Such a BEAUTIFUL BEACH - highly recommended beach... also with a gift shop with souvenirs and snacks and more   - - -   June, 2025 Visit   - - -   Short Review,   Cinnamon Bay Beach...   ... has an island you can swim / snorkel to... many fish to see closer to the island   ... has a view of Great Thatch, British Virgin Islands   ... has indoor facilities... gift shop, snack bar (indoors and outside), campsites   ... not crowded       - - - Additional information: - - -   My wonderful wife planned a relaxing trip for us to St. John's, US Virgin Islands (just east of Puerto Rico), in June, 2025; we had a great time... such a beautiful island!     We snorkeled two beaches on St. John, and we enjoyed them both.   Cinnamon Bay Beach stuns you with its beautiful colors... the beach has light tan sand, helping make the water is a light green-blue color... stunningly beautiful!!     - - - Why Cinnamon Bay Beach - - -   Most of St. John is a National Park and most of the northern part of the island provides a nearly continuous beach... nearly continuous because peninsulas that extend into the water separate each beach from the other.    We looked at the map and read the reviews and picked Hawksnest and Cinnamon Bay beaches  because they looked more likely to have slightly smaller crowds, as cruise ships apparently visit other beaches (at least when we visited).  When we visited we were not alone and it was also not crowded.   Both are within a couple miles of each other, so while they are similar in overall look and feel - similar color of the water and sand, similar plants, etc., they are unique in what you can see underwater when you're snorkeling, and unique in the views from the beach.     - - - Taxis to and from - - -   To get to and from Cinnamon Bay Beach, you can drive or take a taxi.  The taxis on St. John, at least the ones we saw, are all trucks, with the driver in the cab, and the passengers sitting, open air, in the back... on benches with a roof over our heads.  The taxis run all day and will stop at multiple beaches to drop off and pick up passengers along the way.      - - - Cell / Mobile service - - -   Cell phone service is present, but the signal is a bit weak - 1 to 2 bars of signal strength.      - - - The beach - - -   Even if you never get in the water, the scene is beautiful... the water color is such a beautiful shade of blue...   Enya's "Caribbean Blue" (from 1991 album "Shepherd Moons") was playing in our heads, and was surely inspired by waters like these...   The sand is light and soft   Beautiful green trees and plants along the beach.     - - - The view from the beach - - -   Cinnamon Bay Beach is a beautiful beach and view of the British Virgin Islands' (BVI's) Jost Van Dyke in the distance and Great Thatch island closer... both BVI; St. John's Whistling Cay is visible, closer to the left, and Mary Point, closer to the right; Cinnamon Brach curbs east, and out into the water to a point that becomes Maho Bay and we stayed within Cinnamon Cay..     - - - The water... snorkeling - - -   On any given day, the water quality and aquatic life are things you cannot control.  The day we visited water quality and aquatic life were both goo -  the water was so clear and we saw so many fish, especially as we snorkeled out toward the island... which is much closer than it looks.. 5-10 minutes of calm to quicker leg kicking should get you there.     - - - Snorkeling - what we saw - - -   While snorkeling we were blessed to see: ⁃            a stingray swam by right as we started out !! ⁃            many more parrotfish-like blue-green-purplish fish and others ⁃            on the way back in, two squid!!     - - - Back on the beach - - -   We enjoy laying back and relaxing... and taking photos of our feet as they point toward the sand + surf... and we captured another one here on Cinnamon Bay Beach.   What a great afternoon!     - - - The surf, the lack of on St. John - - -   We have been blessed to visit the Caribbean a couple times and have noticed that there is not much surf, not many waves. On an early trip someone explained that the Caribbean is just at a position in the ocean that the rides are not small; brief internet searches suggest the tide only varies a few inches to a foot or so... such small changes don't lead to many waves. You'll likely see and enjoy hearing waves "lapping at the shore," but you're not likely to do much body surfing... if you have a boogie board, while you could bring it on your flight, you'll likely be better off leaving it at home. - - - Gift Shop - t-shirts, hat pins and more - - - - - - Thank you - - - Thank you to all the park team members who maintain Cinnamon Bay Beach, and to the taxi drivers getting us visitors to and from the beach! ----- ----- ----- read more

