I'm mixed and have had a hard time in the past finding stylists that knew how to cut my hair without leading to a total disaster (I once walked out a salon with my hair one inch shorter than the other side, and no I wasn't going for an asymmetrical look). I had finally found someone I loved a few years ago, and then of course I had to move away. I LOVE my hair shorter and took years to find the perfect cut to frame my face. I have had a lot of stylists that were hesitant to cut my hair as short as I was asking for or missed the mark as far as the shape of the cut was concerned. Nicole really listened. She looked at every picture, confirmed what I wanted, and even went back and cut more at my request. She was great from start to finish, had reasonable prices, and I will definitely go back to her in the future when I need a trim. Her styling was great, and she cut my side bangs perfectly, which is rare (I don't think even my last greatly loved stylist was able to do it in a way that it curls towards the back of my hair and blends in the way I like it to). The styling was included with the cut, which was really nice. I will have to see how the cut looks with my natural hair the next time I wash it, but I have no reason to doubt that it'll be just fine.

Had I been told that upfront, I could have made an informed decision before coming in. When I arrived, I was initially greeted by another employee. During our conversation, an older woman named Maria suddenly jumped in and reached toward my hair without even asking. I instinctively moved away because I was already engaged in another conversation and did not appreciate someone reaching for my hair without permission. I then asked who I had spoken with on the phone the day before, and Maria said it was her. Since I assumed I was in good hands because we had already spoken, I decided to let her do my hair. Unfortunately, the service itself was extremely disappointing. While washing my hair, Maria appeared frustrated and barely washed my scalp. I honestly felt that my hair and scalp were not properly cleansed. She then began pulling and aggressively handling my hair. My hair was not matted, nor was it extremely difficult to manage, so the excessive pulling felt unnecessary and uncomfortable. The technique was simply not what I expected from a professional stylist. I was then placed under a dryer, and I did not see any heat protectant being applied before my hair was blow-dried. Eventually, Maria handed me off to a much younger stylist, who completed my hair. Then came the biggest issue: when it was time to pay, Maria charged me $60 instead of the $40 I had been quoted over the phone. I questioned the price, and she explained that I had "a lot of hair" and that she didn't know that when she quoted me. My issue is that she was the person I spoke with on the phone. She had the opportunity to ask about my hair length or explain that the price could change based on length or volume, but she did neither. I ultimately paid the $60 because I did not want to argue, but I made it clear that I would not be returning. On top of everything else, the salon itself appeared run-down, and I was concerned about the cleanliness and sanitation practices I observed. For a salon where customers are trusting you with their hair and personal hygiene, cleanliness should be a priority. This experience was disappointing from beginning to end. If the price is going to depend on hair length or volume, that information needs to be communicated BEFORE the service--not after the service has already been completed. Customers deserve transparency, professionalism, proper hair-care techniques, and a clean environment. Unfortunately, I will not be returning.
