, and that includes weekends my friends. Virtually all of their drinks and food items are $8. For drinks we tried the Black Hole Sun (served in a cool-looking skull vessel), the semi-strong Rye Tai, the unique Purple Rain, and the very strong Oaxacan on Broken Glass. We also had a plate of barbacoa nachos, loaded with toppings if not liquor. Considering the very decent and buzzing crowd this Friday evening, we thought the level of service was rather efficient. What an awesome spot, especially for happy hour! Clever Coyote is located inside The Robey on the second floor. It's a relatively small place but doesn't seem it when you're there. They have a pool table, tables/couches, and have a speakeasy type of vibe and feel to it. They have a daily happy hour deal from 5-7pm where everything on the menu is $8. We got so many drinks and 2 apps and spent less than $100 which is unheard of!! Our server was awesome too, he was super personable and chill. I don't have a bad thing to say. Definitely a cute HH spot to hit up for cheap bites, low vibes and fun games. The ambiance is chill and the attendees aren't too loud. I wouldn't suggest coming alone as the crowd isn't a place where you can mingle and make friends. More so come with your own crew. The food is pretty good for the $8 HH. I appreciate the staff. I went to Clever Coyote for my first time on Friday and it did not disappoint! I came for drinks with a girlfriend and it was the perfect spot for it. I ordered the Purple Rain and it was delightful and very tasty! I will say the music was a bit loud but other than that, the experience was really good. I enjoyed that the lights were dimmed as it made the ambience really nice. In addition, they decorated for Halloween which I thought was really cute too. I can't speak for what was in this space prior, but my friends and I were looking for a spot to grab a drink, and I didn't realize this place was on the second floor of this hotel with beautiful big windows to look around from. At night I'd imagine this place to look pretty nice given the lighting on the ceiling, but overall it was nice. Just a little too basic for me. I think they can definitely do more with the space, but we enjoyed our time nonetheless. Our drink orders definitely took a long time to come out however which was a little annoying, but we liked our drinks. They have chicken wings and I believe bao buns in case you are hungry, but we didn't order food here. I'll return in the future, but at night! PS - there is a pool table as well! read more

We really enjoyed the Purple Rain, Sucker Punch & Black Hole Sun. We also ordered several appetizers. The fried pickles were the star of the food. Our server was excellent. I see some of the previous reviewers have said makes it seem like this place "ruined" a previously special place, but I still think the bar is a nice place to visit. The Robey Hotel is a lovely hotel property but apparently if you need to get any work done in the afternoon, you'll have to stay in your room or go across the street to Starbucks or Foxtrot. I stopped in at 3:30pm on a Monday to order (and pay for!) some food and drink while finshing some work, but was told there are no laptops allowed. I can see where that might be enforced after 5pm, but during the afternoon? This place used to be a lounge - mostly for hotel guests I'd think - in the morning / afternoon and a nice cocktail bar at night. I'd often do afternoon work meetings there that would usually turn into drinks. I'm quite sure this new spot "Clever Coyote" also has great drinks and food as others have said, but don't go there expecting to escape the drudgery of your home office and work with a drink. Kind of sad, because there really aren't any comparable places without going to the west loop or downtown. Note that at 3:30pm, the place was empty except for staff talking about promising promotional themes. Don't get me wrong, I will probably come back here when I don't have to work and enjoy their delicious tiki drinks, but this "clever" policy makes the property seem pretty unfriendly to the neighborhood and business travelers alike. read more

Cute new "tiki" bar located on the 2nd floor of The Robey hotel. There is limited seating at the bar itself but there's plenty of other seating via tables and sofas. It's a pretty spacious and open layout. Drinks were not bad, a little inconsistent when we went but it was only the second day it opened. I'd say it's very loosely a tiki bar through the menu. The vibe and decor is modern and boutique-ee just like the hotel. The music was interesting... it went from cool hip hop to random 90s songs like the Macarena? lol. Ruined one of the best spots in Chicago. This was such a great lounge and now it's been turned into just another of 1000 generic bars. The worst location transformation I've ever seen. Went from a mid-century modern sleek and cool vibe to a try-hard bar stool nothing. Complete with a single awkward and unnecessary arcade game. This bar is the equivalent of hearing your favorite Indie band's music used in a minivan commercial. Whoever is responsible should not be put in charge of anything important anywhere. In the end it's just a bar and not the end of the world....but it's a real bummer to see someone take a well-designed space in a city like Chicago - which is known for good design - and devolve it into a college-town-pizza-pub-who-gives-a-damn. Especially when it's in a hotel as awesome and iconic as The Robey. I'm embarrassed for them. And if you don't care about what it used to be and are just looking for a good bar, there are tons of far better options all around. read more
