"The arts are essential to any complete national life. The State owes it to itself to sustain and encourage them....Ill fares the race which fails to salute the arts with the reverence and delight which are their due." - Winston Churchill This is the correct quote that Churchill made about the arts, not the fictitious meme. However, in a society that is currently being led by an incurious man-child possessing neither much critical thinking intelligence or much wit, the arts become even more important as we attempt to hang on to what is left of our soul. In LA for business, I stopped in at BertArt Studio Gallery and was very impressed with her work. I know Clara only through Yelp but I can see why her highly textural abstract works garner such praise and awards. This is art you can feel tactilely and emotionally. Some works evoke the sea, some of personal creation. All are made by Clara with a deep personal investment and heart. She is a kind person, with a lovely energy. She is also an example of how one can never give up on love, as she eventually found the person meant for her. That's a great example for those of us (cough, cough) whose relationship status is always marked "complicated" ;-) Photos to follow. You can visit the studio during the week or during DTLA Artwalk or even at various shows and galleries around S. California. Whether you create art, or admire art, definitely support art. It is what will keep us humane during inhumane times. read more

Stress. That is how I can currently describe myself. One big ball of stress. Let me stress (pun intended) that I eat well, exercise 6 days a week (cardio and pilates), hike, and have a loving boyfriend; but yet I am beyond stressed about several issues, most of which are financial. Let me introduce you to a peaceful, zen-like experience which (at least for a few hours) lessened my stress. No, it isn't Yoga. A walk at the beach? No, not that either. It is a "Ladies Night In" class at Berta Art. Now, you probably imagine a strict classroom environment where the instructor dictates your art, stumping your creativity versus allowing it to flow freely. Well, erase that thought because that is far from the truth at Berta Art. Clara's art studio is located at her home (which also doubles as a Bed- n-Breakfast type establishment) in a guest house/pool house. The environment is stunning. The architecture of the home itself plus the art work decorating the rooms is already enough to get your creative juices flowing. The pool, gardens, and hot tub will get you drooling. While the vibe will melt off stress. It is plain and simply gorgeous and not really describable. There is just something about it which is more calming than a bubble-bath or a fireplace. Lately, whatever activity I engage in, I still think about my stresses but not here. This is the type of place I want to just come to and lay down for a few minutes to clear my head. The actual Ladies Night In is a wonderful program. Spending time with other creative women (and you don't have to be a pro, your inner artistic-self will be released in such an environment) while first chatting around wine and cheese already makes you feel like you are at a bridal shower minus the cheesy games. The class itself is well introduced by Clara at which point she provides a plethora of materials (canvases, dried flowers, paints, tissue paper, tea bags, coffee filters-- anything you can think of as art) and helps you begin your art journey. She is never overbearing and lets you create your own piece while offering either a few tips on the methods or positive words. Clara's main attributes as a teacher is her positivity and her genuine interest in art. One can tell that she is very proud of each and everyone of her students. It's not really a class but more of a bonding, artistic get-together. Berta Art is a wonderful addition to the world of art. Whether you seek an activity for your girlfriend visiting from out-of-town, a location for a bridal shower, or just an activity to augment your workout regimen (seriously, this class is as peaceful as a massage or meditation); then Berta Art is the place to go. Plus, you will go home with a piece of art you will be proud of. read more

I bought a piece of art of Clara Berta about a year ago, and omg --- I love the piece. Already framed, it has instantly become the center of the room, and the best art that I possess. "Breakthrough", was instrumental in a new method of her painting. It's mixed media, and 36" x 36". I feel privileged to own such a work, and it has helped make my apartment feel like a home. Thank you Clara! read more

