Let me start this review by saying I found it very hard to select a service provider for landscape design. The work is expensive and if it's done wrong it's very expensive and painful to fix. I have had that experience twice with other landscape design companies that did small jobs on my property so I was very discerning when looking for a company to design the patio and plantings around my newly installed swimming pool. Trying to find someone with the right combination of design ideas, and the ability to execute that design is a true leap of faith that requires you to put your trust into the provider. We interviewed 7 or 8 different companies, all of whom seemed to be able to do the job. In the end, we selected CLC Landscape Design based on multiple meetings with Rich and his team, and the feeling of trust we had in their design and their ability to execute. CLC interviewed my wife and I to understand what we liked in a design and what we were looking for in our backyard. They came back with a beautiful design that included a dry-laid bluestone patio, and a whole collection of low maintenance plantings surrounding the pool. The work was completed over a week or so and the outcome was absolutely fantastic. The CLC team turned a nightmare of a space into a resort like pool that totally blew us away. As they promised, the team showed up every day, were great to work with and made the process totally seamless. What I really want to share in this review however is what happened a few years later when we ran into a problem. When we installed our pool, the pool company was responsible for back-filling and compacting around the pool in preparation for the patio. Based on CLC's recommendation we even waited some time before installing the patio to ensure the ground would be totally compacted. After a few years, however we still experienced settling of the patio so I reached out to CLC. CLC came out to take a look and then sent a team back to my house to reset the patio and fix the settling. Even though the issue was caused by the pool installer, CLC stood behind their work and fixed an issue they didn't even cause. Even better is the team went above and beyond and fixed other things that were just caused by normal wear and tear. Now the patio looks brand new! There are a lot of people that you can hire for landscape design but it is very rare to find a company that stands behind their work and delivers such outstanding customer service. I want to thank the CLC team for an amazing initial design, and even more for helping me when I had an issue years later. The patio looks fantastic! If you are considering a landscape design project, large or small there is zero reason not to reach out to the CLC team. Their design was great, the execution of that design was amazing, and when I had an issue they stepped up to get it fixed. What else could you ask for in a service provider. After seeing some of the amazing photos of CLC's work in magazines and social media and reading about their family owned and operated company, we reached out and met with CLC and instantly connected right away. They seemed much more attentive than other companies we contacted, listened to our ideas, gave great advice, and their vision aligned with ours. Our project included removing some trees, re-grading our yard, adding a small round blue stone patio/firepit, plantings and new sod. While our project may have been a smaller one, we were still treated the same and given the same attention and detail as a much larger project. The design phase of the project was invaluable as the created renderings really helped us envision what the end goal would look like. Next, when it was time to break ground, our initial project manager Alex went above and beyond, even taking time out on a Saturday to go stone shopping with us. When Alex had to attend to a family emergency, CLC quickly adjusted and sent us the dynamic duo of Gary and Pat who immediately stepped in, took ownership of the project, and made sure everything continued to run smoothly. Gary, in particular, was in constant communication with us, keeping us updated on project details and assuring us that everything would stay on track. He's a Zen master - when he says don't worry, we're going to fix this/do this instead/I have a better idea, you just feel confident about the end result. Our foreman, Enrique, also deserves an honorable mention as someone incredibly detail-oriented, who always wanted to do things the right way, no shortcuts. He treated our yard as if it was his own, constantly trying to make everything perfect. We appreciated even the little things he did - like staging plants/trees in the shade to protect them from the hot sun or even coming in on a weekend to water those plants. Everything he did demonstrated the attention, care, and pride in his work. Things would look good to us but not to Enrique's sharp eye, and he'd smile and go over it one more time just to be certain. Was our project 100% completely smooth? Of course not, no project is, but Pat/Gary/Enrique/Alex and the rest of the CLC team always adjusted, tackled issues, gave us advice, and figured out the best way to solve whatever problem was at hand, which left us feeling at ease. And, in the end, after the work was finished, everything was cleaned up, no debris left behind, Gary continued checking up on us, weeks later, to ensure our sod is growing properly. The initial meetings were great, very professional. We paid about $2000 for a landscape design which was very beautiful. We were very excited to execute the plan. After that it was downhill. If your project isn't over $100,000 this company could care less about you. We worked with Alex who continually dropped the ball. He said he would send revisions which were never sent. We asked questions which were never answered. Still waiting for updated estimate which he was going to send but never did. Their website is great. They appear very professional but don't be deceived. I have had three projects of varying sizes - designed and installed by CLC. I couldn't have been happier with each and would hope Rich, Jr. and his team might be available for a fourth! I spent a lot of time researching landscape designers to overhaul our backyard. After researching and meeting with various designers it was hard