Within a matter of moments I was inside the door chatting with Beata about her new salon. It transpires that this beautifully decked out salon is her first, but she has been offered plenty of good advice from her top stylist, who has two hairdressing shops back home in Poland. Kusha has 16 years of experience in both cutting and styling hair, colouring and all other forms of hairdressing as well as successfully running her salons back home. She will now stay permanently in the UK as she has someone else handling her affairs in Poland. This is good news for Viva and it's good news for us! Prices are really affordable with cut and styling starting at £10.00 and a cut and full colour starting at £35.00. Hair ups are a little more expensive, but still competitive at £25.00 to £50.00. A wash and head massage is only £10.00. Being a unisex salon, men can also take advantage of the services offered. A dry cut will cost as little as £7.00 and a colour and cut is a real bargain at £17.00. They also do human hair extensions, with free consultations to discuss your requirements. What I really like about this salon is the attention to detail. Beata seems to have considered everything! There's even a small garden out the back where clients can sit and drink coffee and smoke if they want to, which sure beats standing in the road with foils in your hair which I have been known to do in the past! They have a number of introductory offers, and so now is a good time to get acquainted!

*NOT INCLUDED ON THEIR WEBSITE*…read more My hair was getting far too long. When I want styling, I usually go to pricier salons - have tried Guy Christian, Ken Picton, and Hair Bauhaus previously which are all around the same price range. However, on this occasion I didn't want any styling. I just wanted a straight chop shorter. No layering, nothing. I saw on their website that this would set me back £16 for a basic haircut no wash or styling. So I washed it myself that morning and headed off hoping for a quick in-and-out. When I got there, I found out that taking more than an inch off means that I have to pay the additional styling prices along with getting my hair washed (again). This starts at £22.95 on their website. Because my hair was long, even though I only wanted about 4 inches off and a straight cut (as I said numerous times) they charged me £35. I'm not a hairdresser, so maybe there was a good reason why just having long hair (even though the styling is not complex) is an additional £13 so if someone can enlighten me that would be great because I just feel ripped off. Cons: - The hairwashing station was very uncomfortable. Their headrests really dig into the neck. At other salons I could virtually fall asleep when getting my hair washed but I found myself massaging my sore neck afterwards and counting the seconds during the whole thing. - The hidden additional charges that you don't find out about until you get there Pros: - Granted it was a very simple request, but the woman who cut my hair did a fine job and I got exactly as I asked for. It was a straight cut and everything was lined up fine so I got wanted I wanted. --- Overall, I would come to Supercuts again for anything simple. However, if you have long hair like me and wanted anything styled, I would pay the extra £20 to go to a more expensive salon and actually have an enjoyable experience.

They moved from their original…read moreshopfront on St Mary Street just around the corner onto the quieter Bakers Row, which is a better location. I really like Aveda's weirdly earthy, woody fragrances - and their products are more natural than most used in salons, with up to 95% natural ingredients, according to my stylist. Even the colour is up to 99% naturally derived, so it's less damaging to your hair. The staff seem to be proud to work here, and the salon itself is a relaxing environment in which to spend an hour or so. Some of their stylists specialise in hair for weddings, balls or big nights out - and many have worked as stylists on TV and film productions. They also offer little extras such as free fringe trims between cuts, which is great for regulars. Good city centre salon using more natural products than most - and they even offer a 10% student discount with a valid NUS card.

Fine, very straight hair is always tricky to deal with a lot of hairdressers just try and make it bigger. Doesn't work. With fine hair, if the fringe goes a bit wrong then there is no going back, thinning or tinkering. It needs to be razor straight. So. I couldn't see anymore. I needed a trim. I rang some of the bigger names and some of them refused to trim it, even if I paid, if I hadn't had my hair cut there. Eventually, I gave up, wandered across the road and walked into the first hairdressers I could find. Hair Lounge was a pleasant surprise. It doesn't look much from outside, but inside it is plush and the staff are friendly. I tentatively asked if someone could do my fringe, even though I didn't have my hair cut there, and they were more than happy. I only waited a few minutes and a lovely chap came and got me. He cut my fringe, to my specifications (I know, a hairdresser that listens!) and did it all with a smile. I asked who to pay, and he tried to say there was no charge - so I left a tip. Don't know what it would be like for a full do, but if you're fringe has gone awry...

Since, like some sort of modern-day goldilocks I have tried several different salons based in Cardiff. Yet none quite come close to La Zarou Bros. The same salon my Mum has been visiting for over 20 years - it's where you'll find me EVERY Thursday after work. They have a few salons in the city centre yet my favourite is in Churchill Way. It's somewhat like those American style barber shops - but the female version. The staff aren't just friends they're family. They know you by name and remember conversations they've had with you from months ago. No typical 'off on holiday' or 'we're having nice weather' talks will take place here. What's more despite having long hair I'm not having to worry that my card will decline at the point of payment. My blow-wave (wash, blow-dry into loose curls) costs less than £20 and it's a given that I leave every week feeling as though I should whip my hair back and forth - or at least whisper "because I'm worth it". Note: All the staff here are super talented and most have 'done' my hair at least once yet my all time favourite person here is Alex - not only do I trust him with my daily drama and gossip but I also let him near me with scissors!

Lazarou was recommended to me by a friend as being both good and cheap. When I went there I found that I wasn't awkward. This is worthy of note because I am ALWAYS awkward in hairdressers. Spending that much time talking to someone that I don't know about things that I'm pretty sure they don't care about?... But I found my hairdresser (who also washed my hair) to be very friendly. Whilst he was actually cutting my hair, he asked me what I was doing that weekend. Replying that I was going to the cinema, but didn't knwo what I was going to see, the hairdresser next to me joined in the conversation. To my great enjoyment, the entire hairdressing salon was then involved in the same conversation about what I should go to see.

However, a little while ago I was feeling pretty fed up and decided it was time for a new look. I was feeling brave so I didn't find a picture of what I wanted to look like; I was so desperate for a change that I thought I'd let the stylist to do whatever she thought best. Choosing Vidal Sassoon was pure impulse on my part. I had just left the toilets in the Capitol Centre saw Vidal Sassoon opposite and thought, why not? Vidal Sassoon is one of those intimidating looking salons - lots of mirrors, lots of rich looking people, lots of products that you know you can't afford because you've never seen them in Asda, and it's a little on the pricey side, but it's well worth it if you want a little pampering. You get coffee while you're waiting, a head massage after your hair is washed - everyone treats you like you're their most valued customer. The staff here were all lovely, constantly checking on how my "big chop" was going and offering support and sharing ideas. Everyone was upbeat and happy and could easily convince you that sweeping the hair off the floor was the most exciting job in the world with the way they approached every aspect of their job. The whole experience was enjoyable, and, unlike other hair salons, I felt completely at ease and their excitement about my new hair style rubbed off on me. If you're a poor student, this probably isn't the place for regular appointments, but it's perfect if you want to treat yourself or someone else, and I'll definitely be going again.
