a sign for chubby's ice cream

When it's 96 in the shade, it is okay to give yourself permission to cool down and chill out with some quality ice cream. Finding myself in the northern wilds of Bucks County on a visit to Ockanickon Boy Scout Reservation on an unforgiving day under the broiling sun, I wove my way down twisting two lanes into the oasis town of Plumsteadville. The blacktop mirage rippled its shimmer view, making the buildings appear to float. I spied the Plumsteadville Inn, and right next to it, Chubby's. Normally, I don't like ice cream before 5, and prefer not to eat it alone. But, this was an exception. I needed to lower my body temp before I started to act on my hallucinations. I walked in, and the AC hit me hard. Two angels came to my aid, offering to provide me with cool scoops of any flavor I could imagine. Because it was my first time in heaven they handled me a Golden Ruler as a gift (see photo). They said it would help me stay "measured." It was up to me to design the proper elixir to counteract the heat. Intuition led me to Salted Caramel and Black Cherry. It was lovingly served me in a styro cup, for under $5. The angelic smiles as I tossed the change into their prayer jar will not be forgotten. By the time I walked the short distance to my car the ice cream was already melting. I tasted both before I would be required to drink from the cup. Sheer excellence. Cool, creamy, sweet, salty, chunky, chewy - Ambrosia of the Gods. What else do angels serve on a sweltering day? ArcAngel Chubby does not make his own ice cream. It is Nelson's Ice Cream, made in Royersford, Pa. It may not be the bestest ice cream I have ever tasted, but on a day like today when shoes stick to pavement, it came straight from Valhalla.

Terrific ice cream and service. They just start making home made water ice and that is yummy too.

Soft serve is consistently broken. They have IOUs but I would appreciate a sign saying minimum credit card purchase $10 more.

You can even purchase one of those metal milk jar carriers to transport the milk home. They sell by the half gallon and for a family of four, I go through 4 jars a week or so. Prices are reasonable and they sell ice cream from a Longacres ice cream shop that has been in business since the 1930s in Barton, PA. When you pull up you see the cows that provided you with the delicious milk! I drive about 20min just for the milk. Won't purchase from anywhere else now that I can taste the difference. This family's dairy farm is one of the nostalgic reasons my family settled in this area (just one of many reasons). I mean, where else can you greet the cows that produce the fresh milk you are about to buy in old fashioned glass bottles? That's right! We buy 4 or 6 at a time and carry them in hard wire baskets, just like in the 1950's! And for about the same price you're paying at the grocery store for milk that's been sitting on a store shelf for who knows how long. In summer, they feature locally grown produce. In autumn they sell local apple cider that's unbelievable! And the holiday egg nog is to die for!! If you're driving to New Hope from Philly or just looking for something fun to do on a Saturday, it's a great trip! The dairy has a dedicated local following, my family included. It's cash or check only but they do have an ATM. Just remember, the Dairy closes on Sunday (like the Bible says, rest on the 7th day).

Their sundaes have varied and interesting ingredients such as thin mints, peanut butter cups, fruit and even devil dogs. Their flavors are the standard Hershey's flavors. One of the best is brown butter bourbon truffle. Holy COW is that flavor good. You don't even need anything else added to it. There are many other unique and delectable flavors such as peanut butter pretzel, chocolate moose tracks, midnight caramel river, or even playdough! The owner is often present and will ring you up himself. Ive found him to be a laid back and very nice person. We are regulars and he always makes sure we get our cards punched to get our discounts. The atmosphere is quaint - an old one roomschoolhouse - and the seating is all outdoors which is very nice in the spring summer and fall. There's picnic benches and lights strung up.
