We stopped here on our way to Madison from MN and we were not disappointed! My husband and I both had chimichangas. Beef for me, vegetarian for him. Everything was well-prepared with generous portions and quality ingredients. The staff were all very nice and the decor was vibrant and pleasing. Walking in, I was excited this place may actually be one of the decent restaurants in BRF. The decor is festive & authentic, and clearly a lot of effort was put into it. After being seated, chips & salsa were served immediately and they were delicious. Unfortunately the positive review ends there. We ordered a pitcher of margaritas next. The pitcher came with a bunch of lemons in it, NO ICE, nor was their ice in the warm glasses brought with it. Yum. Our entrees came and we immediately tasted that the cheese they used in both our dishes was mozzarella, and the red enchilada sauce may as well have been marinara. I'll tell ya one thing as someone visiting from way (way) out of town, this place was exactly what I'd expect a Mexican restaurant in BRF to be like. Food was just OK. The service was horrible and there was barely anyone in the restaraunt. It took someone forever to come to our table. We ordered drinks and I ordered queso. The server brought the queso out and we still had no chips and salsa. We went to the counter to pay our bill; we stood there and stood there. I noticed there was a waitress sitting cleaning menus in a booth right next to us. I asked her if she could ring us out, she said, "after I finish this." Good place overall with great veggie fajitas. The fajitas were made fresh, not oily, and cooked well. It has a good array of vegetables and we both liked it. We ordered ordered chips with queso and guacamole and they didn't give us any chips for the guacamole so we had to go up and ask someone if we could get some chips. The food was pretty mid but it awokend my cousin Ana's tastebuds. My cousin Ana wich is also known as Wisconsin most famous cheese critic was non stop yapping about how good the place was and she heavily enjoyed her Al pastor . The one and only small problem was the y gave me beans that I asked to be put miles away from my plate were thrown right on. The music was honesty fire and I started salsa dancing with one of the employees because how chill they are. Omg I would totally reccomend this place if your driving by. This will definitely keep my stomach full for the rest of this boring car ride with my cousins that heavily irritate me. Do not buy their gift certificates...they put a one time use stamp on them so you do not get change back. We had a 50 dollar gift certificate from friends and our bill was 39 dollars. They refused to give us the 11 dollars back or mark the gift card as partially used. They said the only thing we could do was order something more to go. The manager claimed to call the owner who supposedly lived upstairs, but, she refused to come talk to us. Not going back. Beware of this business. They are stealing the balances of people's gift cards. read more

I stopped in earlier this evening, staying nearby during a cross-country drive. The place was warm and inviting, brightly decorated with countless iconic Mexican images carved into the furniture. I ordered the Enchilada Verde: a fine and flavorful dish with all of the usual trimmings, complemented by a mango Jarrito. Terrific. read more

High sounding reviewers from elite Mexican outposts may think that the food here is not authentic, but with the diaspora of Mexicans all around the U.S., there are mom and pop places opening in every nook and cranny and each has as much claim to authenticity as does any other restaurant run by a Mexican family. Black River Falls is lucky to have such a place. My wife and I had tamales and enchiladas and we've eaten them all around Mexico and Texas for 23 years. I had lunch here at 12:30. On the lunch menu, the had "Fajita Taco Salad" for $8.99. So I ordered "Fajita Taco Salad". It was delicious. However when the bill arrived, I was charged for the dinner "Fajita Taco Salad" for $12.99. I didn't even see this item listed on the menu because I only looked at the lunch menu. I asked the server why my meal was not $8.99 and she said that she rang it in for the dinner price. I explained that it is lunch - I ordered off the lunch menu - I had no idea there was dinner item with the same name - and the server never asked me if I wanted the lunch or dinner "Fajita Taco Salad". The server and manager both REFUSED to give me the lunch price! Very poor service that I had to pay for THEIR mistake by not asking me if I wanted the lunch salad or the dinner one (that I didn't even know existed)! I will never return. It's been a long time since I've visited Cinco de Mayo. I have to say I was disappointed in my dinner. I ordered the Chile Verde. It was very salty (as pork is salty already) and the pork had a lot of fat on it. I understand the fat is was gives any meat its flavor but this meat had too much fat on. Wow, where do I begin? First ill say I didn't have high expectations for authentic mexican in black river falls but what I encountered turned out to be far worse than I imagined. I had a margarita that tasted like syrup on the rocks. After waiting for about forty minutes I got my burrito if you can call it that. It was a soggy tortilla filled with ground beef completely devoid of the most basic seasoning......that's it. Maybe their interpretation of a burrito is just ground beef but this was the first time I've seen it and hope it's the last. I've never had a bad meal here, and I can't say the same for the majority of the other restaurants in the area. I usually get fajitas or quesadillas. The portions are big and you always have food to take home for another meal. I've taken family and friends here and they've always enjoyed the food too. We lived in La Crosse previously and this is just as good and usually better than the Mexican restaurants in La Crosse. The staff is always nice.
