I was really optimistic about an internet service provider that doesn't lock you into contracts or gives sales pitches about adding additional services every time you call. However, my experience with Clear has been excruciatingly painful and beyond frustrating. I purchased a month of service and a $150 router via credit card up front. I realized very quickly that their service wasn't up to par and would not work for me, so I promptly cancelled and asked for my guaranteed refund. That was in March. I've been trying for two months to get almost $200 back. They finally sent the money, but in the form of pre-paid visas which you cannot get cash back on. This is New York. Land of cash only. What am I going to do with that??? Oh, and the kicker? I went to the website on the card to activate it, and the website DOESN'T EVEN EXIST. When I've called (which has happened at least once every two weeks) their customer service folks are horrible. I mean, I guess (?) they're trying--they must have gone through some kind of training where they're told to repeat what the customer says back so said customer knows you're listening. They do that, but they're literally just repeating what you say back. It's like there's no comprehension involved, which is even more frustrating. Recently moved to new place needed an Internet provider. Unfortunately the building was not wired for Internet. I heard about clear and decided go give them a try. The 14 day return period was a great incentive. I picked up the modem from the clear store in Brooklyn on Kings Hwy. Setup up was fast and I was up and running in no time with consistent transfer rate of 2.5-3 mbs/sec. Happy with overall service. Would recommend if there are no other options. read more

Attempted to use two different debit/credit cards for one time payment for a relative's internet service. Provided the company with one card number but the charge was declined. Provided them with another card to complete one time payment. Without consent or notification Clear kept two card numbers on file. They proceed to charge the orginal card number for monthly service which was not authorized. When that card was canceled due to fraud charges by them, they went on to try to charge the second card number provided for an obscene amount. Thank god the card company flagged and blocked the charge. Morale of the story, if you provide them with your account information they will keep it without telling you and charge it without authorization whenever they see fit. Both cards were canceled and re-issued and I hope to never deal with them again. read more

Had the service for years. When it works, it works well for me. But when it doesn't this company had/has the single worst customer service of any company outside of Verizon I have ever experienced. Horrible. Internet. Provider. Not ideal for multiple users unless everyone is what I would call a "casual" internet user. These kind of users check email, browse the web, don't do much intense downloading or streaming of anything. Everyone Else? Avoid this provider. It's download speeds are roughly 1-3 mbps. If you're alone and the only one who uses internet in your apartment/house maybe this would be ok for you. Not the greatest for wanting to much surfing on Youtube, Hulu or Netflix. Add in other users? Forget about it. It's cheap for a reason. Constantly trying to watch Hulu or Netflix on my PS3 and it has to consistently go into a loading screen, making any viewing choppy at best and largely frustrating. Imagine someone hitting pause every two minutes and keeping it on pause for a good 30 seconds. If you are a heavy internet user, meaning you depend on it to catch up on some TV, watch movies, watch news clips, download pictures in a reasonable amount time or any file for that matter. signed up for this new internet service provider about a week ago. Once i received the equipment in the mail I went and set up the service. hookup of the modem and getting online was fast and easy. The modem tells you if you're getting a good signal which I was. Five bars. Unfortunately even with the strongest signal possible and having moved the modem to several different locations within my house the modem would just shut down and start re-booting up all over again.This would happen numerous times during the few days that I had the modem. Avoid at all costs. Waste of time and money. Had the home-based "puck" internet. Lousy signal almost all of the time, especially when it rains, is cloudy, too hot, etc. In other words, it is not worth a second thought. Despite its seemingly indestructible look and name, the "puck" broke after sitting on my windowsill for a month, basically untouched. Maybe it just felt bad that it was doing such a crap job. We purchased Clear's highest internet package and it's a terrible. We pay $50 a month, and our internet connection is terrible. When I called the rep, we found out that our download speed was clocked at half the normal amount and that their was issue with one of their towers in the area. Now the customer service was excellent, the man's name was Adam, and he did a great job, but as the company as an internet provider is just awful. Their recommendation to me was that I limit my internet use, and wait until a new tower is built, which is total bunk because that would be like me telling them that I'll pay half of my bill.The least they should have done would be to offer me a credit, especially when the problem had been a three week long issue. When I first got Clear, the first device was defective but they sent me a new one right away since i was in the 30 day trial period. It worked great for browsing the internet and downloading music/movies and I used it for my rooted Nook Color and laptop. I never noticed any slow speeds or intermittent internet connections. Lo and behold, I very recently canceled my TW cable service and bought an internet streaming device and that is where all of my problems started! Again, at first, everything seemed to be okay and then up until three weeks ago, I started having major major problems. The second device's speed started fluctuating all over the place, the screen suddenly went blank for no reason, and I had to to refresh my modem constantly. I complained to their cstsvc and they sent send me another modem (the 3rd) and charged me $9.99 shipping and handling up front. I then noticed, that on my modem, the connection was great but everytime I watched Hulu or Netflix on my streaming device or started to download movies/tv shows, I would experience freezing/stalling or very slow download speeds. So I called cstsvc again and they first said they was high level congestion in my area and wait 24 hours for the connection to speed back up. I was also told that I used too much data and that I should stop downloading and using my streaming device so much. I was like "huh" but I didn't really get it until I saw the customer forums and saw that anyone deemed "a high usage user" their speeds would be capped so that other customers do not have to suffer from other people's overusage..."cough, bs!" And they confirmed that they use a built-in software program that monitors those "offenders" and slows their speeds automatically. So today was the last straw, I was home sick with the flu and this morning I had fast download speeds of 5.5mbps - 9.34mpbs, Hulu was working great and my files were downloading super-fast. I then took a nap and woke up at 5pm...I could barely get on the internet with download speeds averaging 0.46mbps - 0.68mbps. After doing extensive research and saw that other customers were suffering, I called their cstsvc with a vengeance and demanded to cancel my service (without being charged a termination fee). I told them I didn't want to hear anymore of their scripted bullshit and that I have a high level of technical knowledge and that any excuse they dole out would be refuted. I told them either give me back my speeds I paid for or terminate my contract; they couldn't do the former so it was a done deal. As of February 10th, I will no longer be a Clear customer. Good riddance and don't let door hit you on your way out. And if they try to charge me anything, I will not only notify my bank that they are fraudulent charges but I will also add a complaint to the BBB's 3,000 complaints already on file about this scam of a company! P.S. Did I forget to mention that the owe $737 million dollars to Mayor Bloomberg and are in serious debt and that they have a class action lawsuit against them as well? read more

