A $45 precon I could have ordered online or target, but instead payed $80 for, and $50 for a card that "went really well with it" Both were the first he recommended and I should have known better. Tried to support local and got taken advantage of. Don't go. Research what you want first, and order on Manapool or TCGPlayer for your Magic products like I should have done in the first place.

As newer collectors, a simple greeting or a bit of guidance would have really helped, especially in a shop with so many boxes of cards to go through. That said, there are a lot of positives. The store is clean, well organized, and offers an impressive selection across sports, Pokémon, and several other categories. Their prices were very fair (definitely more reasonable than some other shops we've visited) which we really appreciated. While the lack of customer engagement made the visit feel a bit underwhelming, the quality of the shop itself is strong enough that I can see myself returning. Artie and Shannon(so sorry if i butchered the spelling) were absolutely amazing and went above and beyond to help me get everything I needed. They helped me put together the whole setup--from the GameCube and controller to the necessary cables, memory card, power equipment, and even making sure I had the right solution to get the console working with a modern TV. Most importantly, they answered every single question I had and made sure I wasn't walking out with something missing that I'd need later. What really stood out to me, though, was how welcoming they were. Both my wife and I felt genuinely comfortable in the store, and Artie and Shannon were an immense source of information. They never made us feel like we were asking too many questions or like we were being rushed. They seemed genuinely excited to help us get back into gaming and relive some of that childhood nostalgia. I walked out of Gateway Games with everything I needed to finally sit down and play a game that means a lot to me, and honestly, that's an experience I'll remember. During an apparent routine inspection of everything I had to trade in which took 48 hours, an insane amount of time considering no other business has ever made me leave my stuff there and were just always able to at least perform basic testing to even be an employee there, they determined over half of my mostly in shape box useless because of MINOR defects they should ABSOLUTELY be able to fix themselves, ESPECIALLY the manager. Oh, and to add, they had my PS Vita in good condition that wasn't booting but had no other issues for 5 dollars hahaha, he actually claimed a 3DS Link Ocarina of Time edition I had was worth $5 with a broken screen, too, and the price for it BROKEN on a basic google search is near $300. I can do the repairs better than this place just with my education and minimal engineering experience and a Youtube video at this point, and that is sad. Their repair services are just an absolute joke. They do not do any real repairs, they do repairs everyone else could do EASILY at home for a LOT less. The value is just absolutely terrible on businesses like this and this one is no exception and this absolute shameless manager is no exception. The offer I got for the minimal amount of my modest box of things was also garbage. It was average at best for a gaming store and realistically pretty terrible for any other offer. I wanted some convenient money today for some errands but I really wasn't happy about anything that was happening and was nothing but honest and patient. It's possible I missed them, but from what I could tell, singles weren't readily available. The biggest concern for me was the pricing. As a newer collector, I was already a bit nervous about choosing the right boxes, and seeing some items marked significantly higher than retail made me hesitant to buy. For example, the most recent Topps NBA Holiday Box was priced at $60, even though we had just purchased the same box at GameStop for $35 and it's still widely available at that price. Since it doesn't seem to be a rare or hard-to-find product, the markup felt a little excessive. On the positive side, the customer service was genuinely great. The employee who helped us took the time to talk with us and seemed truly willing to assist with anything we needed. That part of the experience definitely stood out in a good way. Overall, while I appreciated the variety and the friendly service, the pricing made me hesitant to spend money during this visit. I may do a bit more research and give the shop another try in the future, but based on this first impression, I wasn't fully comfortable making a purchase yet.

Several years later, he moved to downtown Novato which is the last location that I visited. A few years ago and after the world changed in March 2020, he found a larger space here and made the move. He carries a full variety of sports cards and memorabilia as well as hosting games on weekends for Magic and Pokemon fans. He also carries card collecting supplies such as sheets, binders, and cases to frame jerseys. I've been fortunate that we are also casual friends so when I am looking for something, he will look for it or source me to where I can get it. With the recent Giants' outfielder from Asia doing a signing event then cancelling it last month, I asked him to help me get two autographed baseballs, one for a friend and the other for me. He's helped me frame jerseys and I've bought cardholders, sheets, and random sports items to give as gifts for friends. I hope to visit their store, likely when I make a road trip to the North Bay.