Full disclosure I didn't actually swim at this beach but I spent an hour or so here because it's actually a huge beach! The internet says it's one of the most famous ones and I can see why - the water is crystal clear, bright blue (as are most of the other national park beaches lol). It's spacious though, and in addition to the beach itself, there is a snack vendor area where you can buy lunch (like sandwiches and drinks), and a gear rental place for snorkeling etc. They also have a small restaurant adjacent to the campground cafeteria area which does breakfast and dinner (but not lunch). They have pretty clean bathrooms and showers too, and the most parking of all the beaches that I went to. They even had an info booth; the lady there was fairly knowledgeable about the park although I don't think she was an actual ranger (she wasn't in the ranger outfit). There's also a little area right at the entrance to the beach that is part of some ruins, it's a nice photo op spot. Overall this is a great beach! Def recommend. read more

Two people in our group said this was their favorite snorkeling spot of the day (also visited trunk and maho). They enjoyed the coral and vegetation here more than the others, and we got to see about 8 tarpon! Also saw a moon jelly fish, so be on the lookout a few feet under the surface of the water. read more

We love this beach. Love that the shop has organic options! Love the bathrooms and changing stalls. The sand is nice and soft. The water sports and available chair rental is awesome. Food is okay, more junky options like whiz nachos. But at least there is guac! And the guy taking orders is super nice! They have reef safe block and bug spray. The little shop is awesome! Has cute clothing, stuffies and GREAT selection of healthier snacks and drinks. They even have grass fed beef! We love cinnamon bay beach. Good parking there too, though crowded and popular, sometimes you need to sit and wait for a spot to open up, but that seems to be most of the beaches in St John The water is deeper sooner here... making the water much more turquoise and gorgeous. The waves are always "bigger" than a Maho Beach but thats relative, it would be considered the calmest day ever at the jersey shore. Ha. There is always a spot on the beach at Cinnamon because it's deep beach, there can be layers to the family's beach spots like 3 families can fit in a line from water to trees in most areas. read more

Absolutely breathtaking beach! We came here after we couldn't find parking at Trunk Bay and so glad we did. Cinnamon Bay has free entry and is a lot less populated than Trunk Bay. I do recommend arriving early in the morning because parking fills up quick! The water here is stunning! Such a cute secluded beach that we found in between Trunk Bay and Maho Bay. The sand was incredibly soft and fine. Maybe the beach was named after the cinnamon-like sand? LOL The water is very calm and clear. It was crystal clear while swimming, but overall had a nice turquoise finish. Lots of birds feeding on fish in the water, which can be pretty entertaining. You have a nice view of a couple islands nearby and of the British Virgin Islands too. There are ruins at the entrance of the beach that are pretty nice photo ops. Not sure if there are bathrooms or food in the area, but we did see port-a-potties by the entrance. read more

I'm giving an extra star because of the frozen painkiller. It was amazing. The beach itself is of course beautiful but this is one of the most crowded beaches on St John and as with all the other popular beaches, parking sucks. This was my favorite beach at the USVI. It's was beautiful. The water was incredible. It was clear. There was snorkeling with a plethora of coral and sea life. The swimming was perfect. I swam across this bay more than a dozen times during my stay. I even out swam my husband, that never happens. The view is gorgeous. It was a little ruin and an island. We swam around the island. This was probably my favorite beach, even better than Trunk Bay. I say that because it is the longest beach and had the most room to spread out. It also has some good snorkeling and the water is clear and was shallow for a decent amount out. The food options were limited to a food "truck" and a more permanent food "shack," that was not open the day we went. There is covered seating at the "shack" though that is open for general use. Get here early as the parking fills up quick and there is not street parking nearby. People are creative about how and where they park within the lot though. If you come mid-day, like we did, there is a decent amount of turnover and you can get a spot with a short wait. There are two trails across the street as well as some ruins to look at. read more

