Once the summer holidays start for students, I'm sure that the theatre will probably be a lot more crowded.

Really, please don't come to this movie theatre. The chairs are too comfy. You won't like it. Stay…read moreaway, please. I'd like to keep this a secret spot. Friends go catch the latest movie elsewhere. I haven't been to the movies with the family for quite a while. Blame it on Netflix, other streaming sources, the comfort of home or generally not enough of time. This said I was generally impressed a few weeks ago, when we decided to go on family outing and had the pleasure of rediscovering this once state of the art theatre! Don't mistake me, this is not a luxury theatre, with reclining seats or drinks & dinner being served, nor does it have huge lanes between you and the next row but there are some key points mentioning. First it is amazingly clean. Second the staff is super friendly and chill. Third even on a Saturdays, the rooms are rarely full - as my fellow yelper mentioned, at times you can almost have the theatre to yourself. Fourth, there are arcades and bumper cars - sweet! And last, the seats. They are so well laid out that you don't have to peak between heads to watch a movie but most importantly soooo comfy! Yep very well stuffed with high density foam that you could sink in and fall asleep almost instantly - well I said almost. Even the armrest have foam, interesting. Anywhoo as usual don't forget to bring a light sweater even during hot summer days as the AC is always blowing at full capacity but otherwise seat back, enjoy and rediscover the pleasure of going to the movies!

REALLY wish that they had a photobooth. That being said, theaters are always clean, staff super nice, and since it's a slower theater you might be lucky enough to have the entire theater to yourself! (We were lucky enough for this on Halloween)

The Guzzo Cinema is the nearest cinema to my home, so I recently organized my son's birthday there…read more I made a request for information via their website and the staff got back to me quite quickly. There are several packages for birthday parties but I chose the basic one for 10 people ($ 200). This package includes admission to the cinema for the movie of your choice (my son had chosen Detective Pikachu), 10 kid combos (popcorn, drink (fruit juice or slush), and treats (M & M or Skittles)) and tokens for arcade games. Unfortunately for me, three of my guests canceled at the last minute but the final price remained unchanged since being based on a package I still payed for 10 people. So basically, they give you a corner in the lobby encircled with ribbon with a few tables and chairs. It's so trivial that twice I had to tell families that they could not sit in that area because of the birthday party. I installed my few decorations and gave them the cake to store in the fridge. The movie theater left something to be desired in terms of cleanliness, the section that was assigned to us was really sticky. As for the tokens, unfortunately, they do not give access to all of the games, the children were somewhat disappointed. Frankly, I'm not a fan of this cinema, every time I go I find that the cleanliness leaves something to be desired, they do not accept payments by debit card which obliges me every time to make cash withdrawals. For comparison, I had already organized a birthday at StarCité Montreal and the service and cleanliness level was much better for the same price range. Needless to say, that I won't be organizing any other birthdays at this place, I was not impressed at all.

This is not your typical movie theatre - it's a redefined cinematic experience!…read more Cinema Moderne moderne provides a unique space where you can enjoy a carefully curated selection of nifty animations, remastered classics, cult movies, documentaries, mainstream or more niche and short films, while enjoying a cup or coffee, glass of wine or cocktail before, during or after the viewing! In fact, pay attention to the programming as filmmakers and specials guests will be present, such as Denis Villeneuve during it's sold out presentation of Blade Runner 2049 last Sunday. A state of the art equipped theatre, with 4K projectors, seats about 54 people and provides daily screenings at 7pm and 9pm and all day on the weekends. The fronting intimate 'café-slash-bar' provides a perfect area to get out of our traditional "web streaming bubble", gather in an intimate yet vibrant environment, socialize and mingle with locals over a beverage or food or your choice at any time or the day. Although it wasn't too busy and people were strolling in and out quite a bit, I could imagine this place getting crowded at peak times. On the menu were an assortment of steamed bao buns including vegetarian, gravlax, chicken or smoked meat and even a breakfast bao which I had the chance to taste with a side salad with glass of fresh pressed orange juice during brunch. There's also a choice cleverly named brews on tap, as well nice wine card and hand crafted cocktails. Located upstairs, is a post-production company called Post-Moderne, where many movies are go through finalisation processes such as colorisation. Overall, the theatre, café-bar, and post-prod company combination is a very smart use of space and very interesting concept to discover. Please do come and experience what the founders, Roxanne Sayegh and Alexandre Domingue, have been researching for so long in Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, New York and Mexico City, and finally transform their dream into reality right here in Montreal - hopefully stating a revolutionary movement that will make pull us cinephiles out of our couches back into the theatre! You have a baby or kids? No worries, this place is very family friendly, especially on Saturday and Sunday mornings. So no excuses - come and join me!

I went for to see Alien Romulus, we missed the table service window so we had to order at the bar. That's fine, except we got moved to a POS screen which had a long line, and then we had to move to another POS screen that was free and place our popcorn and drink orders with the staff member. The employees were nice but how is this more efficient than continuing table service? It makes anyone late for their movie previews even later and potentially miss the beginning of their movie. This isn't a big deal and wouldn't merit not coming back, but it still doesn't make a lot of sense. The biggest issue I have with this theatre is the lack of immersion. During Alien Romulus, I realized I'd never been to a movie where the sound wasn't loud of clear enough and felt disconnected from the film. I then made this realization when watching Nightmare on Elm Street and The Substance. The lights actually came on during The Substance! That was what killed it for me. Besides this, the layout is so convoluted. You can't go to the second floor and then back to the first to refill your drink or popcorn. You can only leave and circle back to the entrance down the escalator with your ticket in hand. Like what is even going on? I'm done giving this theatre chances and am going elsewhere from now on.

Strange Serbian films, Shaw Brothers classics, Russian obscurities, amazing guests, and sometimes live performances make this fest a world leader in the fantastic and weird in cinema. Jeffrey Combs just put on a one-act play here called Nevermore in which he portrayed a spot-on Edgar Allen Poe to a packed house at the gorgeous Rialto Theater. The HP Lovecraft master class conducted by horror director Stuart Gordon and screenwriter Dennis Paoli was sheer awesomeness. In the early days I recall catching great Asian actioners like High Risk and Drunken Master and Italian giallo horror like Deep Red (I was there when Karim Hussain, one of the festival organizers, apologized for a missing reel of the latter in front of the audience, then proceeded to act it out for everyone to provide context). In the years since it's moved to Concordia, I've been privileged to be introduced to so many other great films as world, North American, or Canadian premieres - bigger titles include Haute Tension, Shaun of the Dead, Ju-On, Undead, One Missed Call, Cabin Fever, Big Bad Wolves, and on and on, not to mention dozens of smaller titles that are equally remarkable. That many screenings feature Q&As afterward with cast or crew is just gravy. After a brief return to the Imperial in 2013 as the Concordia theaters underwent some much-needed renovations, FanTasia is back home and better than ever, with more comfortable seating but the same enthusiastic yet respectful and no-attitude crowds. All hail FanTasia and longtime organizer Mitch Davis! Forget best film festival... this is the city's best festival, period.
