I wish I had read these reviews before we had Ed Clark do our taxes. We had been referred to him by another CPA. Our taxes were simpler for last year than they had been for recent years. Yet, Ed charged us more than twice what we had paid our former CPA for the 3 previous years. OK. We paid it with no complaint. Almost 2 months later, we receive an exact duplicate of the IRS filing he had sent previously. It included another bill for over $1,000 more. He would not give me ANY detail or reasoning behind the sudden additional bill. If fact, he said he would no longer return any emails to me and that I should just, "pay the bill and move on". In the body of his email he was sarcastic and unprofessional. We had other issues with him prior to this. For example, he did not reply to previous emails we had sent, claiming he never received them. But, when I got on the phone with him and sent an email he received it immediately. Really? Our experience is similar to other of the complaints in this Yelp review section. They seem to be about Ed, more than anyone else in the firm. read more

This firm (Tony specifically) filed our taxes improperly resulting in unnecessary and significant cost to us. He refused to take any responsibility and blamed us for his own mistakes and his poor understanding of our taxes. This forced us to pay an attorney and a qualified CPA at a different firm to review and correct any further mistakes and omissions he may have made. Note the other reviews here and elsewhere where this firm made basic mistakes that no CPA firm should ever make. We have filed a compliant with the attorney general's office. As there is clearly a pattern here I hope others file as well so that this business can correct its mistakes and avoid causing issue to others. read more

I think the general review of how good a CPA is varies depending on people's needs. I work with Ed all the time. Good service for me is being an absolute expert in helping me navigate some pretty complex tax code. When I read other people complaining about this firms fees, I agree I've seen cheaper but some people really need an expert and the extra cost saves us much more. I've built entire plans around the advice Ed's given me that has saved me thousands of dollars and I couldn't be more grateful for his advice. read more

tl;dr - the right client for this firm is someone who, even before an initial meeting, gives them a blank check to bill as many hours as they see fit, at $325 per hour, before even deciding to use their services. Given the mixed reviews here, I had some reservations but wanted to give them a try, as they came recommended from CPAs and attorneys. I didn't even get to an appointment with Ed Clark. They told me they needed to review my information prior to an initial consultation, and this review would be billed at their regular rate. Totally fair. But since I didn't know if we were a good fit, I asked for a short introductory meeting just to understand if they were a good fit (again, happy to pay the rate). No can do. Fine, but given the other reviews on here, I wanted to get an estimate of how many hours the review would be. For years this company served me well. Then they made a mistake on a Washington estate tax return and over $8,500 in additional taxes had to be paid 2 years after filing. Even though it was clearly their mistake, they would not pay the interest due to their error. UPDATE 8/21/17: David Baumgart was quite helpful in addressing and following up on further issues with this return. He was very professional and accommodating in helping to resolve the additional issues. read more

I was a client of Ed Clark's for over a dozen years. Most of those years I had a positive experience, and in fairness to Ed, I had trouble at times getting him information in a timely manner, but then there were years where I had everything to him for tax season by the third week of January, so all-in-all, I was a better than average client in terms of preparedness. When I gave Ed the word that I was thinking of selling my insurance business, his interest in helping me waned. I was delegated to a junior accountant who was capable enough, but here's where I have a real problem with Ed: 1) Despite my continued requests for an itemization of his bills, I never got one. 2) He charges 1/4 hour to respond to an email, which usually was a sentence or part of a sentence at best. 3) This last year, Ed's junior associate informed me that I owed over $64,000 to the IRS. My new CPA was able to turn that deficit into a $4,000 refund. Despite my reasonable entreaties to get a little time and attention from Ed, he kept putting me off. First it was understandable because he took a well-deserved vacation after tax season. Then, upon returning, he told me he wouldn't get to it until the end of June. Then, it was the end of July at the earliest. He stonewalled, became beligerent and in the end, was so rude to me, it was all I could do to not file a formal grievance against him. Be careful -- Ed has a viscious mean streak and there's not an ounce of compassion in that man. I can honestly say that, after having a few years of my tax returns re-evaluated by a highly competent CPA, who, btw, charged me much less than Clark Raymond, I cannot recommend this firm in good conscience. I had a terrible experience with this firm. I strongly recommend not using this firm at all. I'm a salaried employee and my tax return should be straight forward.I went to these guys, even though they were costly, because I wanted peace of mind. I found multiple, BIG errors in their filing and I had to spend hours combing through the tax returns to make sure if they had not made any other mistakes. -- On top of it, instead of being sympathetic- they offered me a small $ and were extremely rude ( Ed) and unprofessional. read more

Incompetent accountants and incredibly unprofessional manner. We asked if we could speak with Ed Clark as we have always had an actual conversation with our tax preparer once the organizer process is complete (or we could all just use TurboTax) and we received a scathingly rude note from Ed and he told us not to contact him again. Then, after we were forced to hire another tax accountant to actually do the work, he had the gall to bill us! And finally, amount he says we owed was 3x what a thorough accountant determined. I used this company a while back to try to simplify getting my taxes done. My taxes are somewhat complicated as I am a business owner, have a nanny, etc. I have done my taxes myself for years. I submitted all my tax docs and the taxes I had prepared for review to this company and asked if there were things I could do differently. They sent me a bill for $300. When I spoke with the advisor, he told me there was nothing I could do differently. But, when I asked probing questions, it was clear he knew nothing about my tax situation - he knew nothing about my employer/business, nothing about the household. I don't believe he even reviewed my tax docs based on that exchange. He tried to get off the phone as quickly as possible then sent me a bill. I refused to pay it. I would not use this company - I think they billed me for work never performed. read more

We had an experience working with a member of this firm. In my opinion, they handled our business in a very unprofessional manner. At the end of the work, which I think was unofficial and poorly documented, we were charged for an amount that we felt was not representative of the actual work that was done.
