Possibly the first time I've been at the establishment. Came as part of a meet-up for their tent sale / outdoors event. They very generously provided wonderful bratwurst nut just be careful of the super hot mustard. A real zinger. Love that this business has been around since 1946. A well stocked and widely varied selection of wines and other beverages. In a cozy wood paneled setting, screams 'INVITING'. They also have a sitting room/tasting room along with bar and TVs. Perfect for just hanging out and possibly for organized gatherings. This place oozes taste and sophistication but with down to earth practicality. Spoke with the granddaughter or a great granddaughter, working the register, of the originator of the business. Family institutions hold a place near and dear in my heart. And on top of that this seems to be the place to find just about anything you're looking for; if they don't have it I've got a strong feeling that the staff will help procure it. Definitely looking forward to maybe getting their recommendations for pairings with finer food dishes. Looking forward to tying into what this place has to offer. read more

I love this place! Great spot for a relaxing drink with friends, finding that perfect bottle, and now they have a biweekly Wednesday night market that I just adore! My friends love the beer selection but I'm a wine girly- and I never have a problem finding something delicious and budget friendly. Frequent beer and wine tastings (mostly on Fridays), plus some occasional themed/holiday dinners (haven't been to one yet, but I want to)! I've been to the tent sale a couple times now and it is a grand slam. The service here is awesome too - friendly and fast. All around, such an awesome bottle shop and watering hole all in one. I've walked by this place a few times and just today decided to stop in. While unassuming from the outside, I was FLOORED by the inside! An incredible beer and wine selection, both local and imported on both counts, but that's really just the beginning. There were also respectable cider, mead, sake, and fortified wine sections as well! The fortified wine section particularly impressed me, small as it was, as it seemed to cater to all tastes: vermouths for all budgets and even wine-based amari like Cardamaro and others! I was very impressed. We really just looked around but we were asked by the employee if he could help with anything shortly after arriving. I did, however, overhear him help another customer when they asked about a product and this guy CLEARLY knew his stuff. Seems like the kind of place you can go in, tell them what you like, and walk out with a slam dunk recommendation. You don't hear people speak of City Beverage often but we all know it's there. It's a locals secret and we like it that way but everyone should experience City Beverage. I use to go every Friday afternoon and hang at the bar (did you know they had a bar in the back?!). Yesterday, I went for the end of season sale. I had a hard time not buying several cases of beer from some of my favorite breweries but I did snag one from my hometown brewery, Olde Hickory Tavern. Then I walked around bright eyed, looking at all the things. Steins from the year I was born (would like for a present if you're feeling the need to buy me something), beer making essentials, beautiful wines, local sauces and snacks... I went to Wake Forest for undergrad, so as soon as I turned 21, City Beverage became the go-to shop for me and my fiancée. We probably have gone there about 30 times and bought thousands of dollars worth of delicious beer, wine, cider, and mead.City Beverage helped save us from the undergrad oblivion of Natty Ice and actually cultivated an affection and taste for well-made alcohol. Yet, I got to say, as a semi-regular customer over the years, the shop owners and workers are just not very good at making their customers feel welcome or appreciated at all. As a great local business with an amazing selection, we truly wanted to support them and give them the benefit of the doubt - but they just have never stepped up and been kind even in the slightest. It's not that the owner in particular is outright rude - but he definitely is disengaged and not helpful. We went in the other day to consider City Beverage as our wine vendor for our wedding in a few weeks - with the hope of talk of a potential discount for a bulk purchase, or at the very least some expertise-sharing or assistance. Nope. Nada. He just pointed us in the direction of the wine (which after something like 30 visits to the shop, we knew exactly where to find it). My fiancée and I always leave City Beverage a bit puzzled - wondering what the deal exactly is with the people who work there and own the place. Still haven't put our fingers on it. We are now leaving Winston-Salem and really hope to find a "City Beverage"-quality establishment in our new town (hopefully with nicer owners). The take away message: the service sucks, but the selection is so frackin' good that won't deter you. read more