It worked well for a year, and then a few weeks ago the service grew unreliable during business hours M-F. I record interviews via Skype, and the service has degenerated to the point where I can't use Skype except at night or on the weekends. I contacted Clear customer service and their only proposed remedy was that I buy a new modem. I'm now looking for another provider. read more

I don't know this particular service location (320 7th Ave) since I dealt with Clear online. This review is for the Clear service in general, not the sales location. Clear is by far the worst internet I've ever used. The benefits of no contracts and easy sign-up do NOT at all outweigh the weekly if not daily headaches of the internet NOT working. I can't tell you how many hours of my life I have wasted on the phone with them, telling them that the internet is out and just getting the same response: "hmm, we will look into this....there are no reported service outages in your area. We will get back to you (they never did once). Do you have your your router close to a window (yes, it has full bars too...it's just that your internet sucks and even at full bars no data can be transferred). Oh, and when it rains or is otherwise not perfect weather outside their internet goes out. For example it rained for 10 minutes here this morning and it has now been 3 hours without service (Brooklyn NY zip 11215). I DO NOT SIGN UP FOR CLEAR! spend the extra money for proper internet via lines instead of wasting your time on this mobile-like service that works only half the time. read more

Sorry - but it simply doesn't work. Inspite of beeing "located right next to a transmitter" and always receiving full signal strength the downloads speeds are apalling. On top of that, the modem signal is so weak that you need to be in the next room, anything further than that and you have no signal. They sent me a new modem to fix the problem, but it didn't. I actually found the customer service to be better than most but it still doesn't work and that's a shame becuase now i have to go back to Verizon - ugh. read more

These are the stupidest bunch of numnuts on the planet! Customer Service, is, BBBAAAD, but only when you can actually get through! Technical expertise, none, a Muppet wearing oven gloves would do a better job. The service starts off slow, less than 3mbps, and then get slower as the more you download the more the throttle you, despite the fact that their contract says " No Preset Downlink Speedcap". If you wanna stream or download movies it's a no no. If you're an old man and wanna play computer chess or Who Sunk my Battleship... it would still be toooo slow. I don't understand all those negative reviews. I got mine up and running in a few minutes. I bought the middle plan $35 with the idea I will upgrade it if it's not enough. I have 3 computers, printer and Roku streaming player hooked up. So far so good. Pages are loaded fast, secure website like bank and credit cards accounts no problem. Just watched a movie on my TV via Roku player, it did not freeze for any single time. I guess if I upgrade to $50 plan than it will be superfast, but so far I don't see a reason. Tech support is helpful either by phone or chat. There are 4 lights on the modem indicating the signal strength. I saw 3 lit. The speed was fine, but I called them anyway. They refreshed the connection on their side and I got all 4. But I did not notice any speed difference. Thanks God! Just one box, no cables, wires. This is the future anyway. I will test it more and then will cancel my Cablevision Internet. Why to pay $50 when I can pay $35. In 3 months it will pay off the modem and it's mine. Good luck to everybody! read more