I've known Clara for about 12 years (which is close to when she started doing art as more than a hobby) and she's addictively cheerful and sensitive about everything she does. My collection is all early works, and just like the early works of Picasso, that only recently have been revealed, my guests and friends who view them have marvelled at the evolutionary process every artist goes through on their journey towards their making their visions into reality. In regards to Clara's teaching studio, she embraces every student at her studio with warmth and encouragement, bringing out the best potential in every budding artist. It's not about copying a still life piece, nor painting another landscape as an oil-photograph, her process is much more emotional and expressive. Students become connected to their work and learn to express beyond the confines of realism and even expressionism. The best way to learn about Clara's style and scope is to simply visit her either at her private studio, or one of her many gallery showings around. She'll be the engaging and energetic woman making everyone feel welcome in the room - you won't be able to miss her, and once you've met her, you will ever after. read more

You will have one of the kind experience with Berta in her workshop. I participated in her mixed media painting workshop with a group of friends to celebrate my birthday. I wanted to get in touch with my creative side again and that is exactly what happened at the studio. It is not just one factor but whole experience of being there at the studio with Berta was so inspirational and therapeutic. You will get to create your own art without having to have a previous skills and knowledge of fine art. Also you will get to focus on present happenings with your art and processing it thru not only paints but also daily things that are part of our life such as a piece of string, torn papers, coffee, tea etc. Berta is amazing artist and teacher who is patient and understand your own inner processing thru art. She gently provides instructions and suggestions to get deeper and develop more with your art piece. She also teach you patience (e.g. how to control yourself and stop artmaking when the painting is too wet), wisdom of life thru art(e.g. It is ok to make mistakes, we can go back and try something else) and also how to observe your own artwork in a distance in order to learn what needs next. She also teaches various techniques that she has found and learned herself which is so valuable. I can just go on and on and raving abt berta's art workshop. But you will have to try out to experience yourself! read more

I'm so glad to have Clara to be my teacher. I found her paintings in Google and I love them. I already learned a lot at the 1st class with her. Although it's 35 min driving from my home to her studio, I'm still expecting more classes to come. Highly recommend, if you need an art mentor! read more

I have two of Clara's Whispers collection paintings on my wall and it has been a hit with my family and friends, Clara used fabric reliefs over the canvas and the closer you get the more detail you see, When you visit her gallery you realize that she is an artist with a lot of inspiration and not one style fits all. This painting instills calm and I hung it upside down because I see fashion inspirations! several clothing items visible when upside down....I am a fashion photographer and my wife agrees with me, the small painting has an amazing teal/turquoise background with a gold fabric relief which is in my daughters room, I am posting a photo of the large painting in our living room here on Yelp. read more

Clara's studio boasts both a warm and welcoming feeling when you enter, yet with its high ceilings and lots of lovely natural light cast down throughout the room, there is also a palpable feeling of granduer. At the other side of the room is a full wall of windows, window panes with old fashioned hinges and layers of paint, almost as though it were trying to hide its age, when truly, that is the very essence of its beauty. This is probably what I love most about it. While part of you is standing in a freshly painted "utilitarian" room, you are suddenly struck by the amazing charm and history of the building! It evokes a feeling that you are no longer standing in a room where art is created; that really you are now a part of that rich history of artists who called Los Angeles their home back when these buildings were first built. It's exciting to be a part of a city so rich with art and diverse culture, such as L.A., takes pride in itself once again. But I digress! It's this rich history that I believe inspires Clara's work that has been lovingly placed up and down the hallways leading up to her studio. More of her pieces adorn the walls on either side. Some have flourishes of blues and greys with some yellow here and there. The textures that are mixed in, sometimes take on a tranquility of being in the woods. Then there are those that are just perfectly simplistic with a flair of black or red, evoking a bold statement in a single glance. I didn't intend to write a review if the art itself, but felt it was important to convey the feeling of the surroundings of this lovely studio! As for the class, Clara provides a very nice and unpretentious arena to learn in. She has such a genuine wide-eyed enthusiasm to share what she herself has learned, and can't wait to share it with you! At the same time, she will give it to you straight! My friends have always told me I'm a good artist, and I'm not saying that I'm not; I just knew that I needed to take it to the next level to be taken seriously in the L.A. market! So thank you Clara, for providing such a fun and eclectic space to give my work that nudge out of the nest, so to speak! read more

Clara's art space is extremely welcoming and inviting. I walked in staring at a canvas, and left with a person piece of art.
