I got my hands on a single front seat cover for a 1970 VW Bug driver's chair(they are sold in pairs but somebody else only needed one so I got the spare). I ask Chuy if he'd be willing to rebuild the chaire and put the cover on, and he said sure. Bring It down. So I dropped it off on Wednesday 3rd Feb, and and on Thursday 4th Feb got the call that he had finished! I picked it up on Friday, installed it on Saturday and it was ready for the big reveal on Sunday 7th. Unforturnately I didn't think to take a before photo. I came to Chuy's with an unusual request to re-upholster my vintage chrome dinette chairs I inherited from my grandparents. They seats were all ripped but otherwise in good condition. I brought my Toyota Tacoma 2010 I just bought for my son who is 33 and I wanted everything to be perfect. The truck was already in great condition but had a little rip on the drivers side seat. I was recommended by G&F auto repair, my long time technicians for my cars for years...who could repair the zipper on my soft top Jeep Wrangler. Go to Chuy's Upholstery. I showed Chuy's , a very like-able guy, the problem. He said no problem. Setting a date to have the zipper replaced, it was done in about 3 hours. It was a lot of sewing, replacing the old broken zipper with the new one. Chuy's real skill is reupholstering auto seats. His work is exacting and no short cuts. Classic cars are a specialty. MY 1993 MIATA has a zippered back window that must be unzipped for air and to lower the ragtop. But the ZIPPER broke. No "hack" seemed to work. I called my mechanic and asked for a recommendation. CHUY'S Upholstery was superb. I called for information and drove there for an assessment. Could he replace the zipper or would I need to replace the top??? Chuy was professional, cordially and had the part. He estimated 45 minutes (it was done in less time). There was an outdoor picnic table on the street where I could wait. Marin county was still operating in Covid Cautious mode. He wore a mask and understood why I waited outside the door of his office. The price was reasonable and the work was excellent. I called to see if they could reupholster a motorcycle seat, and it was no problem. Chuy himself answered the phone and told me to bring in the seat. Tucked in the corner of the industrial side of San Rafael, it can be a bit difficult to spot, but there is signage out front. Chuy was friendly, accommodating, and based on some of what I saw there, it would appear that vehicle upholstery is his specialty. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking to re-cover auto or motorcycle seats, etc. To re-cover my seat, he only charged me $20. I first bought a kit online and had him install it.... The second time around I had him build the seats himself and they turned our much better. than the supposed best seat kits I had order. I took my 1973 VW Bug to Jose to have the headliner replaced. When I picked it up today, my jaw dropped. Not only did he remove & replace the headliner, but he replaced the carpeting in the back window; put in a new, tinted at the top windshield, crystal clear; fixed the lever on the driver's seat so it easily tilts forward now, so you can get into the backseat easily; replaced the upholstery on the door side of the driver's seat; & restored the buzzer which activates when the doors are open. It hasn't worked for over 18 years. And, he wouldn't accept anything for the extra work he did. I wish we had discovered Chuy's earlier before we had other upholstery done. read more

Chuy is a master craftsman and goes above and beyond to deliver. I had him redo the front and rear seats in my '87 Jag. The front driver's seat was really, really bad. The leather had dried out, was cracked and torn, and there was foam missing. In addition to doing an excellent job color matching, he took the front seats down to the springs and rebuilt them. Then he did all the seat piping in leather; the original seats had vinyl piping. Then he redid the center console (which also was badly cracked), not in vinyl like it came from the factory, but in leather to match the seats. He's the type of guy who takes great pride in his work, and it sure does show! As he told me, he tries to do his very best on each job and that is reflected in the excellent results. This is the benefit of a one-man shop where he can control quality from start to finish. I'm going to use him again to reupholster some furniture. In the meantime I have that wonderful new-car smell to enjoy! read more
