I went Friday night.
This was my first time at Cincitalia, and I was expecting a much bigger festival with much bigger crowds, taking up (I had figured) at least half the park. Not so much. Probably not more than an 8th (on the southeast corner of the park) was filled with booths and people
The food was decent - I tried 4 different items - but the real sruprise, and not a good one, was that the red sauce was uniformly mundane, I had expectations of long simmered sauces redolent with fresh herbs and spices, handed down through generations from grandmother to child, and each red sauce I tried was really not much better than from a jar at the grocery store
My least favorite item was the spiedies. There was little to no evidence that the meats had been marinated as is done in Binghampton, and they had been cooked and set aside in some kind of warming tray - not fresh off the grill. They were tiny, and the lamb tasted so much like beef that I think they did actually use beef in place of lamb
The pizza wheel - basically a oversized garlic knot twisted with pepperoni, from 5 Boroughs Pizza, was tasty but also a greasy mess
The sausage and peppers and onion sandwich was good, but the roll they used was of low quality, essentially a larger than normal kroger brand hot dog bun, and it fel apart so quickly I basically discarded it and used a knife and fork on the rest
The best item was the first one I tried, the arancini. Creamy interior, crunchy exterior, stuffed with a mozerrella and rice mixture, delicious.
I was disppointed not so see more italian pastries in evidence. I walked around twice, and there wasn't even any cannoli available. There was no italian lemon ice. No biscotti. There were a couple of booths selling what appeared to be identically-sourced tiramisu, and a funnel cake trailer that I would guess just goes to every festival, italian or not.
Overall, I was unimpressed, and can't see myself returning again read more