The facilities were so clean and there were cheap options to rent snorkels and kayaks. We loved the beach itself and there are beautiful, huge black rocks on the right side of the beach. The current was pretty strong, so snorkeling wasn't the best here, but there were trees and shade towards the back of the beach and the view was wonderful. There was a really pretty mural to take pictures in front of, and there are campsites. A few of the locals have said that it can be difficult to catch a taxi back to Cruz Bay, especially the later you plan on leaving. Here is my tale of 2 visits. I mean...my story kind of makes sense...and it's a simple one. But it's interesting as I reflect back on my time here at Cinnamon Bay Beach. One day my mood was down and deflected.....and then the following day I was in good spirits and left on a high note! Cinnamon Bay Beach is one of the most recognized beaches here on the island of St. John and the US Virgin Islands. It's located in the middle of all the action right past iconic Trunk Bay Beach and just before Maho Bay Beach. During both my visits to Cinnamon Bay, although finding a parking spot was difficult and limited, I was fortunate enough to grab a space each time. There was no entrance fee. The first time I came here was midday on a Sunday back at the end of February. There was a lot going on. The beach was filled, there were plenty of tourists hanging out....they even had a volleyball net set up with people playing, along with barbecues and folks mingling. The only problem was....on this day it was very cloudy with a threat of rain in the forecast. For me...I specifically came to Virgin Islands National Park to explore the beaches and appreciate their legendary turquoise blue waters. But because it was so gloomy out, the grand setting of Cinnamon Bay never really came to life without the sun in full bloom. The waters never glistened or reflected translucent blue like I had pictured from looking at photos on the internet. Unfortunately I was let down. I was disappointed. I couldn't truly gauge whether this place was special or not. Earlier in my day, I was left in awe by the scenery of Hawksnest Beach and Trunk Bay, but I couldn't judge if the threatening weather conditions tainted my initial time here. No worries.....the following day I returned here to Cinnamon Bay in the morning time. Well.....what an improvement! Yes....it was the poor weather from yesterday. Today....the sun was shining and the waters were very colorfully clear blue and pristine! Now this was what I was expecting. What a difference the sun made lighting up the beach surroundings! How my entire mood changed the moment I realized Cinnamon Bay was special and did offer majestic blue waters. So...I absolutely had to soak up the setting. I sat down, relaxed, took a swim...and it genuinely felt like I was in paradise! So that's my story. It was basic and may not be memorable for some readers. But for me...at least I felt fulfilled about coming here to Cinnamon Bay Beach. It made for a worthwhile stop and I was able to depart with fond memories. This Cinnamon Bay Beach...or Hawksnest, Trunk Bay and Maho Bay.....they all line up next to each other. One after the next after the next and they comprise the heart of Virgin Islands National Park. You can't go wrong with relaxing at any of them. read more

Cinnamon Bay Beach is stunning. It has beautiful palm trees, white sand and the clearest water that you can imagine. Since you can see the bottom perfectly it sometimes throws me off on how fair out I swam. You think that the bottom is near but it's an illusion. It starts out with a shallow water entry and moves quickly from there. Snorkeling is a must and if you did not bring equipment there is an equipment hut. Cinnamon Bay offers lots of beautiful coral and tropical fish. If you go a little farther out there is the remains of a small plane that is fun to see. You will also find additional water equipment rental, bathrooms with showers and snack options. read more

Definitely the most beautiful beach on St. John. We enjoyed that they had showers, facilities, and drinks. The small trail next to it is beautiful to do before heading down to the beach to cool off. There is not snorkeling to speak of, but it is just breathtakingly clear water to relax and enjoy. read more

This is a gorgeous beach. The snorkeling is not as great as some of the other beaches around St. John, but I'm going to let you in on a little secret: If you head all the way to the left of the beach, you can either hike over those rocks or swim around them and that will put you on Little Cinnamon. It's a slightly smaller beach with slightly better snorkeling that is absolutely open to the public, but it's a lot less crowded (no one was there when we were) because it's a little more difficult to get to. Best of all, we found a weird sand sculpture of a woman's sunburnt backside, replete with seaweed as her hair. I hope it's still there when you go. I'm not going to lie to you, the food at the restaurant leaves something to be desired. You're better off going with something fried and chicken like the chicken fingers (don't worry, they do have honey mustard it's just behind the counter) or the honey-dipped chicken. We got a blackened tuna caesar salad, which felt ambitious for a spare beach stand, and the blackened tuna was solid, but the salad was not even remotely caesar. I refuse to knock a beach for their food though, because really, beach shack food is never that great. read more

We went here towards the end of our trip in the afternoon. Parking can be tough. They have large facilities which were being renovated. Beach itself is large and the water is nice with little or no rocks. Snorkeling wasn't great and could not see much. I would go in am before afternoon winds pick up. read more

