One of my favorite stores in all of LA! I've visited innumerable times, and every visit is like a big shot of serotonin. The store has the cutest, most creative gifts. They offer clothing with beautiful graphics, red envelopes, stickers, mugs, prints, postcards, keychains, and so much more. One of my favorite parts of this store is that they frequently change their theme and release related merch. I never know what theme I'll get to explore when I visit. For instance, their theme right now is "mooncake diner," and they have a whole collection of diner graphics! I vividly remember when they launched their space theme and hung up "planet" lanterns with mini astronauts floating around the store ceiling. In the past, I've come for art galleries here. The store not only has their own adorable merch but also supports local artists, which is incredible. super cute shop nestled inside the red lantern area of chinatown! the ppl who run the store are attentive and kind. they have adorable chunky ohtani and dodgers themed stickers, sweatshirts, t-shirts and stadium bags. the stickers are high quality and great for water bottles. i also love their chunky sailor moon line. their red envelope collection is soooo LA. my sister has gotten me some over the years and i was amazed at the collection they have, very clever and creative designs. read more

Been here every chance I get whenever I'm in Chinatown. Great local gallery spot of art specifically speaking to the American Asian experience! It's next to the now defunct Hop Louie restaurant. There are local artists items, prints, clothes, stickers, and cups you can buy to support AAPI artists! Places to note are Thank you coffee and paper plantco. As well a the iconic Phoenix bakery and Wonder bakery and the small galleries and stores along the plazas. And at night, quiet neon lights the space. read more

I totally felt missed out knowing that I just figured out about The Chunky Things existence after it has been here for more than a year. It's such hidden gem in Chinatown and I was so impressed by the creative minds behind the store, who're none than the couple owning it. Taking care of the store on his own, he's also great representative of perfect hospitality, being super helpful assisting this indecisive first-time customer. Providing tons of different apparel styles from T-shirt, Crop tees, hoodies, and jumpers; they also offered different sizes including for kids starting from 2 YO! The design selections was certainly amusing as they literally have massive collections, all of which were just extremely cute and innovative. He even said that they usually rolled out new ones on a monthly basis, and sometimes they occasionally brought back something from the past just like what they recently did for their anniversary celebration. I did find some of them also tried to bring out the currently in-hype topics. I found it not only perfect for self-wear, but also for gifts. I really loved the idea that you could pick your choice of clothing, your size and color, then the design you fancied for them to print it fresh on the spot; and what's more mind-blowing was you only needed to wait for 5min-ish to get everything done for you to bring back home. For the clothing material and the creative design, the price tag was pretty reasonable. Even if you're not into clothing, worry not as they did have caps, wall decorations, stickers, tote bags, mugs, postcards, and even cup holders! Be prepared to spend some money here! Chunky is an awesome API owned shop filled with tons of unique gifts consisting of home decor, jewelry, art prints, and more! This shop is located nearby the Hop Louie restaurant. Once you walk in, you'll be greeted by a burst of color from all the amazing products they have curated. The staff here are very friendly and welcoming. My favorite things to buy here are their art prints because I love to support local API artists. I really enjoyed stopping by Chunky Gifts, which is located right in Chinatown Central Plaza. They carry home goods, original art by AAPI artists, jewelry, and other high-quality, unique items by independent businesses. I was happy to see that they stock Emme candles, which come in an assortment of Asian-inspired scents (think boba, ube, calamansi, and muscat grape). During the summer, they also have a Chunky Tea Club program where you can pre-order boxes of treats made by local AAPI bakers (like bby bakeshop!) that are paired with Chunky's home-brewed tea. I have been consuming green tea regularly for over 15 years and I can say without a doubt that every tea I have purchased here has been incredible! I recently ran out of the organic strawberry green tea that I had purchased at Chunky Gifts (which is AMAZING) and I needed to get another bag. So I popped back into Chucky yesterday to grab more strawberry tea. I was immediately greeted by the very friendly gal who always remembers me and is always happy to see me. The art show, "I'm From Here" features art from Asian Americans in Los Angeles. A variety of styles are represented. Of course, I liked the paintings featuring pineapple buns, noodles, buns, and boba drinks. The red envelopes are handmade and have a modern urban feel - LA Dodgers caps, boba drinks, dumplings, the ox (since it's Year of the Ox), etc. They also have stickers and sell chili oil (kinda random but the chili oil comes in handy for CNY feasting). Chunky Gifts is a stationary / art print store nestled amongst relics of old LA Chinatown (Hop Louie next door) and stores selling knick knacks and curiosities to passerby tourists. Each time we go there, we find new stickers / postcards to buy to add into our journals. There's also small and big art prints, home goods, and gifts that are uniquely designed by independent artists and/or in-house with the Chunky design style. Feels like walking into a smaller sized Giant Robot (Sawtelle) -- it's a blend of an art gallery and a gift shop rolled in 1. Can't wait to see what new things we find next time. read more

Photos don't do these red envelopes justice, they look so much better in person! The paper is really sturdy, textured and nice quality. I have always saved the red envelopes I've received in the past, but these Chunky Paper envelopes were definitely made to last. I bought an obscene amount for the kids in my huge family and our parents (some designs I forgot to capture before mailing out). It's our first time giving red envelopes and I'm super excited to have something really special to gift. The husband and wife duo behind Chunky Paper hand-make each envelope themselves. They ran out of some of the designs I wanted and generously offered to make them on the spot for me. Seems a bit labor intensive, so I'm really grateful they did that for me. I LOVE chunky gifts. I first discovered them last year when I participated in a tea-time collab with a bakery on Eventbrite of all places. Now, it's my go-to stop for gifts since I found out that they're not exactly a tea shop, but an amazing collective of AAPI art and goods! From stickers to jewelry to clothes and books, this small store has it all. Their workers are super friendly, give great suggestions, and make you feel like you're in a familiar place. I always stop by when I'm in Chinatown and I hope this place never goes out of business (a little surprised that even sitting on this review for a year there's still only 17 reviews!).
