I recently visited my sister and we stopped by the local farmers market, one of her favorite spots--especially for the popcorn. On our way home, she decided to grab a bag and went with a large with butter. While it was being filled, I noticed it was double the price of a medium, which we unfortunately didn't realize before ordering. The large came out to $17, which felt steep considering their massive party bag is only $20. While the party bag isn't warm and fresh, it definitely offers more bang for your buck. That said, the popcorn itself was delicious--no complaints on taste or quality. Next time, I'd definitely go for a small or medium size. Good selection of popcorn, fresh popped all, my favorite is their caramel corn. I'll break my diabetic diet once a week to cheat, this is the cheat for the week in Madison. They also have bags of good corn for popping at home, and the service is prompt and friendly. Very close to the Madison Concourse Hotel. friend from madison once brought back a bag of caramel corn for me. it was sweet, but addicting at the same time. then every time she went back i asked her to get me a "village size". this time i went for myself, she brought me to the place so i could get as much as i liked. and it changed everything. first off, they had many different kinds of flavors, and all at a sudden, i couldn't decide. i wished they would give samples, but either they don't do that in general, or they didn't offer it to me. the man behind the counter wasn't that friendly to begin with. we were standing in front of the racks for MINUTES, and never for once he cared enough to greet us or asked if we needed help. but he seemed quite annoyed that we stood there for so long, undecided, as there were a couple other customers who would just walk in, grab their bag, and go. sorry i'm being a tourist. for that reason, i only got a couple of bags as "souvenirs", and that was my last time there. when i got home, i still opened the bag with anticipation, having had good memories from the past. but for some reason, they just weren't as crunchy and "aromous" as i last had it. oh well. not a loss. read more

I used to work on State Street and would have loved to get a little bag of popcorn for my bus ride home, but every time I went down to Clary's it was never open - didn't matter what time of day, what day, or the weather. Hours weren't posted, and sometimes the sign said open but there was a note saying be back in 5 minutes....I would wait, and eventually have to leave to get my bus. When we could get in I would rave to the owner about his popcorn, and he was generally disinterested. I finally moved my popcorn urge on down the road to Vic's, where they're not only open for business, but also give free samples. read more

Oh Clary's! For only $.99....I can get a me-sized "sampler" bag of popcorn. My favorite is the lite oil/salt.....it's perfect...and healthy. There are always samples of popcorn to try, so I make sure to sneak a handful of the kettle corn and cinnamon popcorn. The thing that makes this place truly exceptional is the owner himself. He always has a genuine smile for me and know exactly what I am going to order as soon as i walked in. Bought 3 bags of pop corn (2 flavored, one kettle) and a bag of corn to pop. The flavored ones taste like candy, which is Ok because that's what the kids wanted. The large bag of kettle corn was contaminated with something. It tasted like cleaner, or detergent. Maybe the equipment they used to make it was washed and not rinsed properly. We really wanted to like this corn so we tested from different parts of the bag. The kernels had varying degrees of residue but they all had it. read more

Walking along state street on a beautiful sunny(and unseasonably warm) Wednesday, I had the pleasure of deciding between Vics and Clarys popcorn. I read the reviews and decided to try Clary's . Immediately upon entering, you could tell what set Clary's apart was the staff. Offering samples and delivering a surprisingly fresh product, the man behind the counter went above and beyond my expectations of this little popcorn shop on State St. I decided to go with butter, a little brewers yeast, and a spicy chili style seasoning. With a pop, candy for my son and a small tip I was out the door spending only $5! I would recommend Clary's to everyone.. It takes me back to making popcorn with my mom and dad as a little kid. read more

For years when living in Madison, I went to Clary's at every opportunity. Which is better, the ungodly caramel corn or the amazing kettle corn? The balance of the flavors in each is just perfect. On a recent visit to a friend's in Portland, I secretly brought some Clary's, and bought some no-name caramel corn as I got off the plane. At the baggage claim I broke out the crummy stuff. My buddy saw me eating caramel corn, smiled big, and grabbed the bag from me and ate a huge handful. Then his face fell. He said "It's pretty good. But it's not Clary's." Now that I'm out of Madison, I think about Clary's nearly every day. How good is it? It can't be shipped to here in Canada, so I am having a can sent to my mother-in-law's house in North Carolina, to be waiting when we visit next month. It was 2013 Taste of Madison, hot out and we bought a few sodas and a few different kinds of popcorn. while we were waiting for our popcorn my daughter and I both opened our sodas and they tasted flat and terrible. We looked t the expiration date it was outdated by several months. We told the owner and he said very snotty " well, don't buy them then" never offered to look in the cooler for non outdated sodas, no apology, nothing!
