Profit Over Patients: A Deeply Disappointing Experience…read more This dental practice has left me questioning whether patient care is even a priority anymore, or whether everything has become a sales opportunity.   The practice abruptly stopped accepting insurance but told me they would honor my existing copays through the end of the year. Despite that assurance, I subsequently received an invoice for more than my agreed-upon copay and had to dispute the charge. That alone was frustrating enough.   Then came the sales pitch. When I arrived for a scheduled appointment, I was subjected to a hard sell for the practice's in-house insurance plan. First, the front desk staff worked on me. Next, Amanda, the hygienist, took her turn. Then Dr. Amanda Thompson was brought in to continue the pitch. What should have been a routine dental appointment felt more like being passed down a sales assembly line. Dr. Thompson subsequently left the practice, but the sales tactics apparently haven't changed.   Recently, my spouse went in for a scheduled cleaning and experienced the same pressure to purchase the practice's insurance plan. She was perfectly willing to pay the full price for her cleaning out of pocket. But because she did not purchase their plan, hygienist Amanda walked her out of the office, and the practice charged her a $100 no-show fee.   Let that sink in: she showed up for her scheduled appointment, was willing to pay for her cleaning, and left feeling so upset by the interaction that she paid the $100 fee.   How does a patient who actually shows up for an appointment end up being charged a no-show fee? I would like a clear explanation of that policy and why it was applied in this situation.   Taken together, these experiences paint a deeply troubling picture: disputed billing, aggressive sales pressure, and a punitive fee imposed on a patient who says she arrived ready for her appointment and willing to pay for her care.   Patients should not have to endure a sales pitch from multiple members of a dental team just to receive routine dental care. They should not have to wonder whether declining an insurance product will affect how they are treated.   A dental practice should earn patients' trust through quality care, transparency, and professionalism--not pressure tactics and billing disputes.   Are this practice's financial targets now more important than its relationships with loyal patients? We deserve better. I hope management takes a hard look at these policies and how patients are being treated, because this is no way to build lasting relationships or demonstrate that patient care comes first.
