The walls (and ceiling) are…read moreadorned with old motorcycle gas tanks, neon lights, old steel signs, wild photos from generations past, patron memorabilia, and Christmas lights year-round. The typical old wood vibe of many UP establishments that have survived the test of time. A spot for pool in the back, guys pee in a trough instead of urinals LOL, there's chalkboard doors with drink specials, random musical performances, a patio out back for hangin and smoking, it's just a great place to enjoy the Yooper life and meet a local or five. It's an easy place to become a regular just based off of the bartenders alone (Tori is a gem, she won't fail to make you laugh). They have great merch like shirts, sweatshirts, stickers, pins, shot glasses, etc. (I designed a few of their stickers while I was in college a decade ago, so glad to see they still sell them grab a buffalo drinking a PBR that I drew while drinking a $1 PBR at the Nickel one night in 2015). Popcorn is available, bubble hockey is a must, try a Nickelade or a green tea shot. I know they had a build your own Bloody bar at one point but I'm not sure if it's a regular thing anymore, if you see it happening don't miss it. Good price for a delicious bloody with all sorts of toppings and fresh cooked bacon! Great prices all around, good people, always a fun time at the Nickel

Seeing it won MLive's "Best Local Bar" award intrigued me, so I stopped in for a beer and a burger. I don't know how this got put in the category of dive bars. It's a pretty typical small town UP tavern. It's clean, decorated with the usual game heads and yooper memorabilia. Ceiling tiles dish up a little history with your beverage by commemorating locals or some of the long-established hunting camps in the area. They had a few UP beers on offer, so I took a bottle of Upper Hand brewing's U.P.A. Very nice pale ale with more flavor than most, trending toward IPA territory. Burger was fair. Nice sized but overcooked, a little chewy. I got swiss and mushrooms on it; the swiss was processed and the mushrooms came from a can. But they never bragged about artisanal fare. It wasn't bad, and I'd probably get another burger there...maybe just a plain one though. Would definitely get french fries again--they were excellent. Thin cut, crisp, put me in mind of McDonald's fries on their really good days. There were about five people there when I came in at about 9:00 on a Friday. They left quickly, leaving me alone with the bartender, before a couple came in a bit later. Didn't feel out of place though. The bartender was friendly, and I got into an interesting conversation with the couple. Very comfortable hangout, even with a thin crowd. Do be aware Hoppy's does not take credit cards. Luckily there's an ATM in the back. Nice to have another dining option in Kenton.
