if I could give lower than 1 star I would. post surgery he insisted there was nothing wrong with my spine when in truth all he did was attempt to stitch together a damaged disc so first time I did a squat in therapy ( with no weight ) it literally ruptured he continued to gaslight me and play me off on pain management and it got worse and worse. Things didn't get better till I told his practice to shove it and I went somewhere else and they did a fusion now 3 years after the fusion I can do back extension 360 pounds and dead lift 200. I hope dean loses his liscence because it took me longer to recover because of his tomfoolery read more

My wife had surgery by Dr Dean, she was not educated to what was actually happening and did not understand the extent of her surgery. In recovery, the dr did not take to her sense of humor had her rejected for rehab at Mercy which caused her to be moved to a nursing home, which was a nightmare in itself. Dr Dean had zero bedside manor and he abandoned my wife and her follow up treatment. The surgery took a toll on her and her memory is shot. My wife lives with excruciating pain and her quality of life was ruined by Dr Deam. If you see the name Dr Dean, turn and go elsewhere for your own good. read more

I am so sorry I went to Mercy Medical for my back issues because I am still suffering years later. I went to Dr. Clayton who told me I needed the spinal fusion. Before the spinal fusion I had no issues with my right side and my pain wasn't unbearable. I had the surgery and could not use my right side plus my pain was so high oxycodone and lyrica together did not work. I kept calling the office crying and begging for help and his assistant would not let me speak with him or schedule me to come in. It took me 4 months to learn how to write with my right hand again and the only thing he said when I returned for my follow up is he don't know why that happened to me. He said he has performed this surgery thousands of times and never had this issue. My quality of life is terrible now and I so regret letting him do my surgery. read more

Dr. Dean operated on my spine twice at Mercy. (The reasons were unrelated, so it's not like he did anything wrong the first time.) I've very please with the outcome from both experiences and recommend him to everyone. I'll admit that he's not an overly warm and fuzzy sort of guy, so if that's what you're looking for in a surgeon, he may not be for you. However, MY experience is that he listened, he is very straight forward, honest and professional. During my first surgery, he discovered & corrected an issue that wasn't showing up on the x-rays. I'm eternally grateful for that. My experience with the support staff was nothing but excellent and the team at Mercy is amazing. read more

I've had 4 surgeries by Dr. Dean. The first 2 were great. The second 2 were a nightmare. His PAs were horrible, also. His ego has gotten the better of him. Bedside manner has deteriorated to a degree that could warrant litigation. read more

I would not let this clown take a splnter out of my finger after what he did to my back and the way he treated me after surgery, Prior to the surgery he was like a used car salesman to my wife and I saying he sees xrays like mine and looses sleep and he can make things so much better. The only sleep he lost the night before my surgery was in whatever bar he was in putting on the bag he still had on in the morning. The ONE after surgery visit he saw me, I reported the new pain and the old pain that was still the same and his response was "that could be anything" and left the room. If I ever see him I will get out my my wheelchair and punch him. Dont let this asshole operate on you. read more

My daughter recommend Dr. Dean to me, he operated on her and did an amazing job. I had my first back fusion and everything went the way it was suppose to. A year later, I woke up with the most excruciating pain in my lumbar spine area. I couldn't move, couldn't walk...I plain couldn't breathe without being in horrible pain. My daughter finally convinced me to call the dr's office to get an appt after suffering for a week. I was told his PA would call me back because he might want images before coming in. The PA calls, refuses to give me an appt..tells me to lay on a heating pad, take ibuprofen(which I'm allergic to) for a week and if doesn't get any better, to call and make an appt to come it. Long story short, I had a ruptured disc and all the laying on a heating pad wasn't going to help. I had to have another fusion surgery but I suffered unnecessarily because of this PA. Well, I'm in the same situation again. I injured my back over the weekend, I bent over to grab my shoes and bam....I can't move again and the pain is horrible. I call the Dr's office to make an appt to be seen and the same PA refuses to let me make an appt. Tells me the same BS as last time, except this time take 2 muscle relaxers, sit on a heating pad....bye. Ppl don't waste your time with dr, I use to think he was really good. His ego has gotten over inflated and he doesn't care about his patients anymore. He certainly doesn't care how his staff treats patients either. read more

I wish I could go back in time and not let this man anywhere near me. I came to him with back pain and he scheduled spinal fusion surgery at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. After the surgery I woke up numb below the waist and in my feet. This was a very routine surgery, and so the nurses and Dr. Dean seemed confused about my symptoms. I had difficulty walking and at my 1 month post operative checkup I was reprimanded by Dr. Dean, who said, "all these other folks are here for their one month check up and they are walking fine! Why are you in a wheelchair?" I was near tears, and still couldn't feel my feet and anything in my groin area. These post surgical symptoms have never subsided, and it is now one and a half years since the surgery. When I talked to Dr. Dean at 6 months post surgery he had no idea what had happened to me. He says he does thousands of these surgeries, and yet he is clueless. I spoke with a more senior doctor at his practice who told me nerve damage could take up to a year and a half to heal and explained a little better what likely happened. He says the nerves are moved aside for surgery and sometimes they don't decompress if they're injured. Dr. Dean would never admit that he may have done something wrong during surgery, something that squeezed the nerves coming off L5-S1. My life has changed in so many ways since the surgery. I have terrible pain when I sit. I had to leave my job because I can't sit for more than a few moments at a time. I don't go out to dinner or to movies anymore. I don't ride a bicycle. I have trouble walking because the nerve damage affected the right side of my right foot. This surgery aged me dramatically, and Dr. Dean did not display an ounce of knowledge or sympathy. It was like talking to someone deep in denial. There are hundreds of spine and orthopeadic surgeons or neurosurgeons out there to do this kind of surgery. Please pick another. Mercy Hospital staff was horrible to me the 3 or 4 days I was there, not believing that I couldn't stand up and leaving me shaking and freezing in the basement waiting to get xrays. I would stay away from this doctor and this hospital at all costs. It is like the LIttle Hospital of Horrors!!!! read more
