Flying high! Aerial photo of my red roof house!
    Linda S.

My father got to copilot the red biplane as a Christmas present and loved it. It was on my bucket list, as I live near Bowman Field and love seeing it fly overhead. I wanted to get some aerial photos of our new house with azaleas in bloom, so I contacted Steve to arrange a tour. I've known Steve since childhood, he runs a great service here and also does amazing work flying to Haiti as a volunteer with Agape Flights. He is knowledgeable about all things Louisville and aviation. He installed a new still camera on the wing; I got some amazing shots! If you are terrified of heights, maybe it's not for you, but it was smooth as silk, not scary and the feeling was amazing! I don't want to be corny with adjectives here, but it truly was a one of a kind lifetime experience! I didn't want to land. This would be a great gift for someone, even a great place to propose!

In-flight pics by the pilot. Worth the $$.

This was the best idea ever! Every time I think about this plane ride (including now), I get the biggest smile on my face. I bought the 30 minute ride (~$300) as a wedding gift to my husband and it was the most fun and adventurous thing we'd done in a long time. Definitely pay the extra $40 for in-flight photos and video taken by the pilot - they're awesome and worth it. You can also take your own pics and video, but be careful or the wind will take down your phone (my husband felt his phone slipping away). Ladies, your hair will be a tangled, hot mess from the wind so put it in a ponytail holder. When we did our flight Thanksgiving weekend the temp was in the 40s and we were plenty warm with our coats on. I never quite got the hang of talking over the headsets but practice a little and you'll get it down. I was doing it wrong. Would definitely recommend! It's so much fun and the pilot/plane owner is nice and easy to work with.

LeeB and I took the Classic Biplane Tour last August for my birthday present!! We had an excellent time! The staff were fun to speak with and very knowledgeable. We were given plenty of time around the plane to take lots of pictures of each other with the shiny red biplane. The tour we took was around Louisville. LeeB, being our family photographer, was settled in the seat with the best views and he brought home memories that we constantly view on our Chomecasted TV. We went over the Ohio River, downtown, and over our new little St. Matthews neighborhood. I could point out the Saint Matthews Garden!! It is definitely a "must do" in Louisville, especially if you live here!

Such a great adventure! Steve (our pilot) was wonderful. Our takeoff and landing were so smooth you could tell he was very experienced. So much fun! I'd love to do it again sometime.

What you get when you bottle your own is definitely one of a kind, they were pouring the first Elijah Craig rye while I was there. Also, this place is beautiful and you have to visit the bar upstairs after your tour. Completely worth it. However, the bourbon bubble is over for now. Less people drinking and willing to pay secondary prices. Furthermore, a lot of us have gotten pretty smart watching YouTube and reading about this amazing brown elixir. So, the 51% corn and new oak barrel stuff can probably be dropped, but tell me what is special about my choices. I also asked our friendly tour guy if HH was bringing back the 12 year age statement on the Elijah Craig and he responded 12 years? (A few years ago EC dropped the age statement, because bourbon was being sold so fast, they had difficulty obtain older bourbon for this brand). My point is be unique, tell me something that we don't know, what is HH doing to deal with the change in the bourbon trend, what is the new thing in bourbon. Take a tour of Wild Turkey Russel Reserve tour, they did it right.

At times during the tour, I felt like I was in a seance, as she called out to "sweet spirits" and asked that they turn off the lights and such. I consider myself pretty open, but this was not what I was expecting. Patty and one teenage girl along on the tour too, brought ghost meters, which "picked up" several during the tour. The teenage girl and her parents were into it, but it just wasn't my thing. Reservation is done via phone. I tried several days to book the tour, the voice mail was full, but finally was able to get an answer the day before the trek. She said that sometimes there are large parties that show up and completely fill up the tour. So I went ahead and pre-booked our spots, which were $15 each. The tour started at Old Talbot Tavern at 8pm. I was surprised to walk up and see maybe 40ish people already there to take the trek too, so it's popular. It didn't appear that anyone was turned down though. We started outside and Patty talked a bit about her past and how she used to manage Old Talbot Tavern. Then we went in the tavern, and the upstairs Jesse James room. I had already been in there, and it's spooky up there, even in the daylight. That's where she started talking and trying to get the ghosts to respond. The amount of people on the tour was so large, that a few people were out in the hallway area. From there, we went into an upstairs room/conference like are where we were able to sit down while she dimmed the lights and summoned the ghost to turn out the light and communicate. The next stop was out in front of Jailers Inn and by that time, even though there was one more stop, we had enough and cut out early.

For future readers, you'll recall that the spring of 2021 was a crazy time, coming off all the COVID lockdowns. Many distillers, who hadn't been open for tours for many months, were finally opening their doors, and demand for tours and tastings far exceeded availability. Tommy apparently has a few connections, and was able to get us the Connoisseur's Tasting at Heaven Hill, and the full tour and tasting at Maker's Mark. The experience was great: The van was large and comfortable, and Tommy--locally raised--knows the area, it's history, and plenty about the distilleries. In addition to the planned stops, he also made an unscheduled stop at the tiny Limestone Branch Distillery so we could taste some craft cocktails and buy some souvenirs. Bottom line: If you love bourbon, and you're looking for a relaxing, enjoyable, and memorable afternoon in the heart of bourbon country, you will not go wrong with Tommy and CopperTop Tours.

The second most expensive was the Mizunara whiskey from Boundary Oak, a $250 bottle. It's made with staves from a rare Japanese tree, that has to be at least 200 years old before it can be used. It truly imparts a one-of-a-kind flavor. This was included in the premium package, which lets you try some terrific and 'fancy' stuff for $30. You also get an etched glass to take home. Gerry was a great tasting guide! He was very knowledgeable about the products, and how they may be best enjoyed, including a whiskey that needed to sit for a bit to open up. I also want to give some extra credit, as when I asked about their "Sinful 69" bottle, he poured a little sample for me, and called over the other folks who were doing the tasting to try it also. Alas, I did not have an opportunity this time around to see the inner workings of distillation, but as I understand it, this is more an explanation that tour through the production area.