Someone gave me a Clear modem with pre-paid time left on it. I've used it for a year with no problems in Midwood, Brooklyn. Fast, strong connection - even better than Optimum which we also have. Our Optimum modem is on the 3rd floor. I'm in the basement receiving a weakened signal. I keep the Clear modem in the basement but even when I move my laptop up a floor or two I still get a great signal from Clear. read more

Why do I have to give a star at all? This company and their service is the worst. Expect absolutely minimal speed/connection. Expect even worse customer service. I think their customer service strategy is to baffle you into thinking that something can actually be fixed. Then they have you wait 24-48 hoping that the usage in the area will drop. If this works, you have shoddy service for a couple of hours until the traffic pics back up. Of course, it will appear that they magically fixed your Internet. But, don't be fooled. They did nothing. They simply cross their fingers and hope you get a connection and don't drop their service. Finally, expect to spend hours on the phone with some nice young person who will help you troubleshoot with a bunch if silly techniques that obviously will not fix what is simply a sh!tty server on their part.... Yeah, I had a very similar experience. Was told it would be compatible with my mac, which it was not. I tried cancelling multiple times. You get someone that dosen't speak English very well telling you that there are only specific times that you can call in to cancel. With that excuse I missed the 14d refund period. Also they've continued charging me for new months of service that I've never used as I keep trying to cancel my account. Clear Internet service is unreliable, slow, useless. AVOID

From the beginning, Clear was a headache. I did not sign a contract which was what I wanted, but the equipment did not work and I spent over three hours on the phone with the tech people to get it working. They finally decided it was the ethernet cord, and told me to buy another, out of my pocket. Two weeks later when I finally got it up and running, they did not want to give me an adequate kickback for the time I did not get to use the internet. I was paying $50 and they wanted to give me a 5 dollar discount or something. After getting angry and arguing with them about that AND the ethernet cord, they relented. It did not turn out to be the ethernet cord at all. They tech people either did not want to do their job or did not know how to. After that, if it rained, the service went out.If it snowed, the service went out. If you want to pay your bill in person, they charge you $5 on top of the $50 fee for the service, just to pay it . I asked them to wait for me to pay my bill, and they charged my debit card without my permission, had to scramble to get the money in the account before the end of the day in order to avoid being charged $35 by my bank. I got Clear to rescind it, and later paid it, but then they tried to say it was $100 that I owed them. Again, I asked them to take that off, and they did however if you are not paying attention, they will charge you hand over fist. I finally stopped using their service. I was going to go to another company but they reduced my fee from 50 to 25 monthly. The problem then was that they would not send me a monthly bill, even an email, and I would forget. So then they would charge me a reconnection fee. I got them to take it off twice, The last straw came when they charged me for some time ( it was a matter of a few days, and it had not been paid ) but they did not send me an email and after two weeks, they turned off my internet. I guess I was supposed to log on randomly into my Clear account, as the customer rep told me to do every month around the 17th to pay my bill. The last time I talked to them on the phone they did not tell me about this balance so I guess I am supposed to be a mind reader and figure it out. But they real reason they do it, I am convinced, is just so they can charge the fee to reconnect. I would not trust them with my credit or debit card, and I would give them zero stars if I could. I have tried Clear internet service for only one month and it was the worst I've ever had. The speed is extremely slow and unstable. It was almost impossible to watch videos and play games online. It got even worse at night so I would rather sleep early than do something since I could not do anything anyway. I had it for a month and I could no longer stand it. I am very surprised by the reviews on Yelp, as I am very happy with my Clear internet service. My experience attempting to sign up with Time Warner was basically an infuriating Monty Python sketch, until I gave up and looked elsewhere. I went with Clear on the recommendation of a tech friend Ordering Clear was very easy - everything was upfront and the salespeople were knowledgable and polite (unlike Time Warner). The setup took less than 5 minutes. It didn't work at first, and when I called Clear, I got a human being right away, and he fixed the problem in less than a minute. Since then, I've had a beautiful signal (always 5 bars) and my download speed ranges between 3 and 6 Mbps, but usually 5-6 Mbps. (I was warned I might need to move around the receiver to get an optimal signal, but mine seems to work great no matter what). Upload speed has been about 1 Mbps consistently. I stream Netflix and download large files without a problem. I am really happy with Clear. read more
