I first took my car to Auto-Lab in Belleville. The person at the front desk was very professional and friendly. My issue with my car was that it was overheating. After Auto-Lab reviewed my issue, they stated that they needed to perform a pressure test that would cost approximately $1050. From there they then stated they could determine the root cause. I stated to them that they wanted me to spend $1050 to possibly determine that a $30 hose may be at the root cause. I informed them that I would be picking up my car shortly. I then proceeded to take my car to Clark's Car Care in Romulus. I did so as they have had such great reviews. After about 30 seconds to looking at the car, it was determined that all I needed to do was replace a $40 part. The total bill came to $200. Clark's Car Care now has a customer for life. Didn't need it. We thought she needed all three motor mounts replaced, only needed two replaced. They could have done the work, and we'd be none the wiser. Friends, let me tell you about my day yesterday. I had a 1:15 hip injection in Port Huron. I had to be at the Detroit airport around 3-3:30. I had to be back in Port Huron at 5:45 for a softball game. A bit ambitious, but doable. Somewhere between PoHo and DTW, my van started making a weird clunking noise. I kind of shrugged it off until we got to Hall Rd and stopped for food/coffee. I rolled down my window to order, and I could tell the caliper on one side was seized/something was seriously wrong. Relevant side note, it DID just get new brakes (pads, rotors, calipers) and shocks/struts a few days ago. So by this time we are already pushing it on time and I am not sure what to do. I call my dear sweet husband, who is 1.5 hours north and can't do anything besides calm me down, lol. We look at our options, which are uber'ing my daughter and grandkitty the remaining 60 miles to the airport, or renting a car and finding a repair shop that will look at my van immediately. Y'all I can't find a repair shop at all. They all politely decline, as it's so close to the end of the day and they don't do last minute repairs. I called at least a dozen in the Hall Rd area. So I make the poor decision to keep driving. I *know* I am making a bad choice, but I also know I have to get my daughter to the airport. It keeps clunking, but it sounds a little better... until we hit a traffic jam 5 miles from the airport. At this point it is sounding gnarly, and I know we are not going to make it home safely. But I do make it to the airport so she can get on her plane. At this point I am sitting in the drop off lane, starting to break down. It's hard enough sending my kid back to Oregon, but everything was just too much. To top it off, the person in front of me had some serious road rage and almost backed into me intentionally. We are saying goodbye when my phone rings, and y'all it is a freaking angel on the other line by the name of Doug from Clarks Car Care. I explain my predicament, he agrees that it doesn't sound safe to make the 2 hour trip back home. He said he was just getting ready to leave, but if I could head to his shop right away he would stay to help. He jumps in to take it for a short test drive and makes it 20 feet before stopping and putting it onto the lift, lol. He immediately spots the issue, I had lost a bolt on my braking system which was making my caliper flop around, causing all of the issues. Because I had lost that bolt, the others were starting to loosen up as well. So he sends his wife off to the store to get a replacement bolt while he tightened everything up for me. He had my car fixed in time for us to safely get to softball just 11 minutes late, which was perfect time for my youngest to take her place in the lineup and make her first run!! I stopped in at Clark's needing a quick fix to my car. When I got there, Doug came right out to take a look even though he was working on another vehicle. He spent about 10 minutes to make the repair. He looked the car over to make sure it was good to drive and sent me on my way. When I asked, "how much"? He just said, "have a better day!". I have never written a review before but this is well deserved. My car was towed to Clark's Car Care after losing power on the highway -- I was alone and female. The tow truck driver Mike from Williams & Son reassured me that this was the place to go. Mike told me there was no reason to be taken advantage of just because I was in a desperate situation. Mike was amazing and so was Clark's Car Care. At first Doug, the owner of Clark's, said he would not be able to get to me immediately but in the end told me to have my car towed to his shop. He assured me if he could not help me he would push my car four blocks to the other mechanic in town. Doug and his employee were amazing. They stopped what they were doing, inspected my car, and immediately identified the problem -- timing belt. He offered up honest advice. He made at least 7 calls for me to other shops for repair pricing, to the scrap yard, to car dealerships to find me a used car. And being alone and female out of state I felt totally safe. He made my decision to scrap my car easy and even gave me the cash advance so I didn't have to come back for the cash. He made all the calls on speaker phone so I could hear the exact conversations he was having about my car. As I made myself at home in his garage, until my husband could get me, I saw many people come and go. He treated them all the same with respect and a willingness to problem solve. Hard working man. If only I lived closer he would be the only place I would take my car for repairs. He helped me asking nothing in return.
