I moved into my old 1922 year old house, that I had previously rented out, two years ago to find…read moreout that there was a lot of deferred maintenance that needed to be taken care of. (Not a surprise.) I had seen Tawmie in the neighborhood because she walks her beautiful big coon hound dog, Jake, and I knew that she had something to do with contracting, so I asked her if she knew anyone who could do a small outdoor paint job. She told me that she is a "Finish Carpenter/Contractor," but not only did she know another neighbor who could do the job, but she helped him replace some of the old rotted wood that needed to be removed. Since that time I have asked Tawmie to help me on several other jobs, and her work is extraordinary. I am in awe of the precision of her work and how beautiful her craftsmanship is. She obviously loves what she does and it shows. She is an absolutely stellar professional, and her rates are reasonable. How could you go wrong? After reading these other reviews and seeing examples of her other work, I now have ideas for many more projects for her in the future.

We have hired Tawmie, the owner of All About the Finish for a number of projects over the years and…read moreshe has never failed to amaze us. She created a fantastic pull-out pantry for us on the top half of a very deep closet and pull-out drawers on the bottom. She helped us visualize how to modestly remodel our kitchen by turning a wall that had previously had an oven wall into a counter extension with cabinets on top and drawers underneath (the drawers were refurbished from the drawers under the stovetop which we replaced with a full oven/stove. Later we rehired her for a hall closet remake that has pull out drawers and a place for a broom and mop. After that, we hired her to turn our perpetually broken sliding bedroom closet doors into accordion-style doors. She used the original doors. Most recently we've hired her to create a corner table in our living room to hold a sculpture. She just finished that today, and we love it. Next week, she's installing two benches she constructed on either side of a beautiful cabinet made by my father-in-law many decades ago which we just inherited. Tawmie will take the time to listen to what we want, help us brainstorm and visualize what the outcome will be, and then make something that exceeds our expectations. We highly recommend her.

We found Kirsten's approach to scoping and estimating the project to be fair and detailed. She gave us good insight into what changes we should expect in order to bring the space up to code, so there were almost no "gotchas" along the way. Her crew was professional, friendly, and did good quality work; they communicated well with us about their schedules and kept the project space tidy. Even with the onset of the pandemic, they were able to work safely and delivered the project on time - no small feat!

And again, we continue to recommend them unreservedly. We really love working with the team. One thing that really stands out is how they've been able to accommodate our schedule/asks; for example, we have worked with them to schedule two projects while we were out of the house on vacations to avoid disruption (which has made this effortless). Many thanks to Kirsten, Kris, Cam, Marco and team!

We had a great experience end to end with Miu and Jay. She replied quickly to my request and I knew…read morefrom our phone consultation that it would be a strong partnership. She asked a lot of questions that showed her engagement and interest. We had a general sense of what we wanted for our kitchen remodel and Miu guided us with some ideas and suggestions to polish our vision. Throughout the process they were highly communicative, organized, and regularly dropped in to provide direction to the project team and ask us questions. Each day the project team would clean everything up and vacuum the outdoor area so that our child was protected from construction debris. Being licensed contractors, everything was built to code, which was important for a complete tear down remodel for the kitchen. Their price was about 20-30% lower than the other contractors who came to see the project and the timeline was 2-4 weeks faster. The crazy part is the project was delivered exactly on budget and even a bit earlier than estimated. We love the new kitchen and feel like we bought a new house. It's the best investment we've made to our living space. Thank you so much Bay Modern Build!

We hired them to help us design and remodel our kitchen and second-story porch in our 1914 Oakland triplex. They were great at taking our initial ideas and putting together a clear plan to bring them to life, and they were very willing to fabricate a few custom elements that other firms were spoke with were unwilling to consider. They navigated the byzantine city permitting process with expertise, and once the project was underway, the crew always showed up on time, worked hard all day, and left the job site clean at the end of the workday. When the inevitable hiccups arose, we were so thrilled with the way that Jay and Miu navigated the pitfalls and pivoted to solutions. They were both very communicative about change orders and additional costs. And in the end they finished the project early and on budget! We could not be more thrilled with the results, and would not hesitate to work with Bay Modern Build again and recommend them to anyone considering a major remodel. Thank you Miu, Jay and crew!

We interviewed 6 different contractors and ultimately decided on Gavan Duffy of Build It Green Contractors (B.I.G.) (license#886570) I won't get into all of the details of our decision, only the key elements which were: 1. Budget, our project came in slightly over budget. Not due to B.I.G, but to a few changes we decided to make and the general nature of working on a house built in the 20s and all the little surprises we found along the way. The important aspect for us was Gavan's clear communication with us regarding our options and the costs associated with each choice. 2. Timing, Gavan has a young child and he understands all of the challenges and changes associated with being expectant parents. He and his crew worked hard to stay within our time frame and still give us plenty of time to get our house in order prior to the baby's arrival. 3. Quality, We could not be happier with the attention to detail that Gavan and crew put into our remodel. Our house is stunning and the work is craftsman-like. 4. Cleanliness, this may not be important to everyone, but construction is messy work and B.I.G. cleaned up after themselves after each day. To me this demonstrated the commitment to quality that Gavan and crew insist on. If you have a remodel scheduled, then I encourage you to discuss it with Gavan Duffy at B.I.G.

Gavan and Build It Green was not the first contractor that I contacted for my leak issue, but he…read morewas the first to promptly organize a time to scope the matter. My plan was to call several contractors, collect quotes and pick from the lowest price and/or best match. But, Gavan made it easy enough, and I trusted his assessment enough that I ended up going with him without much additional due diligence. The leak issue wasn't able to be fully diagnosed without removing the stucco on the outside and dry wall on the inside - so Gavan suggested starting there. He produced a small initial quote for labor - which would allow him to produce a more accurate total quote. From there, he provided an estimate that ended up being within 5% of the final cost. He had a wide ranging team working for him - most notably Omar, a very friendly and extremely capable contractor in his own right, as well as several others. He brought in specialists for the roofing and stucco work, as well. The only issue to raise was that scheduling was sometimes challenging - as Gavan is a pretty busy fellow and who was consistently coordinating so many other parties. Sometimes, schedules were shifted around - which did require some flexibility from my wife and I, but nothing too problematic. At the end of the day, he and his team were trustworthy, were all very polite and friendly, and produced very solid work and cleaned up nicely afterwards. I would recommend Gavan and Build It Green, and in fact - when another small project arose within weeks of the big project - I didn't hesitate to call Gavan again.
