It's street parking which isn't always close, but we don't mind as it gives the dog an opportunity to go to the bathroom outside the park.

The all-caps facade sign is obstructed by a bushy tree, but the storefront's vibrantly doodled soft-serve mural is visible at street level. A custom neon sign pops against the black subway tile sign behind the counter. Eighties rock and intense AC blast around the space. My fiancee and I visited for a post-dinner treat and shared a soft-serve bowl. The service was helpful, and we were able to sample before committing. Most flavors were vegan, but I wouldn't have guessed it by taste alone (though the texture was a tad icy). I loved the toasty Black Sesame, while my fiancee preferred the full-bodied Roasted Strawberry. Honeycomb toffee topping provided a pleasantly crunchy texture. Meanwhile, the Ube was subtle, while the Corn Almond was nearly flavorless (fortunately, I sampled both before deciding). We returned to try a slice of the Salted Caramel Pumpkin Softserve Pie. Broadly, the pie (already pre-sliced and placed in a plastic box) felt eyebrow-raisingly thick and held together well. However, the whipped toppings felt discordantly softer than the overly frozen, slightly icy "soft" serve. My fiancee and I agreed that we actually wish there was less soft-serve in the pie. The service is efficient, and the prices are at the premium end. Both the $7.50 Regular Cup and the $12 slice of pie felt like reasonable sizes for sharing. The fun soft serve flavors are worth a dedicated visit, but the overpriced pie underdelivered.

Beyond the out-the-door queue, Modu also boasts plenty of positive press, including features in Eater and the Los Angeles Times. You can't see the recessed storefront at the far end of York until you're standing right out front. Enter into a minimalist, industrial-chic space. Sunlight floods through the wide clerestory windows. The off-white limewashed walls are left undecorated, and the cracked cement floors are tastefully polished. A heavy-duty communal table dominates the middle of the room. Along both walls, light wood tables and stools are pressed up against the square-tiled half-booths. At the coffee bar in the back, pastries are tastefully displayed on matte black stoneware. The roar of chatter overwhelms the low hum of background instrumental. I've visited twice -- once on a serene early weekend morning, and again on a late weekend morning around noon with the line stretching to the door. Across the pastry selection, my fiancee's top pick was the Perilla Lime Tart. A crisp, candied perilla leaf was delicately perched atop the subdued tart, culminating in a dynamic array of textures and flavors. My favorite treat was the Black Sesame Mochi Cake Bar. The rich, smoky sesame felt warm and comforting within the chewy pastry. The Black Sesame Dark Chocolate Cookie was no slouch, either; I loved the mix of sweet and salty, but the tips of the cookie ran too cakey for my preference. The only dud was the Miso Honey Cinnamon Roll. The cinnamon and honey were unevenly distributed across the roll; some bites were heavily seasoned and wonderfully syrupy, while others were one-dimensionally airy. To drink, the signature Modu Latte featured a cloud-like cream top with a dash of cinnamon, feeling festive in flavor. But the Yuja Passionfruit Spritz was a worthy caffeine-free alternative; this refreshing mocktail prominently paired yuzu juice with seed-in passionfruit pulp. The service was friendly and efficient, and each item ranges from $5-10. Modu was designed with aesthetics in mind, above either comfort or practicality -- don't expect air-conditioning, comfortable seating, or readily accessible charging outlets. On a related note, the clamor in Modu will make it challenging to hear your own thoughts, much less do work or enjoy a pleasant conversation. The premium prices are generally commensurate with these top-tier treats; only the cinnamon roll was a true miss (I saw a few half-eaten ones in the plate return bin). I'd definitely pay Modu a repeat visit if I'm already in the neighborhood -- most likely to take my pastries to-go.

The people who work here are cool + nice, including the owner who we have met on a number of occasions. The one time I made the mistake of ordering my youngest child "Mexican chocolate" instead of regular chocolate, and she began crying because she didn't want the cinnamon, the sweet woman behind the counter replaced her cup of ice cream free of charge. My partner and I visited on a weekend evening, and Scoops boasted a steady stream of customers. We sampled a handful of flavors before settling on our top two. My partner's favorite was the signature Brown Bread. The milkshake-like texture melted smoothly on the palate, while the Grapenuts maintained an addictive crunch. The cupcakes are moist and juicy, which is something I look for in my cupcakes. It stays together in a concerted effort to give you the best texture, unlike some cupcakes out there that the second you use your fingers to take a piece apart it breaks down a stack of Jenga blocks. All (Oreo, Carrot, Vanilla and Red Velvet) cupcakes were deliciously semi-sweet, yep! The cupcakes were not over powering in sugar that it actually doesn't make you crave and want to gulp a galloon of water. The sweetness is subtle. And the frosting?! I have no idea what and how this business makes their frosting but if I was a kid in the kitchen you'd probably find me in the corner with a bowl stuffing my face of it. The frosting is delicious. The texture is almost that of whipped cream cheese (which it probably is) but slightly loose (if this makes sense). The important point: it doesn't get hard. I left a cupcake on my desk at work for probably a few hours and the frosting did not go stale. Anyhow, I recommend Little D's. The service fantastic and the owner is absolutely all about fantastic customer service. Side note: I didn't realize how long it's been since I reviewed. Boy am I rusty.
