The burgers did not disappoint - big, juicy and a lot to choose from. The homemade fries were a little overlooked and needed seasoning but they had great potential. The breakfast looked good but we wanted to try the burgers since they were voted the best in Iowa. The old fashioned milkshakes were amazing! The prices were average but the service was a little slow and not real friendly. I would eat here again when we pass through (there's not many choices between Des Moines and Omaha on I-80) but wouldn't make a trip out of my way just for it. read more

This was a wonderful stop with the best breakfast we have had in a while. My husband cannot stop raving about how good the sausage was, how good the coffee was. Everything we had was excellent! There was no sign for this on the highway so we were so pleasantly surprised to find this place. I don't know if we will ever be back in Adair Iowa but if we are we will stop in again. On a road trip from California to Chicago. We stopped here on 08/15, due to the good reviews. When we walked in, the hostess immediately made us feel uncomfortable. There were 6 of us and she let out a sigh and said well let's see where we put you. There were only 3 other tables being occupied. Luckily a very friendly waitress came up and said she would take us. The food was okay. The chicken fried steak was the best out of anything we ordered. Part of the issue here was the atmosphere created by the other patrons. It was made very clear to us by continued staring, shaking of heads and sneers , that we were not their typical customer. We were extremely uncomfortable, we quickly ate and got out of there. So if you are not light skinned with colored eyes, you might want to skip this place and head into the city instead. We were polite and apologetic but she continued to give us a hard time about NON-CHOICES. Upon leaving and paying, she scoffed in front of one of my party members and chucked her receipt over her shoulder, visibly upset and saying "only 20%? are you kidding me?!" The food was fine. Voted "Best Burger in Iowa" by the Iowa Beef Association. And they deserve it! The homemade fries are crispy and delicious. They are also endless with every burger. They have an all you can eat buffet every Sunday that is well worth he $9. The first Saturday of every month is Prime Rib. Delicious! Wait staff is courteous and attentive. You couldn't ask for a better dinning experience from a small town establishment. It's big city dinning with small town pricing. I have yet to have a bad meal there. We stopped here after a softball game last night at 8:50 when they closed at 9pm. The staff graciously welcomed us and didn't blink an eye. Our server was sweet, brought our drinks quickly and was very attentive. The food was wonderful. Our group of 5 were all very impressed by each dish. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak, which came with plenty of beef and a huge helping of grilled veggies. My kids were so excited they could order breakfast at 9pm, yummy pancakes and biscuits and gravy included! My in laws live nearby and we wholeheartedly recommended it to them! read more

Lucky enough to happen upon this place while passing through on I-80. Excellent service. We were given a whole pot of the best coffee we had on our month long road trip!!! Everything looked good on the menu, but we went with the chuck wagon burger and bourbon burger. We ordered the jack Daniels burger initially but they were out of the sauce and were making more but it was not done, which tells me their food is good enough to run out of things and they make it fresh which is appealing to me. Our burgers were divine and the fries just as good. You can taste the real quality ingredients.We had no idea they are rated the #1 burger in Iowa, but we see why now! And great value! We could only eat half, the burgers were so big! We took the other half and ate it on the road. So we ate well that day for 25 bucks. Not on purpose. We were just so full!! The place was very clean and homey. You can tell everyone there takes pride in their work. We will be sure to stop at Chuckwagon when passing through again and encourage others too. It was such a relief to have such fantastic food in a convenient, relaxing location right off the freeway. Just stopped for gas and found this place for lunch. If you want a GOOD IOWA tenderloin stop here. It is hand cut and pounded out just right. The fries are hand cut also. Not frozen ones. Service was quick and polite. The side salad was a little skimpy with just one cucumber and lettuce. But would recommend this place for a good quick meal. read more

The Chuckwagon Restaurant In Adair is a very quaint place to eat between Omaha and Des Moines. They were voted Best Burger in Iowa for 2019. We would agree with that as the Cowboy burger and the Chuckwagon we had were extremely juicy and the homemade fries are fantastic. Service was fast and friendly and the prices very reasonable. We didn't get dessert but everything was homemade. Definitely recommend stopping there if you get the chance. read more

I was going to give this place a perfect 5 stars but because of Salli I didn't. I broke down Saturday night and have eaten here three times in two days. The ladies on Sunday were so lovely I even purchased a 17 dollar candle. I love the atmosphere and the food is so good. The coffee is amazing and the burgers are the best. I had two of them. I checked out of my room on Monday and went one last time to try their breakfast. Unfortunately I got Salli as my server. I could tell right away she wasn't a friendly person because I study body language courses and have understanding of what a positive mental attitude looks like as Napoleon Hill taught. I asked her if the scrambled eggs were wet and she said yes so I proceeded to order them with my breakfast meal. She came and asked me how everything was and before I could even tell her she was walking away She is not very aware and very much needs to practice mindfulness I told her the eggs were dry but if they give me one extra egg over easy to drench in my hash browns that I would be satisfied. She brought me my check and I told her I needed more coffee. I noticed that I was charged 1.79 for one egg. I messed up the merchant copy doing calculations so I asked her if the customer copy would be acceptable or do they need to reprint it. She asked why? I told her that she charged me for the extra egg so I calculated it out from the final which was still more than the bill but it meant a lesser tip for her She then aggressively shook her head and told me I asked for the egg so I had to pay for it. She asked me what place would you go to that wouldn't do that.. (paraphrasing). I said I'm from NJ and we have a higher population so I've eaten at many places and this is the first time this was an issue. She then said in her exact words at 12:47 PM, "that explains a lot right there" in a very demeaning tone. Anyone who has studied speech realizes that words are only around 10% or less, body language is 50% and tone is approximately 40%. I recommend Salli to read the Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle and How to Win Friends and Influence People a timeless classic by Dale Carnegie. She is a rude person and has no business being in the service industry. I heard her and was so embarrassed at my table as she continued to berate me to the others at the cooks station shaking her head and rolling her eyes as she recounted the story and making herself out to be a martyr. What an absolute disgrace. I'm embarrassed for the Owners of such a marvelous establishment to have such a negative and nasty server working for them. read more

Stopped here for breakfast while I was on a long road trip. Friendly server greeted us at the door and got out drinks fast. Informed us that we can order anything off the menu all day long. Lot's of good choices, but I was there for breakfast, so I ordered the meat lover's omelette.Definitely lived up to its name and was packed with meat (sausage, bacon, and ham). It was delicious and a very fair price, especially compared to similar places I've been. The restaurant itself was clean and it had a quiet atmosphere. Our family stopped on our way through Iowa. We were pleasantly surprised by this place. Service was great and the food was wonderful. We like to stop in Adair because it is a quiet, small town and very easy off and on the interstate. Chuck wagon is a nice change from fast food, and the fast food environment.
