I told Bill, the office coordinator, that we have three indoor units and one outdoor unit (the condenser). He said that the total would be $385, but since I'm a new customer there would be a $100 discount, making the total $285 - his words. I agreed to these terms. At no time during our conversation was a figure of $485 uttered by him, something I would not have accepted, even with the discount. And yet, the invoice that I received two days after service completion (about 2 hours' work by one technician) asked for $485 minus the $100 discount, plus a fuel surcharge of $7.50. I called to complain that this was not the agreed-upon amount, but Bill simply denied having made that offer. But I know what I heard him clearly say. Lesson learned - never accept an unwritten quote! The work done was underwhelming - acceptable, but more or less perfunctory without much oral communication about the state of the system. I would recommend anyone needing this service to shop around and get everything in writing before agreeing to the terms. I will not be a continuing customer.

Of all of them, Mike Greives of Dead River was the only one who took the time to explain the pros and cons of oil vs propane and what was the best solution for this home and her situation. Also, the price quoted from Dead River was the cheapest of all of the quotes I got. Not by a lot but it was the best price quoted of the three. When the time came for scheduling the service they worked with us to book the chimney person, the junk hauler, and took care of all of the details (which a few other companies told me I would have to arrange for!). They also accommodated our schedule since the work was done in the summer and was not an emergency call. On the days of installation, I have to shout out the professional work and wonderful attitude of Dale, Joe, and Dustin. They explained all of the details and left the space cleaner than it started! Even better because 3 people were sent they completed the install in 2 days instead of 3. I am so happy that I chose Dead River and believe you should consider them for a large project like the boiler replacement we had!

We hired Hearth Doctor to install a Renaissance 600 fireplace--a pricey, complex unit--and they botched it from start to finish. Safety ignored: They skipped a required radiation shield and told me to stuff insulation against the chimney pipe--an outright fire hazard. Only after I contacted the manufacturer did they reluctantly fix it, which meant removing a chimney already mounted two stories up. Timeline blown: A 2-day job dragged into 3.5 months, with constant delays and misinformation to my contractor. Poor workmanship: They mis-measured, forced rebuilds, denied necessary vents (later confirmed essential by the manufacturer), installed the unit with a broken door, then crudely bent the keyhole instead of replacing it. Finally, the fireplace was left visibly off-level, making finishing work nearly impossible. No accountability: Across six visits between June and September, I never received an apology. When I asked for a discount, they brushed me off, insisting they'd provided a "safe, functional, professional installation" that went "above and beyond" If this is their idea of "above and beyond," I shudder to think what "average" looks like. Bottom line: unsafe, sloppy, unprofessional. Save yourself the grief--do not hire this company.