I'm giving this five stars but please read the rest of this review! So as you know, a couple of badass female named hurricanes hit the islands in 2017 and as a result many of the spots are still recovering, Cinnamon Bay is most definitely one of them. That being said, the beach itself is still gorgeous in its glory although there seems to be a random table washes up on shore and the unfortunate debris from the trees, there's also a little stagnant body of water in the back likely build up of water as well. The facilities were all under construction, the bathroom facilities in addition to what used to be their food and beverage. This was not a show stopper for us because the beach itself was absolutely beautiful. We were the only ones there as well for most of the time. There are spurts for shady areas and some picnic tables which are still in tact. It was a bit wavy the day we were there and had what I think is rip tide (when two currents meet) but our little one had her floatie on and was quite content. If you are looking for that feeling of seclusion and have a car, make a trip here, you won't be sorry. It's not far from Hawksnest Beach. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. read more

Beautiful is not enough to describe this place..... We've been to a lot of beaches around Virgin Islands but Cinnamon Bay is by far my favorite. The water is so clear that it looks like from our pool water. The sand is so white and fine. Snorkeling is a must if you want to see some stingray. There's no algae on the beach. No fees of whatever sort that you need to pay. There are camping grounds around the area and also shower area to rinse after swimming in the ocean. It is not as crowded as the nearby Trunk Bay. You can purchase water, beer, snacks, even t-shirts in their tiny store located by the beach. Highly suggest checking this beach out. If you haven't fallen in-love in your lifetime....you will with this one. read more

My favorite beach from a short trip to St. Thomas and St John. Worth the car drive, ferry trip, and taxi ride over here. There's taxis at every beach ready to shuttle tourists from one to the other. The drivers heavily push Trunk Bay beach to disembarking ferry passengers, so inquire if they're willing to take you to this one (which is the next stop) They will shout at each other and point you to the right car too; they efficiently manage their trips amongst each other. I think it was about a 10-15 minute thrilling ride from Cruz Bay. The solitary rock formation menaces from the shore; but totally worth the swim over there for some prime snorkeling. You'll be surprised at the copious patches of corals and rocks lurking beneath the waters. You can float through some rock channels. Be careful not to damage the corals. I'd avoid getting close to the rocks if the current is strong. Do watch out for the army of large urchins lurking about. And if you're wading in the shallow waters, look carefully for stingrays (they blend in very well to the sand floor) I didn't see any turtles dangit! But was told Francis Bay had them. Vicious winds hurled the sand all over us. There's not much protection on the beach from it - so just jump in the water already! read more

Gorgeous beach, combined with no entry fee and smaller crowds than Trunk Bay, make this a must-visit stop for the kids. Our family visited at 10:00am and loved the vista of the beach. It's nearly as beautiful as Trunk Bay, but is less crowded with day-trippers and has strong winds (this is THE place for windsurfing on St. John's!). Highly recommended for a visit to a beautiful north shore beach! We snorkeled and relaxed in the morning. By 1pm, however, the winds picked up and made it unpleasant to stay on the beach for my two sons (9 yrs. 7 yrs). We washed the sand off our feet at the washing station (near the restrooms) and enjoyed lunch (hot dogs and burgers) at the Tree Lizard restaurant. Watch out for those aggressive birds! After lunch, we took a short stroll to the historical sugar mill ruins (a 30-minute loop trail). If you have young kids who do not have the patience or stamina to withstand a long hike (e.g., Annaberg ruins), I would recommend the Cinnamon Bay ruins. It gives you a short window on the sugar mill that existed on this location and provides an easy and pleasant nature-walk loop through the forest. My sons liked watching the lizards/birds and finding a giant termite nest. You can also see the ruins of stone terraces that once held sugar cane plants. After viewing the ruins and the 2 tombstones of the estate owners, I recalled seeing the marker for the "slave workers" buried near the Cinnamon Bay beach (just behind the snorkel rental shop). If you look on the pathway along the beach, there's a colorful stone marker that is a sobering reminder of the history of slavery on St. John's. It was fascinating to learn how the proximity of Tortola (BVI) to St. John's and the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act (prohibiting slavery in the British empire) accelerated the decline of the sugar mills. Slaves who escaped to nearby Tortola were automatically granted freedom. Also, one quickly learns as a visitor how precious water has been (and still is) for people living on St. John's (which lacks natural groundwater sources, but uses filtered rainwater). The lack of water made life downright inhospitable for the Danes and slaves. It was also interesting to learn that the United States purchased the U.S. Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1917 out of fear that Germany would acquire them first. It's possible that the deep waters to the north and south of the islands were attractive to Germany during World War I for U-boat development and training. read more

