I recently visited family and friends in Redcar for ten days over Easter 2011 and had the pleasure of staying at the Clarendon hotel. I have to say initially I had my reservations as I was told that it was not that great, the beer was pants, rooms were not clean etc but omg.... it was fantastic! I was informed during my stay by the bar staff that the previous management had gone (with who The Clarendon had gained its unsavoury and dire reputation!) and had been taken over almost a year ago by a fantastic and hardworking husband and wife team. The regular bar flies told me long gone was the naff beer (and I have to agree that after a night out in Redcar it was one of the best pints in the town!), the decor had been upgraded throughout and was a lot nicer and homely than previous and that a full revamp had been done to the function room / breakfast room. The hotel rooms while basic are great value for money, clean and comfortable and very reasonably priced for what you get! A single room including either a extremely filling breakfast or fresh home cooked evening meal for £30 per night in the centre of town! Bargain!!! The food was excellent and again reasonably priced compared with other restaurants and establishments in the town; the steak pie is a must for all meat and pastry lovers and also they did a very tasty 'parmo' (a must for any smoggy returing home), in fact all the food I had was great, nothing whatsoever was 'micro-mealed' or the likes! The staff were always helpful and polite (and welcoming!) and no request I had was a problem! I would highly recommend the Clarendon to my friends and colleagues and have already booked in for a week in July for when I'm visiting again! Well done and many thanks to the new owners (Russ and Sarah) for a most wonderful stay! read more
