When I spoke with Anita, she took the time to explain everything in detail and made the decision to sign up for the hand-building class really easy. I ended up deciding to join my wife, and I'm so glad I did! We had a wonderful time, learned a new art, and created several really cool pieces in just four sessions that we were able to take home. Anita was incredibly professional, patient, and supportive throughout the classes. She created such a peaceful and welcoming environment, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. This past Saturday I had a Sewing class, signed up through Renaissance Club. The reason I was…read moreexcited for the class is that I have a wrist issue and it's hard to use my fingers, so sewing by hand is getting cumbersome to fix things and I was excited to learn how to use a sewing machine. On arrival I parked on the street which is 2 hour street parking and walked up to the door, only 5 minutes before 4pm which was the start of the class and I rang the doorbell. I was greeted at the door by someone who said I have to wait outside and they will unlock the door at 4pm. I thought this was strange but I said ok and went to wait in my car because it's so hot and humid outside I did not want to just stand outside. At 1 minute to 4 I got back out of my car and saw people were already inside and the door was once again locked so I had to ring the doorbell again. I personally feel this door lock policy is strange, but perhaps the area isn't safe so maybe they are protecting themselves from anybody just walking in but it feels impersonable. Upon entering I was directed immediately to wash my hands, as was everyone else, which is a good policy I like it that they want everyone to have clean hands before beginning. Our class of 4 was going to learn how to make a pillow. We were asked to choose 5 pieces of cloth so I of course got excited when I saw sparkly ones and got all the ones that had sparkles and then the 5th didn't because there were no other variations with sparkles. Then we sat in front of the sewing machine and I remember feeling so overwhelmed looking at it that I couldn't imagine that I'm going to be able to learn. Well, if you feel like me, then have no fear, because the instructor was kind and thorough. She goes through the process twice while you watch, and the third time you do it yourself and then she has you repeat it 3 times to get muscle memory. This was quite effective and I got it fast, and now a few days later I was talking to a friend and I was able to verbalize to her what the steps were so I remember! First we did some practice stitches on some scraps, and then we got to sewing our cloth! For a few minutes I had a feeling like maybe my cloth will not look good together why did I choose these, but after they were sewn together it suddenly transformed into something that was meant to be. Despite different designs and colors, it just flows. After those 5 scraps are sewn together to make a square or rectangle, then you get to choose a larger cloth to use as the back of the pillow. After we sewed the whole pillow except for the hole to add stuffing, we then could stuff our pillows with as much filling as we want. Some want thicker pillows some like them softer. I have a thing where I hate when the corners of my pillows aren't all filled with stuffing, so I was horrified when right before sewing the rest of the pillow shut all my hard work to get all 4 corners perfectly filled with stuffing were removed because they pulled all the stuffing downwards to empty the top to sew the hole and then they shook it out to refluff the stuffing. But now that the pillow was sewn shut, I could no longer reach in to make the perfect corners. If I may give some advice, I think that pushing it down so drastically was too much, we could have still easily sewn that hole shut if we only pushed down the middle stuffing and left the corners stuffed in my opinion. I still until now keep fidgeting with it to try to get the corners filled back in the way I had it but what I may end up having to do is cut open the hole again to fix it and then reclose it. Overall an extremely fun class. I never thought I would have so much fun and a feeling of gratification after using a sewing machine. The stitches come out so beautifully perfect and so fast. I do hope to take some of the other classes, the 2nd class in the series would be to make a reversible bag, the 3rd class is pajama pants, and the 4th class in the series is a little kit bag. I really do want to take these classes especially the pajamas class. I love that they measured us in anticipation for the future so we know how much material we will need to make our pants.