On our trip to St. Thomas, we decided to take a ferry ride to St. John. Cinnamon bay is about a 20 minute uphill drive from the ferry dock. It is a gorgeous beach, wasn't crowded at all and you don't have to pay to get in. They do have a nice bathroom/shower set up. It a great beach to catch some sun and just lay back and relax. U can walk up and down the entire beach, they have a restaurant and a few stores on grounds. They have a nice size parking lot and there are taxi buses available for those that didn't drive. On the walk from the parking lot to the beach you might encounter Bambi and the family. Lol read more

You should definitely visit Cinnamon Bay if you're going to St. John. In my opinion, this is even prettier than Trunk Bay. It's incredibly peaceful, and there is a great view not just looking out into the ocean but looking back from it as well! You have the Islands looking forward and the mountains of St. John looking back. My family also saw a large deer coming down the walkway, so there may be a significant wildlife presence around as well. read more

Pictures always do more justice, but some thoughts: Location: 4 out of 5 Not the closest of the beaches (from the people and car ferry), but if you have a rental car, it's not that much farther of a drive than Trunk Bay. As others have mentioned, this is less crowded and I'd say more enjoyable as well. A free parking lot with no admission (when we went) only sweetens the deal. Amenities: 4 out of 5 Nice commodities here, including changing stalls, showers, a little interpretative center, and what appeared to be a snorkel equipment rental area. There's also these little cabin type buildings that I assume you can "camp" in, as well as a small restaurant. Serenity and View: 5 out of 5 When you consider the lack of crowds and the ability to take a walk up and down the beach without running into that many people, this one takes the cake! Snorkeling Factor: 5 out of 5 One of the nice people in the interpretative center pointed us to the place where we would most likely find sea turtles, and she was spot on. The missus and I followed a sea turtle around for about 20 minutes. They're lazier than you think and not as exciting either. They definitely don't take you to their pack, Finding Nemo style. And yet - it was strangely peaceful to just float around with him/her. There are various fish around to see as well, but not as many coral structures. Overall: 5 out of 5 You really can't go wrong on St. John, and Cinnamon Bay was no exception. Beautiful place, well apportioned, and I got to swim around with a sea turtle for awhile. read more

This is probably my favorite beach on St John....hard to pick a favorite but this one is at the top of the list or close to it! What I love about Cinnamon is it's just as beautiful as Trunk only no admission fee! Its FREE!!! Love it, the water is bright turquoise, the sand is white, and some of my best pictures have come from this beach! Its also very large, so even when the crowds and tourists come, there is a lot of room to spread out and still have your area. I also like that you can get in the water and swim around in the sandy area, or if you want to snorkel there's Cinnamon Cay just off the beach that has reef area to look at....last time there was a young Hawksbill poking around the reef along with lots of fish. Its a great spot for everyone and I really love coming here! There are also TONS of facilities here, which can be handy if needed. Last time I was there they were being renovated, however I'm sure they will be up and running for season soon. There is a restaurant/food court type area, a store, bathroom and shower facilities, and even a campground and various overnight areas to stay in. The store is cute and had some cool souvenirs last time I was there. The food is OK, basic hot dogs, fries, etc type food but it works in a pinch! Usually we just bring our own cooler with food/snacks/soda/beer, much easier and cheaper too! I think there are facilities here for renting watersports equipment too, I think you pass by that little shack area on the way to the beach. We bring our own beach chairs, towels, and snorkel gear, however they might have snorkel gear to rent at the watersports area, I'm not sure. Another great thing about this beach is there are lots of sea grapes and bushes lining the beach area that provide shade if the sun gets to be too much. Lay out in the sun a while, get in the water, come back and sit in the shade, go snorkeling, this beach really has something for everyone! I really love it here, and has to be one of the most beautiful and picturesque on the island. I definitely recommend it for a wonderful beach day!! read more

This beach loses a solitary star for the restaurant that accompanies it, which is something of a joke. So let me harp on that very briefly. Should you decide to dine there, understand that you'll order at a register helmed by all of one person (a second showed up later, but by then it was a tragedy), and pick up your plate from a kitchen staffed by all of one person (who was, as it turned out, very kind, as opposed to the counter intelligence which was, honestly, about the worst I'd ever encountered). The blackened mahi mahi was decent. But what more can be said about the beach other than pure astonishment, from the moment we arrived to the sunburnt hour of our departure. Layer that sunblock on every 30 minutes, at a minimum, especially if you're pasty white folk like our clan. There's not much to see snorkeling, but that's not what this beach is about.
