What a gem of an old-fashioned movie theatre! We need to keep these places alive by supporting local Québec filmmakers.

This is not your typical movie theatre - it's a redefined cinematic experience!…read more Cinema Moderne moderne provides a unique space where you can enjoy a carefully curated selection of nifty animations, remastered classics, cult movies, documentaries, mainstream or more niche and short films, while enjoying a cup or coffee, glass of wine or cocktail before, during or after the viewing! In fact, pay attention to the programming as filmmakers and specials guests will be present, such as Denis Villeneuve during it's sold out presentation of Blade Runner 2049 last Sunday. A state of the art equipped theatre, with 4K projectors, seats about 54 people and provides daily screenings at 7pm and 9pm and all day on the weekends. The fronting intimate 'café-slash-bar' provides a perfect area to get out of our traditional "web streaming bubble", gather in an intimate yet vibrant environment, socialize and mingle with locals over a beverage or food or your choice at any time or the day. Although it wasn't too busy and people were strolling in and out quite a bit, I could imagine this place getting crowded at peak times. On the menu were an assortment of steamed bao buns including vegetarian, gravlax, chicken or smoked meat and even a breakfast bao which I had the chance to taste with a side salad with glass of fresh pressed orange juice during brunch. There's also a choice cleverly named brews on tap, as well nice wine card and hand crafted cocktails. Located upstairs, is a post-production company called Post-Moderne, where many movies are go through finalisation processes such as colorisation. Overall, the theatre, café-bar, and post-prod company combination is a very smart use of space and very interesting concept to discover. Please do come and experience what the founders, Roxanne Sayegh and Alexandre Domingue, have been researching for so long in Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, New York and Mexico City, and finally transform their dream into reality right here in Montreal - hopefully stating a revolutionary movement that will make pull us cinephiles out of our couches back into the theatre! You have a baby or kids? No worries, this place is very family friendly, especially on Saturday and Sunday mornings. So no excuses - come and join me!

Watching a film here feels like a classy, out of time event. The lobby, the gorgeous ceiling, the balcony, all softly swoon worthy - the restoration was award-winning for a reason. It's wonderful that this place survived so many decades of change and offers such a soul-soothing space to experience the magic of movies. But they just don't show enough of them! The schedule should be packed, as far as I'm concerned, with the best modern and historic cinema has to offer, but all too often it sits empty waiting to be rented out for events. I think you could fill this place 3 times a day with creative programming involving the local university film programs and art galleries... just sayin.

Beautiful chandelier on the ground floor, old world wall sculpures on each side of the screen on the top floor, which can be clearly seen from a very impressive balcony. A pity this theatre is only open during certain film fests and not all year round.

For a start there was no sign at the door when entering informing the customers how the heater is broken. I was only informed when buying my ticket that one of the rooms of the theatre is closed for how cold it is and was told I have to come to a later showing of the movie I wanted to see, for that it is showing in another room where it should be less cold. Even just trying to get popcorn was a mess for there was a long line up for another movie showing and it was only for popcorn, with only one employee helping at the counter. Looking around I could see other employees behind the counter just talking to one another instead of helping, which I'm sorry but find really unprofessional. When it was finally time for me to enter the room to go watch the movie, it was still a disaster. The room was still too cold where I could not feel my legs and had to keep moving around in my chair to get some type of warmth and there was a light that kept on flickering above my head during the movie in a dark room. Finally, at the end of this hard and annoying experience when the movie was finally done and it was time to go home it was the most terrifying moment of my life. Everything in the theatre was shutdown. There were no lights, no employees, and no one else in the theatre. I swear it felt like I was in a horror movie, lock in the theatre with no escape. It was only when I was outside of the theatre that I saw they finally put up signs warning people about how the heater is broken. This was a really bad experience and this cinema needs to do better. I'm sorry but would not recommend coming to this cinema if you want a proper live movie action experience.

Can I just say that this place has changed over the years, from when I was little, to the age I am…read morenow. I'm honestly very disappointed. Despite the good movies that come into the cinema, the rest is just bad... Let's start off with the service. The service: The employees who work at the popcorn desk, or food stand if you wanna call it, are quite unbearable. When you have a lineup of 20 people waiting to get popcorn or candy, and there are five employees that are in a corner, chitchatting away, laughing and giggling. While one of their coworkers is serving 20 people, and those chitchat chatters can clearly see that the line is growing! But yet do nothing about it. That is quite sad. I have worked in customer service before, at a supermarket, and that shit would not fly if that happens to us... Maybe the times have changed, but it's ridiculous. Next is the cleanliness: The bathrooms are absolutely disgusting! Not only does it smell like I walked into a farm full of manure, but it looks like something out of a horror film... Half of the bathrooms don't work, what I assume is dirt on the floor looks like blood or shit... The soap dispensers don't have soap in them, which is just absolutely disgusting because you're entering a bathroom with germs! You'd want to wash off those germs, no? And lastly, the overall cinema: The overall cinema is falling apart, it is going downhill. I don't know how else to put it. The games that they used to have when I was coming to the cinema as a child does not compare to what they have now. You can clearly tell that they're trying very hard to keep it up and running . But that's no longer the case. The bumper cars are never on and there's never anyone to make them availablesort of speak. Which is really sad because when I was a kid, that was the best part of going to the cinema. The games that used to be there are all dead or they eat up your money. If they're not working, you should be putting broken signs on the games. Clearly those games are just there to eat your money and your coins. Not cool at all! Also, why can I not use my cellular device in that building, it's as if we entered a bunker. What if someone gets injured or something happens and I got a call like 911 or something. I'm just gonna let the person die? Anyway, I know it's tough running a business like a movie place, etc. but if you wanted to keep going, you gotta "keep it going". And that's clearly not the case with this cinema. I mean, I still go for the movies, but I don't hype anyone to go for the games or the food. Because it's clearly not the case...

The Guzzo Cinema is the nearest cinema to my home, so I recently organized my son's birthday there…read more I made a request for information via their website and the staff got back to me quite quickly. There are several packages for birthday parties but I chose the basic one for 10 people ($ 200). This package includes admission to the cinema for the movie of your choice (my son had chosen Detective Pikachu), 10 kid combos (popcorn, drink (fruit juice or slush), and treats (M & M or Skittles)) and tokens for arcade games. Unfortunately for me, three of my guests canceled at the last minute but the final price remained unchanged since being based on a package I still payed for 10 people. So basically, they give you a corner in the lobby encircled with ribbon with a few tables and chairs. It's so trivial that twice I had to tell families that they could not sit in that area because of the birthday party. I installed my few decorations and gave them the cake to store in the fridge. The movie theater left something to be desired in terms of cleanliness, the section that was assigned to us was really sticky. As for the tokens, unfortunately, they do not give access to all of the games, the children were somewhat disappointed. Frankly, I'm not a fan of this cinema, every time I go I find that the cleanliness leaves something to be desired, they do not accept payments by debit card which obliges me every time to make cash withdrawals. For comparison, I had already organized a birthday at StarCité Montreal and the service and cleanliness level was much better for the same price range. Needless to say, that I won't be organizing any other birthdays at this place, I was not impressed at all.
