You can buy snacks at the ticket desk and popcorn and drinks at the bar which you bring in to the cinema. Each chair has its own mini table; conference seat style. Was rather nice to have a beer and pretzels while watching a film. A significantly nicer experience than the big cinemas. Only niggle (and why I gave 4, rather than 5 stars) was that it was incredibly hot and stuffy so some work for them to do on the air conditioning.

Prices are pretty typical, but the good value food and drink makes you feel you're getting a good deal: Full price £7.00 Members £5.50 Child £5.00 Concessions £6.00 Weekday performances before 5pm are about £1 less for the higher price range. You can see some of the normal films that are out in mainstream cinemas, if the Odeon's screening times are inconvenient or you fancy a smaller screen. Of course, the main attraction is the great range of foreign films (French films most Tuesdays), which are subtitled for non-linguists; period films, art films and independent documentaries. A word of warning: Don't assume that just because the films are obscure, you can rock up at the last minute and get in; films are often sold out and it's a good idea to book in advance if there aren't many showings. Finally: the best thing - check out the funky toilet seats and neon lighting. A great addition to the other-worldy experience!

It's in lovely Jericho, an Oxford neighbourhood with alot of character and energy. This cinema is definitely a fixture in the neighbourhood, and is loved by all (or so my partner tells me). I've visited this cinema on several occasions and always enjoyed it! I guess as a North american, it's still novelty for me to visit wee community cinemas, as well as being able to get a proper (alcoholic) drink before the show. They frequently play indie & foreign films, as well, so they get extra brownie points in my book. :)

Going to the cinema in Oxford city centre is not particularly fun, especially on a weekend. This…read moreplace is cramped, expensive, and you need to book early to have any chance of getting a ticket. The ticket booths in the cinema are quite small and so queues develop quickly, and the small size of the cinema means that there isn't a huge amount of choice. Still, it's the only cinema in the centre of Oxford, so if you want to see a film and can't be bothered to walk up to Jericho or down Cowley Road, or to drive to one of the out-of-town places, this is your only option.

When I…read morewas 3 or 4 years old, I was a massive fan of Nik Kershaw - I still am, actually, he's one of my top 10, if not top 5. I dragged my mother to the concert. I was so tiny, they put me up on stage briefly. Good memories, although I mainly only recall it by looking at pictures. Hazy and foggy and just a little bit out of reach, buried in my subconscious. Over the years, I saw other bands here when I was older, such as a very memorable Erasure concert. But nothing will ever compare to being 3 or 4 years old, being picked up and put onstage because I was so tiny, watching my hero Nik Kershaw on stage when he was at the height of his popularity. It's a lovely theatre... it's changed a lot, but is still well worth the high ratings that it gets. And this is review #1983 that I have written.

It's certainly a cut above the rest, with ushers, several bars, a grand interior and a huge stage. However, it feels a little more like going to the cinema than a night out at the theatre. We joined a disorganised queue of people trying to get in, then dodged our way to our seats. There was no comfy reception area to chat in, and it was very croweded, so we went straight in. The ushers were helpful and our seats had a good view. They had binoculars in the stalls so it caters well for the short-sighted, although the stalls don't slop quite enough for the short-bodied to see over tall people in front. There was no interval, so I didn't sample the bars, but I've heard they're not fanastic. Still, I enjoyed the show and as the others have said, it really does have an amazing line-up every year. It gets big shows in at reasonable prices and is well worth going to.

There are regular film showings, with some French classics and lesser-known European cinema; most screenings are free and the listings can be found on the website. However, the main events put on by the Maison Francaise are the academic seminars and lectures. Famous writers, great academics and political figures gather regularly (usually at least one event a week) for one-off talks, day-long seminars and other sorts of presentation. Everyone is usually welcome to attend, although it's best to sign up to the newsletter to find out last-minute changes and precise details. There are even French plays held from time to time, although it's not all French - there have been Eastern European events, Polish authors and discussions on worldwide politics.

This is one of my favourite places to go for a night's entertainment - there's a good helping of…read moredecently put together student productions on and the tickets are usually about the same price as a cinema ticket, so it's good value. The theatre is very comfortable and is only a small one so you can see everything that is going on no matter where you sit. Watch out for the tickets at the front though as you'll end up sat on the same level as the stage, which can be a bit uncomfortable when the actors are right in front of you. The productions I've seen here have been good - the theatre has quite a few seats so if the play wouldn't pull in the crowd, they wouldn't put it on here. Worth a visit.