I'm sure this is the best place for beer in the city. There are two rooms. In one, they have a section for brewers that probably has everything you need to make your own homebrew. They have lots of chilled foreign and domestic microbrews available in the cooler. They also have a good selection of wines and sparkling wines/champagne. The other room is basically a bottle shop. Tons of beers in all different styles from breweries all across the world. Their floor-to-ceiling selection is really very impressive - it's much better than most places here in Atlanta even. There were a couple things I couldn't find, but there was also a lot of stuff I hadn't seen before. They had a lot of glassware as well which was cool. Probably the coolest thing was that they have a bar in the store! It looks like they have a few beers on tap and there are seats and some sofas to sit on. They offer lots of tastings here it seems. Prices were ok - high, but not really for what we got (expensive beer). The guy working there (presumably the owner?) was helpful when asked, but wasn't all that welcoming or pleasant. Overall, I thought this place was great and very impressed with their selection and the in-store bar. I could definitely see myself coming here frequently if I lived here. 4.5 read more

This is a great local beer and wine store. They had a large selection of beers you would not find at most places. It was a little dark on the inside but I think it is part of the charm. They also had a tasting area in the back. I wanted to try it but there was already a group there. I hope next time I go back I can try a tasting. The prices were comparable to other stores which is a plus. read more

If you're looking for a wide variety of craft beer and international wine, this is the place! The staff here are extremely knowledgeable and can always help you leave happy with new or familiar beverages. They also have an 8 tap bar on one side of the store where you can enjoy pints while you shop or sit on the couch, enjoy beer and wine tastings each week, sample beers on tap, order kegs for your at home set up or parties, and get your growlers filled! Not to mention they have glassware for any type of beer, if you're into that sort of thing haha wine, champagne, and port selection is the best in town. They also host food trucks pretty often on the weekends that they post on social media. And not to even mention they have ALL the home brew ingredients and equipment you could ever need even if you're a beginner or a seasoned home brewer! This is a difficult place to review. On one hand, they have a tremendous selection of beer, wine, and brewing supplies. On the other hand, they have ALWAYS been oddly rude, unappreciative, no help and EXPENSIVE. The last keg I rented here (PBR with a tap and bucket) cost $100! Normally places charge around $70 for that. Each time I go in I'm forced to sit at the counter while the owner does something on his phone and pretends not to notice me. Usually after about 3 minutes I just tell him what I want whether he's ready or not and he does it without saying a word. I don't really like paying inflated prices for that type of service. read more

Note: I'm sure they have a great wine selection, but I never buy wine, so this review is focused on beer. I love that Winston has this place, as it is amazing, but I had to deduct 1 star because of prices. I guess when you are the only boutique beer store in a city, you can charge what you want, but this place will really break your wallet. And $10 beer glasses? Wow. I had to buy one cause it was a Rochefort that I hadn't seen before, but still. My other 30 glasses probably cost me $60-70 altogether. Anyways, once you have accepted that you will be dropping some dough in this place, it is fantastic. I've only been to 10 beer stores or less, but of the ones I've been to, this by far has the best selection. Most beers are sectioned off by country, and they've got some of everything. Tons of domestics, including most of the special releases by the larger breweries (like Dogfish's neverending slew of weirdness), lots of Germans weizens, a decent British selection (though that's not really my thing). And the glorious, glorious Belgians. I'm sure that there are places, maybe even in NC, that have a wider selection of Belgians, but City Bev's is good sized, and carefully selected. This selection alone could keep me very busy. If you are a saison fan like I am, I think that Best Way in Greensboro has a a better selection of that style, but City Bev's is pretty decent. And of course there are a bunch of other countries/styles in here (kolsches, Asian lagers, African, Canadian, Scottish, etc.), but I typically stick to Belgian, American and German. I've never really looked at the local selections, but I'm sure that there are some in there somewhere. There is a bar inside. There are only 2 (or 3?) selections at any time, but they change it up fairly often, and what they have is always either really, really good, or a very limited release. The store is very, very nice inside, and putting a bar in there was a great idea. There are a few couches around and some magazines, plus you can browse the store. Service is decent. The father is a nice guy, but kind of quiet and I believe that he is more knowledgeable on their wine. If you have serious beer questions, you want to catch the son, as he is the beer guy here Make sure to sign up for their e-mail, as they have lots of tastings and specials, plus their semi-annual tent sale. This place would definitely get 5 stars if it weren't for the prices. I always used to go to Pipe and Pint when living in Greensboro, and on average City Bev is at least 20% more expensive, maybe more. But that aside, I love this place, and its a definite must for any beer snob in the area. read more

Wow this place is great! They have almost every craft brew imaginable. Especially the bombers. What I found interesting was that they actually sell homebrew supplies as well. The downside is they do not mill the grains for you. So if you are looking for homebrew supply store, I would recommend homebrewer's clubhouse on Hawthorne.
