Cleveland Marathon

Talk about a humbling experience…read more I decided to run the Cleveland Marathon because I had run the Columbus as well as the Cincinnati Flying Pig. I wanted to cap off the Ohio Triple Crown of marathons with Cleveland. Only a few more lines about non race items but I think it is important to know for out of towners considering this race. If you find a hotel in the downtown area there are plenty of places to go eat and things to see. Our hotel was semi-accommodating with late checkout but if you are a slower runner, as I ended up being, it may be a rush back to your hotel. Cleveland is a friendly and safe place. About the convention: The packet pickup was in the Cleveland Convention Center. This space was large enough and accommodating for a race of this size. There were many booths and plenty of knick knacks to pick up and try. Rite Aid sponsored a cool health checkup area that was free. You could go around and have your BP checked as well as other items. Picking up your bib was by number so you had to go to a table with a list of all the entry names and find your bib number. This was kind of strange but did not cause much of a hiccup. Shirts were all the way in the back much like any other race pickup. About the race: The race began on the west side of Quicken Loans Arena facing north. The start line is beautiful with the huge LeBron mural as a backdrop. They had the Cleveland Cavs hype man Ahmaad Crump leading the pre-race rally. Pumping up the crowd and leading what was an excited city into a time where they were getting ready for the ECF. Corrals were appropriately positioned and managed by the volunteers controlling the flow in and out. Pacers were clearly identifiable with signs attached to sticks as well as pacer shirts. There were very few clocks throughout the race. Maybe at the half and a few other spots but they were extremely sparse. For what ended up being my extremely difficult race this probably saved my life but for others shooting for PRs based on official clock time it would be nice to have more clocks. The same could be said about mile markers. I believe these were more consistent to each mile but without the clocks alongside them they seemed only half useful. Perhaps I am spoiled because Chicago is the only marathon that has a set up like it. I know everyone has a watch, phone, or timer of some sort these days but it is still comforting to know the official time if one of the other items fail. Less of a complaint and more of just a fact but the road conditions here were not ideal. At least in the downtown area potholes were all over. So as a runner you need not only be aware of the first mile ducking and diving through crowds but also the uneven pavement as to not twist an ankle. Aid stations were well placed and plenty up until the last three miles or so. Maybe it was my delirium but it felt like running down the highway for the last three miles was the worst way to finish. Aid stations were good up until this point but then they became sparse. One station ran out of Gatorade and others had only warm drinks left. They had a good amount of volunteers on bikes who were checking the wellbeing of some of the slower runners at this point. This was phenomenal. As I was one of the people they were concerned about it was certainly comforting to know that I wouldn't simply pass out on the highway by myself. The first half of the course runs through the downtown area and neighboring city limit towns. As you get out to 13+ towards the second half you are on a down and back that seems to go on forever. Again, this may be a personal gripe but I really don't like tracing back my route. It is another mental battle that you have to fight. To see mile 20 when you are approaching mile 13 is a brutal mental test. Watching the elites pass you on the right is ok but as you get to 14, 15, 16 and then realize you have to turn around to just do it again, it really can break you. I think it did break me. So if they could change the route for me that would be great but if I'm the only one then I guess I need to suck it up and be better prepared. They say this is a flat course and again I feel like a big cry baby but it did not seem that flat to me. Chicago is the true definition of flat. Cincinnati feels like climbing Mount Everest and Cleveland was somewhere in-between but closer to flat. It was wet, humid, hot and dry at different points throughout this race. The surrounding communities were supportive and volunteers/organizers were great. A relatively smaller race for what I consider a major city but still worth doing another time. Post-race goodies were plenty and I believe you were allowed one spectator to help you get through the finishers area. I don't recall as I nearly passed out but it is always nice having your loved one there to fall into their arms. Marathons are a crazy thing to do and are extremely unpredictable. You can train for months but anything can happen on any given Sunday.

One of the most organized races in the Midwest, Cleveland Marathon offers volunteers, workers and…read moreracers a very well planned weekend of competition. For the past two years I've both run the half and stayed to volunteer at the final water stop for those running the full. I worked with the staff to organize our water stop and it was seamless. They offer training, but if you're short on time they'll send you your shirts an instructions, no problem. As a runner you're able to sign up for pace teams to run with leading up to and day of race. Although i chose to train independently leading up, I did stay with a pace team day of and it definitely helped me reach my goal. At packet pick up you're able to take advantage of an expo packed with everything a runner could dream of. This year I picked up a pair of recovery flip flops and they've save my arches all summer long. You can even sign up for the pasta dinner served the night before. The coarse for the half is relatively flat and full of bands and entertainment. You hardly need music along the way. The last couple of miles are a bit rough - besides the obvious, there is little shade and its on one of the only inclines. Post race you're able to logo in and grab your chip time instantly. Then take you and your medal to the party including multiple forms of recovery hydration, snacks and music. A qualifier for Boston, Cleveland Marathon brings elite athletes from all over the country - and world, but it also welcomes first time "finishers" just the same. This was a great first half to run and I look forward to continuing to improve my time yearly.

