A slice of Americana and a must do event for any westsider, and maybe even for those on the east too! :) Lewis aptly describes the full spread of entertainment available so I'll just add in a few extra bits of info. I've probably been to this more times than I could count as my g-ma used to live adjacent to the park, which meant free admission, awesome. I remember the petting zoo animals and that universal funky perfume smell of hay, mud, and cotton candy that wafts through the air like it was yesterday.
If you can't make it to the fair, at least try to watch the parade. It kicks off the fair and is a great event for all ages. Although apparently the most recent one stopped allowing participants to throw candy at spectators. I think they still hand them out though.
Okay, so, there are running events in conjunction: a one mile run and then a full fledged 5K. I ran both and enjoyed the short and longer aspects, however I did not enjoy my times, oh well. This year they also allowed you to walk/run with your dog.
Parking for the fair can be difficult if you are unfamiliar with the area, some streets are utterly packed with cars and some residents purposely park in the middle of a spot that would have fit two cars. Carpool and/or be prepared to walk a bit.
So, in addition to all that Lewis mentioned, there are also craft shows (everything from quilts to photography) , cooking demos and live music to entertain. This is also the best place to get the item found in most westsider's cabinets, a Steve Chabot cup. Even if you don't know/like him, you kinda need one.
I really enjoy walking around and people watching at events like this.
So, next year keep your eyes peeled and try to make it to either the parade, fair, or even one of the runs. Go 'merica! read more
