Plenty of restaurants just blocks away. I watched The Old Oak (2023) and Un Varón (2022) during the latest Cinema Latino showings. Films available are mostly indie, so your mileage will vary on enjoyment but that's part of the charm - you will be hard pressed to find films like these elsewhere. In our late stage capitalist society, I love that you can always find a breath of fresh air at Cinema du Parc where most theatres are mostly showing blockbusters and franchises 24/7.

I went for to see Alien Romulus, we missed the table service window so we had to order at the bar. That's fine, except we got moved to a POS screen which had a long line, and then we had to move to another POS screen that was free and place our popcorn and drink orders with the staff member. The employees were nice but how is this more efficient than continuing table service? It makes anyone late for their movie previews even later and potentially miss the beginning of their movie. This isn't a big deal and wouldn't merit not coming back, but it still doesn't make a lot of sense. The biggest issue I have with this theatre is the lack of immersion. During Alien Romulus, I realized I'd never been to a movie where the sound wasn't loud of clear enough and felt disconnected from the film. I then made this realization when watching Nightmare on Elm Street and The Substance. The lights actually came on during The Substance! That was what killed it for me. Besides this, the layout is so convoluted. You can't go to the second floor and then back to the first to refill your drink or popcorn. You can only leave and circle back to the entrance down the escalator with your ticket in hand. Like what is even going on? I'm done giving this theatre chances and am going elsewhere from now on.

Watching a film here feels like a classy, out of time event. The lobby, the gorgeous ceiling, the balcony, all softly swoon worthy - the restoration was award-winning for a reason. It's wonderful that this place survived so many decades of change and offers such a soul-soothing space to experience the magic of movies. But they just don't show enough of them! The schedule should be packed, as far as I'm concerned, with the best modern and historic cinema has to offer, but all too often it sits empty waiting to be rented out for events. Last night I went to see a film adaptation of Charles Dicken's novel "Oliver Twist." The film,shot on 16mm and released in 1922, was silent with English subtitles. In addition to the film itself, the musical score was played live, in house by a wonderful pianist who played a baby grand piano at the front of the theatre for the entirety of the film - AWESOME. I arrived well before the film commenced as I suspected the theatre would be packed. My prediction couldn't have been more inaccurate. I'd say there about 15 people in the audience. This baffles me. For $7 (student price), this is the best value for anyone who appreciates the cinema or culture in general. GO!
