In LA for business, I stopped in at BertArt Studio Gallery and was very impressed with her work. I know Clara only through Yelp but I can see why her highly textural abstract works garner such praise and awards. This is art you can feel tactilely and emotionally. Some works evoke the sea, some of personal creation. All are made by Clara with a deep personal investment and heart. She is a kind person, with a lovely energy. She is also an example of how one can never give up on love, as she eventually found the person meant for her. Stress. That is how I can currently describe myself. One big ball of stress. Let me stress (pun intended) that I eat well, exercise 6 days a week (cardio and pilates), hike, and have a loving boyfriend; but yet I am beyond stressed about several issues, most of which are financial. Let me introduce you to a peaceful, zen-like experience which (at least for a few hours) lessened my stress. No, it isn't Yoga. A walk at the beach? No, not that either. It is a "Ladies Night In" class at Berta Art. Now, you probably imagine a strict classroom environment where the instructor dictates your art, stumping your creativity versus allowing it to flow freely. Well, erase that thought because that is far from the truth at Berta Art. Clara's art studio is located at her home (which also doubles as a Bed- n-Breakfast type establishment) in a guest house/pool house. The environment is stunning. The architecture of the home itself plus the art work decorating the rooms is already enough to get your creative juices flowing. The pool, gardens, and hot tub will get you drooling. While the vibe will melt off stress. It is plain and simply gorgeous and not really describable. There is just something about it which is more calming than a bubble-bath or a fireplace. Lately, whatever activity I engage in, I still think about my stresses but not here. This is the type of place I want to just come to and lay down for a few minutes to clear my head. The actual Ladies Night In is a wonderful program. Spending time with other creative women (and you don't have to be a pro, your inner artistic-self will be released in such an environment) while first chatting around wine and cheese already makes you feel like you are at a bridal shower minus the cheesy games. The class itself is well introduced by Clara at which point she provides a plethora of materials (canvases, dried flowers, paints, tissue paper, tea bags, coffee filters-- anything you can think of as art) and helps you begin your art journey. She is never overbearing and lets you create your own piece while offering either a few tips on the methods or positive words. Clara's main attributes as a teacher is her positivity and her genuine interest in art. One can tell that she is very proud of each and everyone of her students. It's not really a class but more of a bonding, artistic get-together. Berta Art is a wonderful addition to the world of art. I wanted to get in touch with my creative side again and that is exactly what happened at the studio. Clara's studio boasts both a warm and welcoming feeling when you enter, yet with its high ceilings and lots of lovely natural light cast down throughout the room, there is also a palpable feeling of granduer. At the other side of the room is a full wall of windows, window panes with old fashioned hinges and layers of paint, almost as though it were trying to hide its age, when truly, that is the very essence of its beauty. This is probably what I love most about it. While part of you is standing in a freshly painted "utilitarian" room, you are suddenly struck by the amazing charm and history of the building! It evokes a feeling that you are no longer standing in a room where art is created; that really you are now a part of that rich history of artists who called Los Angeles their home back when these buildings were first built. It's exciting to be a part of a city so rich with art and diverse culture, such as L.A., takes pride in itself once again. But I digress! It's this rich history that I believe inspires Clara's work that has been lovingly placed up and down the hallways leading up to her studio. More of her pieces adorn the walls on either side. Some have flourishes of blues and greys with some yellow here and there. The textures that are mixed in, sometimes take on a tranquility of being in the woods. Then there are those that are just perfectly simplistic with a flair of black or red, evoking a bold statement in a single glance. I didn't intend to write a review if the art itself, but felt it was important to convey the feeling of the surroundings of this lovely studio! As for the class, Clara provides a very nice and unpretentious arena to learn in. She has such a genuine wide-eyed enthusiasm to share what she herself has learned, and can't wait to share it with you! At the same time, she will give it to you straight! My friends have always told me I'm a good artist, and I'm not saying that I'm not; I just knew that I needed to take it to the next level to be taken seriously in the L.A. market!
