Really loved my experience at Cinema du Parc. Located in the bottom level of a small mall right outside McGill, it's easily accessible and great for a night of eclectic entertainment. Plenty of restaurants just blocks away. I watched The Old Oak (2023) and Un Varón (2022) during the latest Cinema Latino showings. Films available are mostly indie, so your mileage will vary on enjoyment but that's part of the charm - you will be hard pressed to find films like these elsewhere. In our late stage capitalist society, I love that you can always find a breath of fresh air at Cinema du Parc where most theatres are mostly showing blockbusters and franchises 24/7. read more

During this Covid-19 Pandemic, I've been thinking a lot about how things used to be and how I long for things to be back to normal again. So this is another review in my series of places that I've been to in the past, pre-Covid-19. This review is for Cinéma du Parc. Cinéma du Parc is located in Galeries du Parc and showcases local and international movies, so you won't find the big blockbusters here, but you'll find great independent movies. When I was living in Montreal, I saw lots of movies at Cinéma du Parc because the films they show are my type of films (I love foreign films and indie films), and at the time the ticket prices were less than ticket prices at mainstream/regular movie theatres. However, now the prices are comparable ($13). I really liked the smaller screens/theatres and they were never that busy (I also hate crowds, lol). The place also always smelled strongly of popcorn (others may find it cloying, but I like it). On a visit back to Montreal last fall, I went to Galeries du Parc to recapture a part of my youth. I poked my head into Cinéma du Parc and it's still there and seemingly hasn't changed that much (although I heard that there were some renovations inside and the seats have been replaced). I didn't catch a movie there recently because there wasn't anything screening at the time that caught my eye, and since my visit to Montreal was short, I wanted to spend it eating, shopping, and being introspective about how the city and I have changed so much, lol. Anyhow, with Netflix and all the other video streaming services out there, I'm really glad to see that Cinéma du Parc is still around. I highly recommend it for artsy alternative films. Not sure what the parking situation was back in the day because I just walked there, but now there is underground parking and you can get a discount coupon at the box office where it's only $3 for 3 hours. With covid closing things down left and right, I'm so grateful that the Cinema du Parc is still with us. Over the years, they have quite often managed to stay open by the skin of their teeth, always on the verge of bankruptcy, closing down, change of management etc. I have no idea if they will make it through covid or not but I'm really hoping that they do since real art-house cinemas seem to be going the way of the dodo bird. If Montreal wants to be taken seriously as a real, global cosmopolitan city, it needs to keep it's film culture alive and part of that is the art-house cinema, whether it's playing the latest festival darlings and winners, cult classics, obscure and weighty foreign films or even old reparatory classics and films in regular rotation from acknowledged masters and auteurs like Alfred Hitchcock, Andrei Tarkovsky, Billy Wilder, Satyajit Ray, Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Robert Bresson, Roberto Rossellini, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger etc. Streaming services are also partially to blame, you can now stream and download literally film you want in the comforts of your own home, but as I said in my previous review, there's still something to be said about a real cinematic experience which can't be replicated at home. You know walking into a completely dark theatre, it's completely quiet and you're opening yourself up and in a way, making yourself vulnerable to the images, sounds and stories coming down through the screen, surrounded by complete strangers. Sometimes the emotional impact of a true work of art changes you forever, whether it's a book, a piece of music, a play, a concert performance, a film and you never quite forget it. You not only remember the impressions and the feelings it leaves you with, but you remember where it happened and when. This happened to me when I saw John Duigan's Danny Embling movies at Cinema du Parc's predecessor , Cinema du Paris, when it used to be on Ste. Catherine's street, namely "The Year My Voice Broke" and "Flirting". Or when I watched John Sayle's under seen and under appreciated meditation on war "Men with Guns". This was Latin American magical realism at its best and walking out, I felt like I had just stepped out of some lush dream. I've seen those films many times over the years but the impact just isn't the same as it was the first time seeing them in an art-house cinema like Cinema du Parc. read more

This was my first experience at Cinema du Parc, and it was really great! I've never been to a theatre quite like it before. It's on the bottom floor of a little mall, and you have to go down a flight of stairs so it's underground. Again, have never experienced that before. The theatre itself is clean and the seats are very new, probably the best seats I've ever had in a movie theatre in Canada. The movies they show are unique also, very artsy and international. Prices are similar to a regular theatre (close to the price you would pay at Scotiabank theatre for example). You can buy tickets online which is great, but they also have a nice box office and a nice little concession stand (with muffins and cookies!) overall a great experience! read more

As someone who does most of their groceries at Galeries du Parc, you get curious about seeing a movie here after walking by the cinema every. damn. time. You can smell the popcorn walking down the stairs and you can't help but glance at the movie posters when you stroll through. After seven months, I eventually gave in and watched Parasite here with my gf... it was a BLAST. There's always a unique selection of indie/smaller movies available, and the convenient location inside the Ghetto can't be beat. Prices are reasonable for a theatre, and the relatively flat auditoriums are small and cozy. I'm not sure if it was moreso the movie or the theatre, but I had a really great time. Came here on. Rainy day during our vacation. Loved the theater - seats were new and super comfortable, there was a good mix of food offerings, popcorn, candy, cookies, a couple other baked goods, and a wider variety of drinks than you would find at a chain theater. Love that it's a non-profit and would absolutely go again. Highly recommend. read more

