He looked directly at us, proudly displayed a syringe, pantomimed injecting himself, and continued on his merry way to what I can only assume was either his next stop... or his final one. At that point, he had effectively marked his territory, and we collectively decided that risking a pastry wasn't worth becoming part of the neighborhood scenery. We promptly backed out and left. I'm sure the bakery may make great pastries, but first impressions matter. If customers are greeted by open fences, apparent drug activity, and an environment that feels unsafe before they even park, it's hard to justify staying. Hopefully the business and property owners can work with the city to address the surrounding conditions, because no croissant is worth wondering whether you're about to witness an episode of Cops.

We also ordered the latte, Americano, and iced coffee. Ended up paying $27 before tip which was reasonable for a decent breakfast. The food was not great but it was quite good and the espresso drinks were very food and rivals the best coffee in San Francisco. Please note that you have to ring the bell in order to be let in, so wait a little bit before going away if you get there during regular business hours. Also, besides the wall menu, they have a regular menu that is actually cheaper than the board.

After Hurricane Maria (2017), like many other stores in Perto Rico, this place closed down. I am so happy that they were able to reopen. This is a local favorite. This is my favorite spot to order lunch when I am home visiting my parents. You can check their facebook page (Cafe del Pueblo) to see their daily lunch menu. I walk here with my mom and order to-go from the hot bar. For about $20 or less we get enough food for 4 or 5 people. It's also a great opportunity to try a bunch of different delicious Puertorrican foods! I would suggest going a bit early during the week, the lunch line can get long.

I went one day & had an egg & bacon hot pressed bread(pan tostado) for breakfast. Then had baked chicken w/ white rice & beans for lunch. The next day I had pasteles. Pasteles is a big deal in PR around this time & the in the U.S. as well for Puerto Ricans. Anyone can enjoy though. In Puerto Rico, pasteles are a cherished culinary recipe, especially around Christmas-time. The masa consists of typically grated green bananas, green plantains, white yautías,potatoes,and tropical pumpkins(known as calabazas). It is seasoned with liquid from the meat mixture and annatto oil.The meat is prepared as a stew and usually is chicken or pork. Pasteles are wrapped in banana leaves & then paper stringed up. It is my favorite PR dish. Some people put ketchup or hot sauce on it. I don't I think it takes away the flavor. The people that work here are very nice & friendly. They don't speak English though. The spot has a lot of Latino vibes & Puerto Rican decor. There is always salsa playing on the speakers. I love this place! Obviously if I went more than 2 times lol.