The Asian Festival in Cleveland is a 2-day event that is perfect for families (including children)…read moreand friends. It is held annually on a small section of Payne Ave., right outside of the Asia Plaza shopping centre. The loo/toilets/bathrooms are also located inside Asia Plaza. I had no problem finding a a location to park my car. There were lots of free parking lots on the corners of Payne Ave. and east 23rd and east 24th streets - these parking lots may change for next year's event so check the Asian Festival website for updated parking information. I visited the festival in May 2023. I was there for 2 days because I assisted one of the booths. My favourite part of the festival was watching all the artistic performances especially the lion dance. There were plenty of food vendors and a few clothing/accessory vendors. The FOOD/drink lines are long for the majority of the festival but thankfully I didn't have to wait in a line for food because the vendor I was with had a friend who waited in line and got us food. I had pork dumplings which were delicious although I normally try not to eat pork. If you really are hungry and you can't wait in one of the food queues, then I suggest walking to Han Chinese Kabob and Grill or Koko Bakery for food. I went to both places (Koko on Saturday for lunch during my break and Han on Sunday for dinner) and enjoyed what I ordered (however, there was a slight delay because both businesses got alot of foot traffic due to the Asian Festival). I did actually wait in line at the festival on Sunday with my 2 friends (I got to leave my vendor shift early) but the line moved quickly. I waited in the natural coconut water line. My friend Olga wanted coconut water so me and another friend waited in line with her. The weather felt really hot all weekend but it was actually only in the 70's (F). For safety, some police officers were at the entrance and exit while also strolling through the festival. What I found slightly strange is that some vendors did not have an Asian theme. For example, the FBI had a table and an Immigration law firm had a table too (haha). I understand that many festivals will always have "out of place" vendors which is fine. Overall, this is a well managed festival and I will be back. **** - 69/150 total reviews in 2023 - 620 total overall Yelp reviews - Reviewed on 7 June 2023

A few vendors were selling candy, cookies and Jewelry at tables. A Chinese restaurant and pharmacy are here. Take a walk next door to visit the Asian grocery store. We had seats in section 341 and it was a nice view. The stadium was nice and most of it appeared well maintained. The rain was intermittent and we had ponchos so there's that. Food was expensive as expected but we did find lower cost options. The lines moved at a good pace. All in all, great experience.

Tickets were very…read moreaffordable as the Browns season ticket holders got them free and were willing to resell them at value prices. Parking was not an issue as I work downtown and went after work. Admission to the event was about what you would expect; you need to have your electronic ticket available on your phone. The security check was fast and efficient. I was struck by how generic the concourse was; there are plenty of food stands but not a huge variety and there is really no style or anything to see. The bathrooms were clean, but also pretty basic. I was disapointed that the water fountains were not working. I did not see any of the promotional opportunities even though I walked through about half of stadium. My seat was the last row of lower bowl near the Dog Pound end of the Stadium. The seat was comfortable and not too crowded. The concert started about 10 minutes late from the day of start time which was 30 minutes later then the original announced start time. The stage was hard to see for a while since we were looking right into the sun and the stage was very dark. It also did not help that the band members were in dark clothing and were blending into the background. The video screens did help significantly. The sound was pretty good for a stadium show, loud without being oppressive. Journey put on a very good 80 minute show, playing all their hits. I will say the lead singer has a great voice and very energetic stage presence. If you get a chance to see them I would say go for it. Overall Cleveland Browns Stadium looks nice from the outside and inside the bowl, but the concourses could really use some sprucing up. There didn't seem to be a lot of variety in the concessions, mostly the expected stadium food. Pretty much a serviceable modern stadium, but not near the top of the NFL heap.

Ready for a HORROR STORY that makes one wonder what happened to CUSTOMER SERVICE…read more In October 2013, I received delivery of a steel cabinet from the manufacturer (Pucel Enterprises, Inc., of Cleveland, Ohio). After the driver left, I unraveled the shrink wrap and the cardboard covering the corners and top of the cabinet and noticed that the interior of the cabinet was extensively scratched up and the top of the cabinet (above the doors was bent in such a manner that the cabinet was a loss) and could not be used. I immediately contacted the local shipping company (who delivered the item) and informed them of the damage and they told me they would be happy to pick up the damaged cabinet but they needed authorization from Pucel or the firm that I purchased the cabinet from. I called Pucel and they told me, not their problem, contact the firm I purchased it from. Since that time, I have spoken with several companies that do cross country shipping and they have told me that, THIS MATTER IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE SHIPPER. To date, Pucel has sent me ONE can of touch-up paint and told me that that was ALL they were going to do and to pay the vendor and enjoy the cabinet. They also told me that calling them directly was not going to resolve this matter as they were not the responsible party and have no obligation or interest in this matter. Pucel personnel then stressed that they will not replace the NON-useable, damaged cabinet (still sitting in my sitting in my back yard). The vendor has attempted to help me resolve the matter by ATTEMPTING to have Pucel authorize picking up the old cabinet but of course, no action to date. Terrible customer service, don't care about the customer, don't bother us (from Pucel) and they have the nerve to tell me to pay for a damaged, non-useable item. CRAPPY response from a business that uses the punch line, family owned and operated!!
