The class itself was nice, I did a 1 day workshop. The instructions were like a teach and see then do. She showed us what to do then did it step by step with us which was really easy to follow and whenever we messed up she came and helped us and was very encouraging. Here comes the but, I was super disappointed and dissatisfied that I wasn't able to make what I wanted. I told my instructor several times that I wanted to create a bowl similar to how someone else made theirs and that was my goal and she encouraged me to go for it and would assist me if I needed her help. When her assistance was needed to widen the bowl to my desire she simply ignored what I asked. I even told her "oh I wanted it bigger" to which she replied "oh it's fine". The bowl was literally 1/3 size of what the other student made. I feel like it was a waste of my time and money to even do this workshop if the instructor wasn't going to help when she said she would and I didn't get to create something I wanted.

I loved it. For years I've been saying I wanted to take a pottery class and this was exactly the right first step. I attended Muddy Saturdays, it is an adult only class on a Saturday morning where they teach you the basics of using the wheel and basically getting comfortable with clay. It was more challenging than I expected--but the instructors were so supportive and helpful. It was a great time, I cannot wait to go back for another class!

I've been going to clayworks for almost a year now. The staff (Kim) is extremely helpful and always eager to make sure your experience is top-notch. My instructors have been Danielle Lockhart and Susan Hendley. They have made me into the pottery geek that I am today. The education you receive at Clayworks is invaluable. And although it does not come with any sort of certificate of achievement or diploma at the end of a program, the work that is produced is its own reward. They conduct surveys at the end of courses to constantly improve their services and work closely with the community to reach those who need art as an outlet of expression when it wouldn't normally be available to them. I love all that they do with outreach while involving those students who also want to participate. For example, they recycle clay that has been discarded and allow students to make bowls for community projects. I have made over 15 bowls with the outreach program that has gone to deserving homes in the community. If you want a quick experience with a group from work, they do that as well. It's worth every penny you spend here! I hope to see you in the studio, and don't be afraid to talk to other artists. It isn't a library, it's an art studio where inspiration can be found with the simplest of human encounters.

Having taught at several schools in the CMS system, I found Northwest School of the Arts to be one…read moreof the most unique schools in the system. It is a very different option that will appeal to a select group of students. For starters... 1) NWSA is an arts focused school. That means each student picks an artistic "major" ranging from theater to orchestra... dance to visual arts. All students are required to take a class each semester which hones their ability and connects them with students of similar interests. 2) The school is a magnet school, which means that it draws students from around the entire county. Unlike a traditional high school which pulls students from a neighborhood area with the same students in the same classes, you are more likely to find a wide variety of students from different socio-economic levels and ethnic groups. This helps explain why NWSA is the most evenly integrated school of any of the top 5 academic programs in traditional CMS high schools. (NWSA ranks in the top 4 or 5 schools traditional high school programs academically year after year in CMS) 3) The students who attend have a tolerant and accepting school culture. Fights are a rarity compared to other high schools and although no school is perfect, NWSA has fewer conflicts than any other traditional high school in the district. 4) The culture of the campus is open-minded and voices of all views are represented, even if the left is better represented than the right. The difference is that students tend to be more thoughtful in their reasoning and more polite in their exchanges. Overall, based on its strong academic scores, easygoing culture and friendly atmosphere, I rank NWSA as a 5 star option but for students who are seeking a less judgmental and ultracompetitive environment.

Northwest is a very unique school, I will always be thankful for the diverse friends I have made…read moreand the learning I have done over the years. The faculty is a bit polarized, meaning we have some faculty members that are always available, very qualified, reliable, etc and some of them that won't even show up. But even when the teachers don't show up, Northwest makes sure that you get what you need to learn and live. For instance, this year my AP Lit teacher has not shown up all year, but Northwest has set us up with an NCVPS class, an upstanding English teacher that helps facilitate work with us even though it's not really her job, and the principle herself came and talked to us about how this class was gonna get done, addressed our concerns, and told us how they were gonna help. There are definitely faults at Northwest, but I wouldn't regret any of my time spent there.