As someone new to pottery who lives nearby, The Pottery Studio has been a great resource. I was never interested in pottery because I have a lot of hobbies and didn't want to add another, but my neighbor asked if I'd be interested and I decided to join her. We have taken three classes so far. The ability to reschedule a class is really helpful when I had a conflict for a regular class session. Emailing to get a makeup class was totally easy and very friendly. All of their policies are clearly spelled-out when you sign up. The only real gap is not receiving an email reminder for a new class with the door code. It hasn't been a problem for me, but with all the missing folks I've noticed on the first day of class, this seems like something that could be automated at low to no cost (and add to their calendars) to get students to the studio on-time. There have been some long waits for kiln times. I have some greenware that sat on the shelf from week two - week four of my hand building class. If I weren't signed up for another class, I would have to ask for access to get my work and hope it would be ok to glaze them. A lot of bisque ware gets abandoned, which is a bummer. I wonder if that is partially the cause or if the journey is the destination for many folks. We love taking classes with Michelle. And we have had make up classes with Laura and Angelica. We have watched Skyler be really helpful and patient with students and members. The ability to come in during non-class times is great. Unlimited access to class clay is fantastic. I wish people cleaned up after themselves and followed the signage more, because I find myself cleaning up after others a lot, but that's what you get in a community environment. I've interacted with a few members who are very open to sharing knowledge. Many other members are working ceramicists and are clearly locked-in, so I try to stay out of their way. Seeing so much of their beautiful work is inspiring. Parking is usually fine, but I am glad I don't live on that street because I do see how it could be annoying. I would be aware of it before I moved in because there is a big sign painted on the sign of this building. It's not stealth or secret. The person in the other review who was recently complaining must be new to the neighborhood because this studio has been open for quite a long time and, while maybe some folks can be described as entitled or whatever, most of the members and students I've encountered are very nice, considerate, and a very diverse group of people. As for the comments about Marshall. I haven't met him, but I did hear his interactions with some staff and realized that he must be the owner (then looked him up to confirm). While not bombastic, his tone didn't sound great when directed at the kiln loader. It was definitely a "yes, Chef" presence. But I've only seen/heard him once in over three months, so it has been a non-issue for me. From a student perspective, if you read the policies and agree to them, there should not be any reason to interact with Marshall. Once class starts, your space is taken and they can't resell it to someone else. I mean, it's pretty obvious why moving you to another month or splitting months doesn't make sense.

It's so gritty and makes everything come out in varying shades of brown, no matter what glaze you use (perhaps the glaze isn't amazing either, I'm not sure). I'm concerned about the management or owner - they can't seem to retain good teachers long term, and that is a bad sign to me. I've heard from classmates & members that the owner has a very unkind and aggressive management style. If what I've heard is true, I'd hesitate to continue to support this business.

21/100 I didn't know…read morewhat to expect when walking into the Animation Academy, but after a half hour lesson in how to draw a Disney character, I walked out with a pretty good rendition of Tigger drawn by my own, two little hands. I'm not an artist, but the instructor made drawing so easy that anyone can do it. They take you through step by step, using basic shapes and strokes like triangles and circles, and make it all so easy. I can't wait to go back again to see who I get to draw next.

I came across this place on my most recent visit to Disneyland/California Adventure over Thanksgiving break. Since the lines for all the rides were horrendous, my boyfriend and I tried some new things in the parks that were not rides. The Animation Academy was the highlight of the trip. There are "shows" every half hour where you sit inside a mini lecture hall and learn to draw Disney characters. There is a Disney animator who walks you through each step so that you come out with a picture that actually looks pretty good! Things move pretty fast so make sure you keep up with the animator and pay attention. Things can go from simple circles to eyelashes really quickly so here are a few things to keep in mind so that you don't seem so flustered during your first visit to the Academy. 1. Get there at least 10 minutes early so that you are guaranteed a seat. People start to line up. 2. When you choose your row, move down all the way to the end of the row and don't leave spaces between you and the next party. They don't have cooties. But most of all, don't be annoying and stop in the middle so that people have to climb over you. You can see everything from the right or left sides, trust me. 3. Follow along with the animator and don't freak if you make a mistake. Erasers are not allowed. If you come to the Animation Academy and follow along, you will honestly surprise yourself with what you can create! We went three times and drew Tigger, Mickey, and Dale. You can ask the guy at the front to see which characters are coming up so that you can plan your visits around their lesson plans! It is basically a free drawing lesson that can be just as fun for adults as it is for the kids. Actually maybe even more fun for adults.
