Coach Joo Hee is an amazing coach. I've been a competitive athlete my entire life doing taekwondo,…read morecross country, track, basketball, and climbing. I also have been a high school cross country and track coach for over 20 years, and paraclimbing coach for 2 years. I've been powerlifting for a couple years and chose to compete this year just as a challenge for myself and to have a goal to work toward. It ended up being a lot of fun and a great learning experience. After that, I decided I wanted to take powerlifting more seriously, so I reached out to coach Joo Hee. When I started, I was a little confused because it was completely different to the training methods I was used to. Her coaching allowed me find adjustments in my lifts, along with the understanding and reasoning behind it, such as keeping tension in certain areas to prevent injury. She will help you understand your body and what movement/lifting style will best suit your body type. Back then, I used to lift a lot heavier using an online program, but I was always hurt or in pain. However, through working with coach, she helped me realize it's not about lifting heavy, and that success will come from prioritizing the right technique and having correct body tension, which will prevent injuries. I am grateful for this lesson. If you need someone that will listen to your complaints and whiney-ness, coach has the personality and patience to deal with you. It's also just great to have a coach to do all the calculations and give you a training program, that way you can just focus on lifting. 10/10 would recommend.

I started working out at Lift two months ago, and I absolutely love it…read more The workouts are effective and efficient, and, if you're a nerd like me, it's interesting to hear Dirk and Chenell talk about how the movements strengthen different muscle groups. They're always nearby to make sure my form is correct, and they never lose patience when I ask them to remind me how to do certain moves. Speaking of supervision, I went to Lift today for the first time in about a week and a half, and I told Chenell that I've been experiencing some pain in my left shoulder. She sent Dirk outside to talk to me about it, and after I described my symptoms, he re-wrote part of my workout and continued to check in to make sure I wasn't in any pain. I felt super safe and respected, and there was ZERO pressure for me to push through any discomfort. Hiiiighly recommend this place!

I've heard him say verbatim to a woman next to me, " that's because you're stupid". Another time " yeah, you're an idiot". He's demeaned me many times. I just accepted it as part of The Lift Silverlake Experience. One day I came in and said "nice new shirt and it looks fancy and you look nice.. which he replied to me "what about you? You look like you just rolled out of bed and put on dirty clothes". Which is hilarious because I was fresh out of the shower with fresh clean clothes.. I always showered before my workout because Dirk likes to make fun of people who smell. I was giving him a compliment but he doesn't know how to take it, so he spews hate. After that interaction he banned me from his paid social club. I said nothing except what I mentioned above and when questioned why I was banned, they simply said they didn't want to talk about it. I attached Dirk's email banning me so you can see that obviously I was a very good client and they never had issues in the past. I was never late. I never missed a session. I never acted inappropriately ever.. I spent over $6,000 dollars training with them. Dirk is a very troubled person and I hope he finds help for his mental issues. I wish everyone at Lift Silverlake the best and it would be a beautiful place without Dirk there with all his hate and spite. God bless and always sending prayers for peace, comfort and grace. Dirk and Chenell... People are paying you for a service. Not to be put down, bullied or traumatized. It's not just bad business, you're messing with peoples' lives, their goals and their ambitions. Please stop crushing people's passion for exercise. Lastly, he doesn't allow black people at the gym. He prefers white women and beta white men. If you don't get contacted back by them it's because they profiled your age, sex, and/or race with their interview process and didn't like you..

I…read moredidn't know reservations were required, but was very appreciative of the owner's invitation to attend, despite the full class. Karl was supportive, positive, professional and both trainers gave individualized attention to the 11 people in the room. The classes really should be more like 6-7 people for the space though, and they could have spent more time demonstrating the circuit to help people avoid injury since it's faster-paced. Overall, good trainers, accommodating and challenging. I've been planning to purchase a bulk package for the year so I could attend on Saturdays with my friend, and in the meantime, I actively engaged with the Instagram page, trying out their exercises on my own, liking their posts, and recommending it to two of my own clients and a friend, just after the one session. However, as a business in 2017, how you interact with the public on social media is critical. Their Instagram is a nice extension of what they do in the classes, but I started to find some of their meat shaming rhetoric offensive (and PS: I'm not alone in this). I am not anti-vegan, simply a strong advocate for food and body positivity-- there are lots of ways to practice a healthy lifestyle. So I spoke out, letting them know that I found the tone to be repelling, and that it made me question whether the studio was the right fit for me. I shared my own negative experience as a vegan and pointed out that there needs to be substantiated evidence on the claim that "dead animals" cause inflammation of one's olfactory senses. If you're in the business of handling people's health, peer-reviewed, evidence-based, clinical science is kind of important... Perhaps my comment lacked decorum, but nonetheless, there is a way to handle negative comments productively-- they could have easily won me over with a single sentence. But instead, the business chose to become defensive, argumentative, and hostile, engaging in downright school yard bullying tactics. The business exploded my feed, strategically singling out dozens of my photos of unhealthy, caloric dense, meaty celebratory meals, and liking them; a passive aggressive move, as if pointedly saying, "Oh yeah, you wanna say something negative about OUR food choices, fatty?" Then, one of their clients surpassed the passive aggressive by directly calling me fat, lazy and a sugar/ saturated fat addict, making gross assumptions about my eating, body and workout habits, which the business tolerated and agreed with. All because I expressed the fact that I found the tone of her post to be insulting. You are supposed to be in the line of lifting people up and inspiring them. And while there's always some annoyingly sensitive PC client who takes offense to *something* (and perhaps that was me this time) how you handle people who express dissenting opinions is revelatory, and in this case, it demonstrates a severe lack of professionalism, insensitivity, and a disturbing vein of intolerance pulsing beneath the veneer of an otherwise decent studio.
