Penny Square Barn

Penny Square Barn

(1 review)

I had my wedding reception in Penny Square Barn. What an amazing venue this was for a wedding…read morereception. The barn is owned by the fabulous farmer Bruno and Gill, such wonderful people! I stayed with Bruno and Gill for B&B and one of my fondest memories is having a bottle of vino and a gas with Gill in the kitchen. Honestly Batcombe is just a fantastic place with some amazing friendly, interesting people. Bruno had just put in toilets when we got married here which was fantastic and the barn had not been used all winter so we had a lot of cleaning up to do. Its no frills but it makes it for economic sense as a wedding venue if you have the vision and want to get married in a glorious location. The main barn itself is gorgeously rustic, just put some dichroic floods as a backdrop and it becomes wonderfully atmospheric. We had a friend climb around like a monkey and do an amazing job on lighting and hung long swathes of black fabric over the not so pretty metal door entrance to the barn. In the smaller barn annex we also hung fabric to disguise the galvanised roof. We were able to have a fire going outside and allowed to have fireworks (before 10pm of course) and a flamethrowing fire engine. The villagers were just fantastic and welcoming and Bruno was an absolute star! Not only was he a bell-ringer, but he ran the bar at the village hall and made sure we had enough fuel to run the genny for the weekend. Barn does get cold at night so its worth renting a couple of space heaters. We got a TENS from Mendip council and ran our own bar which was fab. This is a beautiful quiet village so its not the spot to pound music late into the night as noise does carry but its a perfect venue for an event such as a wedding in the summer.

The Orangery is the stunning and beautiful new restaurant in the grounds of Blenheim Palace,…read moreoverlooking the Italian Gardens. All their food is from local produce so tastes really fresh. We had the two course seasonal lunch menu for £18.50 which consisted of a delicious starter of gnocchi with spinach and parmesan, and a mains of braised cheeks with sprouting broccoli, onions and mash. All beautifully presented and extremely tasty. My friend's daughter had the Slow Braised Cotswold Beef with sprouting broccoli and thin cut chips with rosemary which was also extremely tasty. We finished the meal with a dessert of "Blenheim Mess" of boozy berries with local cream and Estate lavender meringue. This was refreshing and was a feast for the taste buds. We noticed many other diners were having the afternoon tea, which looked really good. The busboy was diligent to fill our water glasses and remove finished plates. However, the service could be a bit better from the waitress. We had difficulty understanding the waitress that served us as her English was not that good. Although the head waiter that greeted us on arrival, and escorted us to the table, was much better in answering our questions and explaining the menu. All in all a lovely meal in beautiful, relaxed surroundings, at a reasonable price. Please note that a Park and Gardens ticket or valid Annual Pass is required to dine in the Orangery Restaurant. Book your tickets online in advance or on the day of your visit.

Missenden Abbey - Missenden Abbey frontage

Missenden Abbey

Missenden Abbey is a wedding and conference venue located in the picturesque village of Great…read moreMissenden. The abbey was founded by Augustinian monks in 1133, and dissolved in 1538. The church was demolished soon after, but a country house was built around the cloister in 1574. The house was rebuilt from over the years, attaining it's present "Gothick" form in the early 19th Century. Its last family owners sold it to Buckingham County Council in 1946 for use as a college. The building was badly damaged by fire in 1985 and subsequently rebuilt. It was acquired by Buckingham New University in the 1990s. The main building retains much of its character externally, but internally the gothic style has been reproduced with clean, modern lines and light wood, and so feels much like any other conference venue, albeit with some impressively spacious rooms. There are several substantial annexes with guest accommodation and more meeting rooms, all with the feel of a 1980s higher education institution - lots of glass, wood, endless corridors and little planted courtyards. Bedrooms are comfortable and modern. I only had one set of meals there: nice enough, but fairly average conference fare. Staff were charming and very obliging throughout. The grounds are nice, albeit less extensive than you might expect for a former country house, but come with sweeping views east over open countryside. There's on site parking and the venue is a ten minute walk from Great Missenden railway station.
