This place was packed…read morewhen we arrived, as expected since it is one of the most well-known schnitzel spots in Vienna. I was worried this place was over-hyped and more of a place you have to "check off the list" than somewhere you want to eat because of the food. If you have any doubts like I did, forget about them because this was actually the best schnitzel we had on our trip! Their potato salad and tomato salads, also amazing! I love that they had option for their schnitzel - the chicken and original were our favorites! Definitely check this spot out when in Vienna - you won't be disappointed!

This is probably one of the most popular schnitzel restaurants in all of Vienna. Do not come…read morewithout a reservation unless you're prepared to stand outside for quite some time. I had a reservation at 11:30am and there was already an insane line just to get in. Then once they opened the doors other groups of people completely ignore the line outside and just start rushing in. They're in absolutely no rush to seat you so don't have any hope that they'll let you in early. Once you're seated the service is pretty fast. The schnitzel is quite large and good for sharing. I had the original schnitzel with pork. It was thin and crispy but under seasoned in my opinion. The potato salad was the star for me I could have had one all to myself. It was creamy, a little sweet, and tangy. I also tried the soup with clear beef broth and sliced pancakes. Nothing memorable but a nice clean soup if you're in the mood.

There are several Plachuttas restaurants. We ate the one close to the Opera House. Plachutta's…read morespeciality is the beef soup in copper pot called Tafelspitz. That was our choice for the night. The beef soup was indeed interesting. It was cooked with bone-in beef shanks/marrow and some vegetables. Thus it's very rich and on the salty side. The hashed potatoes and hard wheat toast came with the soup. And the horseradish and applesauce were part of condiments. We always ordered the leafy greens as appetizers. The meal could be better if the waiter brought out the salad first. Anyhow, the hot pot, its condiments, bowls, and the salads all showed up at the same time, making the 2-person table really crowded. That might be the area for improvement. The vibe of the restaurant was lively with opera goers and international tourists. So it felt like a pub sometimes.

The restaurant is near the Opera House, easy walking distance from our hotel. We ordered the sirloin steak 200gms, chanterelle mushroom goulash, tomato cucumber soup, and beef broth. Everything was fresh and delicious. Coming from CA, you cannot get a steak this good for $40. I was especially impressed by the mushroom goulash. I think I like it even more than the traditional meat goulash. The lovely waiter we had seemed to be serving ALL the tables. He was very kind and worked so hard. I would definitely come back to this restaurant.

We had a dinner reservation on an early September Sunday and were able to eat outside in the expansive garden area, which was prettily designed with lots of lighting and greenery. Our server was really nice, though it took a little while for her to come by initially. The pumpkin soup was a showstopper: creamy, nutty, and mildly sweet. I would order this again and again. The pierogis were also very good, doughy and yet airy, with a pillowy potato filling and served with caramelized onions and sour cream. The wine list, which even included a slew of natural and pet nat options, is the best I've seen in Austria so far. I love pet nats but haven't seen many Austrian offerings of the style, either in the country or abroad. Here, I tried a delicious Gelber Muskateller pet nat and also had a Zweigelt.

We chose the pork - delicious. Perfect potato salad, not too sweet. Goulash was yummy but a bit much in the main size. I should have ordered the small. The pork schnitzel was the standout - dlavorful, thin, golden. The goulash lacked some of the flavour and complexity of other goulashes I've had in the past in Austria and Hungary. Service was friendly. I tried my German but all the waiters spoke great English, and the menu had English translations at the back. Booking is recommended, you can book easily from their website. Pork Schnitzel + goulash + mixed salad + 1 beer + 1 Bellini was €50ish. Recommend the courtyard in good weather!