not to select CLC. They were incredibly professional and upfront from the start. They provided two thoughtful designs incorporating various elements we desired such as paver patio, fire pit, and water feature. They are not the cheapest but frankly, you get what you pay for. Alex was our project manager and he was prompt, honest, and executed on time and on budget. The quality of the work CLC and the subcontractors they use is exceptional. Our backyard started as a plain grassed backyard and now it is nothing sort of an oasis. Well, I guess no good deed goes unpunished:) I told them I have a small design and install project and was ok if it was too small. I offered to take pics and submit them remotely to save them a trip. They said they were interested but they never followed. I called 3 times with no callback. If your business is a success and you are busy or my project is too small then I am happy for you, but set that expectation in your advertising or initial call. I contacted several landscapers and decided to go with CLC Landscape Design based on the service levels initially provided by Eric and Rich Sr. They were both very attentive and responsive. When the work started, I was in contact with Rich Jr. and Rob and the experience continued to be great. Rob was absolutely amazing, extremely nice, ALWAYS available to talk, very supportive and walked me through every step of the way. Rob was not pushy and made the entire process very comfortable. The team that arrived to work was very professional, showed up on time, very considerate of the surroundings and the work was completed to my satisfaction on time as promised. If it's possible to give a -10 star review I would. Once CLC got our deposit, they stopped listening to what we wanted, arrived when they knew we wouldn't be home, removed and destroyed existing plants and bulbs that they were told not to touch.....and the employee responsible for that disappeared. I then got to speak with Rich Sr., the owner and big boss, who promised to make things right. That was a year ago and over 50 emails back and forth (please let me know if you would like to see them because I know this sounds like I am making things up). Most importantly, they never removed, or dealt with, an invasive plant that was the main reason that they were hired, despite many reassurances that they were taking care of it. What they did was plant over the problem, when we were intially told by the employee, who was never heard from again, that the soil would be completely replaced and some kind of mesh or screening put in place as a weed control, as the ONLY way to rid the yard of this plant. Now, over a year later, the invasive plant that was never removed or controlled, is slowing choking and killing all the new plants, which were arranged in such a way, as no one can get in to weed (even if that were possible). Rich has my money and he now recommends waiting until the Fall, with more promises, no refunds, no replacement plants, which means losing two full growing seasons more aggrevation than I would wish on my worst enemy. read more

Well I hate to put anything bad about businesses, but if you can't make to your appointment 2 times, blame on weather which today is perfect sun and no rain, last time was cloudy and just didn't show up, didn't call I had to chase someone down to see if anyone was coming and then tell me that I had to reschedule....?? We contacted CLC Landscaping with regard to the installation of lighting to the front of our property, which was poorly lit and precarious to navigate after dark. Rich Jr. listened to our needs, assessed the area, and designed a great lighting solution, using LED path lights and up-lights, in response to our requests. The pricing was fair and reasonable for the fixtures that we purchased. Nate performed the installation efficiently, completing the work in a single day, and was extremely knowledgeable and professional. He also installed the transformer and lighting timer, to ensure that we wouldn't need to ever worry about returning home to a dark house. Rich Jr. revisited the area after dark to evaluate the lighting, and then had Nate return to make some minor adjustments that same week. They both went the extra mile to ensure that the final product was perfect. We've received a ton of compliments on how sharp the house looks at night since the work was completed, and now we don't need to worry anymore about safely coming and going from the house in the dark. Set up an appointment a month out to have them come take a look at a backyard patio install. I received a call from James an hour and a half before the appointment because he wanted more info about the project and to explain to me how the company works. I felt like I was being vetted to see whether the job was worth his time. He told me a backyard patio project would normally run between $25-30K, without even having looked at our yard. At the end of the call he said he could "come by for a minute and discuss," as if he was doing me a favor. Half hour later HIS DAD CALLS ME to say James has something else to do today, can we reschedule? No thanks. Horrible customer service and a poor way to run a business. I understand the company is entitled to chose the projects they want to work on but 1. take a look at the work before you make a judgement call and 2. be straight up-if you're not interested or it doesn't fit your level of investment, let me know. I promise it would be better then having to go through the experience I had this morning. read more

The family-owned and operated CLC Design in Ringwood, New Jersey has landscaped two of my homes in Ridgewood, New Jersey. I worked with Rich Cording Jr. on both homes, one in 2011 and 2014. Rich is an excellent listener and takes what you envision or want and comes up with a workable plan. He is attentive and professional and his follow up customer service is unsurpassed. Rich called and came over to my home several times to check on the status of plants (to see if they needed more water, how they were growing, etc). Rich's staff is also extremely knowledgeable and hard working. I LOVE my new landscaping and when I see flowers bloom (even up until the late fall), I always think of Rich and CLC Landscaping for making my gardens beautiful, plentiful and easy to maintain.