That nostalgic feeling always comes about when I go to Cinema Parc. It's cozy and still has kept its charm after all these years. They mostly showcase international films and host various film festivals. On a positive note, they have done some Renovations and have new red seats. The thing I love most about this theatre is that even on its busiest nights, you still feel as if you're the only one there. With big, comfy seats and unobstructed viewing, it's like watching a movie from the comfort of your own home. The only difference is the giant screen and a requirement that you wear pants. It's also one of the only places on the city where Indy and foreign films are played. I mean, you could always go to the Forum theatre, but it's just not the same experience - Cinema du Parc just has this charm that you don't get with a Cineplex theatre. Plus, it's less expensive. But most importantly, their popcorn is always on point. I'm not sure how they do it, but they've mastered the art of the fluffy pop. And let's be honest, good popcorn is pretty much the main reason that anyone ever goes to the movies. read more

I realy like this place. It reminds me of a small movie theathre back home who only showed "artsy" movies (European, students, fringe etc). The staff is always nice (the bonus of a small theatre) and the movie selection is always unique bringing movies that will force you to think about what you just expirienced. The place also holdes community events ( I came here for GIFF the Geocaching International Film Festival) which gives it extra points in my book read more

Our favorite theatre in Montreal. The best place to go for international films, and cheaper and friendlier than the AMC 22. If you go regularly, it pays to get the discount card which gives you a break on the price. Watch for special events, like student film festivals, director visits. I am a big fan of indie movie houses and am blessed to have many such options where I live in Boston. I wanted to see a Québécois film while I was up in Montreal for a visit and luckily, La Part Du Diable, a fantastic documentary about Montreal in the 70's, was playing. I can see plenty of French-language film in Boston, but it's rare to see anything from Canada (even on DVD), so this was a real treat. The rest of the cinema's program for that week was impressive too - just wished I were staying in town longer! Theater was comfortable with decent sound. The theaters are just the right size, the audiences and staff are passionate about film, and the films they curate are pretty much always going to be more interesting than the list of films on offer at the mega movie chains. cinema du parc is situated on the bottom floor of a building that contains some stores. it's staffed by people that are laid back, courteous, and kind of smooth. i know, i know, but it's true. came here for the polanski retrospective, the nine shorts specifically. the first thing that we noticed when we walked in to the theater was how small the screen was. once the films started, the screen size wasn't an issue. seeing the great 'two men and a bureau' on a big(ger) screen was wonderful and i'm glad i had that experience. seeing "lamps" with all the doll heads and pieces and the babies crying in the background kind of weirded me out enough to want to leave. and i never leave (unless it's death to smoochy, then i just storm right out of there) minus a star because it seems like the only opportunity i will ever have to see 'cul de sac' happened almost a week after i left town. read more

As far as cinemas go - this is not the fanciest but they stand out by not screening the big blockbusters, and instead they are screening high quality foreign films. I really like the option of buying a punch card of 6 movies for 45$. The location is a big plus too, since it's very accessible. I would personally prefer English over French subtitles for movies in other languages, but I guess in Montreal this is what you get (even though it's so close to McGill and the McGill ghetto). Tip - on half-price Tuesdays the place is packed! Come early. Especially if this is the first week for screening the film you are going to watch. Weekends are also crowded, but not as much. read more

Cinema du Parc was a great substitute for a video store when I was living in Montreal. The prices have been rising steadily over the years, alas, but the commitment to a wide range of second-run, hard-to-find classics, and art-house movies hasn't wavered. But they still validate parking at Place du Parc, so it's worth the trip. In addition to watching old prints of Superman 2 and Drunken Master here, I remember a number of fun premieres, like a local horror movie with lots of blatant Christian symbolism (a guy dressed like Jesus got cannibalized by naked women) which played on Easter weekend. There was also a documentary on Kubrick, directed by his longtime producer, which was packed. In both cases, the directors were on hand to answer audience questions afterward. They no longer put out a monthly schedule, which is a shame, since everyone I knew in the neighbourhood would use it as a cheap calendar in their kitchens--and there was enough different stuff playing to justify having it at hand. read more

Montréal's greatest cinema with Anglo films and subtitles. The only knock on it at all is one wishes it were a more attractive place to visit. I love watching films here no matter how uninspiring the office-style atmosphere may be. read more

Cinema du Parc is a wonderful repertory theatre which screens a variety of great films and houses unique film festivals. I always watch something interesting at Cinema du Parc, regardless of my slight skepticism, and I would highly recommend going there over the larger, more corporate, more impersonal theatres. read more
