It is no longer a heavy drinking pub but is getting good reviews for the Chinese restuarant part (which is being refurnished) The resturant is why I decided to give this place another try and I did enjoy it. The new buffet style is good and the food is very good and worth having.It is now a lot brighter and cleaner and certainly more inviting. My only complaint is that it seemed take away customers seemed to be getting priority over the eat in customers

This building is one of the oldest surviving in Stockton with a stone clad front from the castle. It has a great yard at the back called, of course, Green Dragon Yard, which is essentially a passageway linking several other areas and the Georgian Theatre, where bands perform. The dragon is a Sam Smiths pub so the beer is cheap and quite good quality, and you can spend many an hour here getting a bit merry, if you can avoid all the rough types who enjoy making comments. Bless them. Fact: has a genuine smugglers tunnel in the cellar.

The food is of restaurant quality and presented beautifully, the menu is a little more expensive than your wetherspoon counterparts but is much better quality. There is a children's play area outside the back and table seating all around the pub, great in the summer with an extr bar outside !! The best part about The Talpore is the points card, if you go regular enough the points soon build up giving great discounts and money off vouchers.

Friendly attentive service. They serve Lavazza coffee which was also a plus. Had the mushroom eggs benedict. They do have the traditional if that is what you are looking for. The coffee is from a machine so not as good as from a real expresso machine but not bad and you can select from black, cappuccino, latte etc. Order your food at the bar and they will serve it to you at the table.

It's the old court, from back when stockton had criminals, and it wasn't til 1998 when it opened that I realised what a terrific building it actually is. I'd been to the huge Moon under Water in Manchester, and this one is even better. Not as large, but still enormous, with a great huge open space in the middle where the old court was, then little cosy areas to the sides, with real coal fires, where the original offices were. Back then the cheapest pint was Fosters at 80p, and for six months or so we had the place to ourselves; it hadn't got onto other people's radar. It was back in the day when Wetherspoon's food was cheap but awful, and I had many a plate of horrible sausages and mash. Now it tends to be full to the gills with pre clubbers of an evening but is still nice and quiet during the day should you wish to get smashed in pleasant surroundings.

We often start a night out at the Royal Oak as it is a good pub and a good place to catch up with friends, as the music is not too loud and there are plenty of places to sit. The toilets are upstairs so not ideal for disabled visitors! The drinks here do seem a little more expensive than most of the other pubs in the High Street. There is karaoke on a couple of times a week which does get very busy, and is always a good laugh. I've never eaten in the Royal Oak but I have heard other people say they've not been too impressed with the food, and I have also heard that it is becoming something of a gay bar, but in fairness Stockton no longer has any gay bars so why not? I would recommend the Royal Oak as a good place to meet friends before heading further into town for a night out.
